Frankie Appreciation Thread

Frankie is a controversial subject due to his upcoming offseason train-robbery, but we all have to respect what he has accomplished in an Angels uniform and the elite company to which he has gained membership.

1. Bobby Thigpen..........57 1990
2. Eric Gagne ................55 2003
    John Smoltz ..............55 2002
4. Trevor Hoffman ........53 1998
     Randy Myers ...........53 1993
     Mariano Rivera ........53 2004
7. Eric Gagne   ..............52 2002
8. Rod Beck      ..............51 1998
    Dennis Eckersley .....51 1992
10. Mariano Rivera .......50 2001
11. Francisco Cordero ..49 2004
12. Rod Beck ..................48 1993
      Dennis Eckersley  ....48 1990
      Jeff Shaw ...................48 1998
     Francisco Rodriguez ..48 2008

His 48 Saves are an Angels single-season best. Let this be the Frankie Tribute Thread. From his amazing 2002 post-season contributions to his seamless uptake of the torch from the great Troy Percival, Francisco Rodriguez is an all-time Angels great, and he proved it once again in setting the record under immense pressure last night.

Frankie

Just get the money out of your head. Stay an Angel— please!

This is the quote I always think of, because at the time it was posted, he was giving me ulcers.

“It is like family, we tend to focus on what is wrong and never really appreciate what is good with someone who we are around all the time and close to. We’re doing that to Frankie and we’re going to be sorry when he is gone, then we’ll appreciate him.”

Whatever dude.

I'm just glad

that I got to see Frankie pitch in person when Amy and I were over in June – the previous trip I made to SoCal I didn’t get to see him pitch as neither of the games I saw were save situations. Even though we as fans and the batter know it’s coming, that slider/curve is still a wicked pitch and seeing opposition batters made fools of in person was fantastic!

i get soo jacked up

when Frankie does his celebration on the mound! the way i see it is, if Man-Ram can sit and watch his HR’s go over the wall before making the trot than Frankie can point to the sky, scream, do a jigg, run around like he just scored a goal, etc. the man pitches in pressure situations and when you come out on top you tend to celebrate a bit!

its going to be a sad day when/if Frankie leaves.

heres to breaking the all time record and staying an HALO for life! CHEERS!!!!!

There is an "Angel in the outfield" and his name is GA! ps. he is lazy but not a bum GO HALOS!

arrrr....must...struggle...to...keep...this...brief....!!

Ironically, I am probably NOT Frankie’s biggest fan, nor is he my #1 Halo [Erstad, followed by Ryan, followed by Knoop (don’t ask)]. Even on this current squad I pull for Izzy and Hunter more than Frankie.

But it is clear to me that with the Halos having one of the strongest bullpens in baseball this decade, we have all gotten spoiled. And I can clearly recall saying the same things about Percy to my youngest son, that folks around here say about Frankie’s performances. Our memories are very selective and, over time, our frustrations towards Frankie have slowly ramped up. This year, with the the pending free agency as the tipping point, they have turned into outright animosity. IMO, that is unworthy of us. These are why I started speaking up in his defense. Of course, I am kind of shocked that I have to actually had to defend Frankie around here.

I mean, seriously, over the past 4 years how many other active roster Halos have been at or near the very top of all major league baseball in his role on the team, every year?

Thank You Frankie!

Thank you for anchoring our solid bullpen and being one of the best relievers in the game. Also, please don’t take anything else I write about your future on other threads as insults, they’re not meant to be that. You’re awesome.

Underappreciated indeed...

I do not believe some will agree until they hear this next year;
“Now coming in to pitch for the (Seatte Mariners/Texas Rangers), number 57, Francisco Rodriguez”.
Yeesch. Another image to get out of my head.

I appreciate Frankie for the way he infuriates fans of opposing teams.

His record number of saves has translated to when Frankie shows up to pitch, it is usually over for your team to have any chance of coming back and winning a close game. They hate it when that happens. It angers them that Frankie’s violent delivery is so accurate. When Frankie throws out the final batter and points high in to the air, they take it to mean “I am Number 1” or “Up yours!” to their defeated faces. The best thing really is when Frankie gets the one pitch and one out saves that these fans think he does’nt deserve that beat them. I love it when they cry, “cheap save.”

Frankie has done the most to make the Angels one of the most hated and feared teams
by all the other fans of teams we play which you know are just other words for respect.

by 44FAN on Aug 21, 2008 1:40 PM PDT   0 recs

ABSOLUTELY agree

The Angels, as a team, beat you. Frankie stomps you. It is awesome to be on the winning side of the stomp.

Congrats on new Angels record

Keep up the great work.

i appreciate frankie for what he does....

while i have arguments against resigning him, that does not mean that he isn’t great at his job. nor does it mean i wouldn’t want to see him in an angel uniform for the rest of the career, just not at the expense of the rest of the club…….

all that aside, thank you, krod, for everything you have done over the years. this team wouldn’t have been the same without you and i will always be a fan of yours, no matter who you play for (if not the angels, hopefully someone in the national league…).

For the first time in each of our lives, Frankie took something from us

Our World Championship virginity. Cry all you want about how closers are overrated and substitutable. In October of a year called 2002, Frankie made the impossible real. Look at the stats and watch the video. It’s irrefutable. Without Frankie, Spiezio may as well have GIDPed because there wouldn’t have been a Game 6 to play.

If GA wasn't so lazy the Halos woulda won the 2008 WS by now.

by melvintoast on Aug 21, 2008 6:19 PM PDT   0 recs

Your going to credit one person for the 2002 WS win?

Be serious that was won by the team and the effort of all those that played. F-Rod played in just 5 regular season games (did well). Point is what about those that played all season? F-Rod doesn’t deserve the heap of credit for 2002 your shoveling.

F-Rod was outstanding in game 2! Only pitcher not to give up any runs out of the 5 used that night. He picked up the win and that evened the series at a game a piece. Big outing right there!

If you really want to break down the Series F-Rod was the loser in game 4. After giving up a lead off single to Snow and after uncorking what was ruled a pass ball that the gold glove winner of 2002 could not stop. F-Rod then gave it up a hit to D.Bell and the Angles lost 4-3.

In Game 6 F-Rod entered the game (5th inn) with the Angels behind 2-0 and Lofton on 2nd. Lofton would advance to 3rd on FC and score on a F-Rod wild pitch. The 6th inn was a little easier for him after he gave up the BOMB to Bonds and a hit to Snow. The 7th inn he would give up a hit to Lofton who would then steal 2nd (F-Rod did not hold runners even then). Kent would drive Lofton home giving the Giants a 5-0 lead. Reminding you that when F-Rod entered the score was 2-0. Spiezio’s 3 run BOMB just got it back to what it was before F-Rod game into the game ………down by 2.

I will not deny that F-Rod has done some good things for this organization and helped win games, but not one person is responsible for a win. They are just a contributor to a team effort within a team goal. Once those things are pushed to the back and it becomes about personal goals and individual accomplishments then the team concept is lost. F-Rod has not handled his pending FA well in my opinion. If he walks then he walks. We watched Wally Joyner do it (I did) and for us fans then it was hard but the Angels move on.

He may hold the Angel record...

…but he isn’t the greatest Angel reliever. Percy is!

So long Frankie…have a nice greed

i bet you became a halo fan in 1994...

not that that is bad, i’m just taking a wild guess.

on another cynical note...

its not like krod’s single season save record is like the pitching equivalent of the single season hits record. closers haven’t been around for all that long (in baseball time). i’m not trying to be that guy, but just stating the facts. it would be like breaking the home run record in 1910. i plea devil’s advocate.

p.s. i still love krod and his greatness at the important position he plays in the modern game of baseball.

I would also like to state

that I don’t hate Frankie. I do appreciate what he has done for us. I am just mad as hell at the way he has handled this situation. Telling everyone that he is definetly leaving at the end of the season was no way to make fans like him

I was under the impression that what he was saying

was that he was definitely going into the FA waters. not that he was definitely leaving the Halos. If the Halos pony up the market rate, he would remain here. Most of the resulting animosity here is that “market rate” for Frankie is not what most people here want to spend, and THAT equates to Frankie’s departure.

The logic of that, then, becomes “take a pay cut so that I can love you, otherwise I will hate you for leaving me in pursuit of what you are truly worth.”

Frankie can't win

If K-Rod and his agent get less than what they ask for but actually resigns with the Angels, I bet some Angels’ fans will be making one or more of these statements:

“Damnit, couldn’t they have traded for Joe Nathan, Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon, Trevor Hoffman and/or Troy Percival? We wanted this guy off our backs and now they’ve locked him up for the next four years. Don’t break a leg K-Rod, Don’t break a leg…”

“Good thing the Angels played hardball with this little man from his third world country demanding the world.”

“He’d better not step on a damn mound in a Venezuelan league exhibition game. Do you they have that written in his contract now?”

“Closers can be found on trees and he still isn’t worth $13 million a year [what the team might be giving him for the first two years of a four year deal as part of an escalating contract]. Anyone take a wager when he’ll break down with his violent delivery.”

“He’d better tone down that after the game BS. Does it have it in contract, when and where he can act like a Rally Monkey after he saves a game?”

by BBFan1 on Aug 22, 2008 11:03 PM PDT   0 recs

My thoughts on this are very simple

I don’t want to see him on another American League team next year.

Frankie vs. Monkey

Which will win-out more often?

Frankie is a rare bloom. A dangerous weapon. I would like to see him in the Angels bullpen… or nowhere at all.
