Anyone here with a Slingbox and ability to share the feed ?

I’m stuck in a hotel in Westlake Village without FSN W, and MLB.TV won’t show me the game either.

Another one of those games

where the Angels keep erasing themselves on the basepaths.

There is a reason Figgins has as few stolen bases as he has this year, and it’s not just that he’s aging.

The good news is the Angels get to lead off with Teix.

Witty .sig goes here.

I know... it sounds terrible

But it is the truth.

Weaver looked brilliant exactly 3 times this year; two of those outings were in spring training. They say Garland is the definition of mediocre – if that’s the case, than Jered is worse than mediocre.

We're playing a division rival

we’re struggling lately. Weaver is on the mound.

So what do we do?

Play Quinlan and GMJ, and get 5 hits, but no runs in 3 innings.

Baseball sucks.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 8:09 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's what I said

Scioscia felt confident because:

1- with Weaver we always get TONS of run support (…)
2- with Weaver, and his ability to throw a no hitter, the opposition won’t score anyway
3- actually, he doesn’t feel confident at all

He has good plate discipline too.

Would have been useful against a guy like Ziegler. Figgy has occasionally dropped a bunt basehit, but the guy can’t sac-bunt to save his life. Willits is well above average in range as far as left and right field go.

Point being, he has skills that make him useful to this team off the bench, playoff team or not. Point stands. Calling him “shitty” or saying that he “sucks” are failed opinions. He remains a useful player, though not a starter.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 25, 2008 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Failed opinion?

Sucks is an extremely relative term, and in this context used primarily as a joke. There are any number of other people I’d rather have on the roster than him, and his skill-set is so limited to relatively few situations that I’d much rather have someone that can come in and contribute in many more situations in a given game…maybe the type of player who contributes to the point that we don’t find ourselves in the need of a pinch-hit sac bunt.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Except that such players are limited in number and as Willits is both inexpensive

and useful in certain situations, he remains a good choice for our bench. I’m not sure who the any number of people you’d rather have are, but there are at least two guys on our bench that Willits out-classes in terms of usefullness rignt now.

Sucks is relative based on context. “He sucks at baseball” doesn’t seem to leave much context up for debate.

If it was meant as a joke, so be it. Given your previous statements on Willits though, it seemed like something more akin to being serious.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 25, 2008 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is relative based on context

based on the context, I THOUGHT it was a very obvious joke. Look at the first post, and then my reply. “That’s why he hasn’t been activated yet”…“that and he sucks at baseball.”

On a 25 man roster, I’d rather have Wood, Evans, Morales, Bulger, and maybe Brown. We’re a team short of power, if anything. Not a team dying for a slap-hitting, decent-fielding scrappy-type.

If you’re saying that his best asset is that he can pinch-hit bunt (as I would NEVER start a player with his gross inability to hit), then I say pass. You get 25 spots (I would certainly use him, as long as he’s on the team, on the 40 man roster however), and I can’t find a reason to waste it on a guy who is going to be used to lay down a bunt every 3rd or 4th day. As far as I’ve seen, defensive metrics have him as nothing more than slightly above average at his best. But I haven’t seen all the numbers for that either. Saying he’s a better fielder than Matthews means less than nothing to me.

He’s a guy we were best off trading at peak value last year, before he was exposed this year. And in regards to him “sucking” at baseball again? No, he’s in the majors…of course he doesn’t suck. But his skill set within the professional game is EXTREMELY limited.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why Evans?

What is Evans going to provide that Wood or Morales cannot? Willits offers superior speed and plate patience. With Izturis out for the year, the number of controlled hitters we possess is extremely limited, and Evans doesn’t have it. Evans also lacks any real experience playing in major league games or coming off the bench in major league games, where as Willits does not.

Willits doesn’t really have a best asset, but I would say his combination of speed, defense, plate patience and bunting ability gives him a skillset that makes him useful to this ball club, well over yet another right-handed power-hitter with only minor league experience and a tendency to strike out, which comprise three of the four guys you listed.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 25, 2008 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

“What is Evans going to provide that Wood or Morales cannot?”

The ability to play the OF, for one.

And if we’re talking hitters with a knack for strikeouts…well, Willits is right there with the best of ’em.

Frankly, with a 15+ game lead in our division and more than a month to play, I can think of NOTHING better to do than to give a chance to those right-handed power hitters with no major league experience. Short of being 15 games OUT of the race right now, there are few better opportunities to give guys like them that much-needed experience. If any one of them proves he can produce right now, they are likely instantly better than Willits.

Also, I listed 5 guys. And this thread takes forever to load, so if we’re just going to continue to severely disagree, I wouldn’t object to you conceding that I am oh-so-totally-right about this, and therefore just way-too-awesome to debate with.

<3

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Except Willits has this ability to get on base, too

Which Evans does not. Oh, and steal bases and stuff.

Also, I can think of at least ONE thing I’d rather do than get the kids playing time, namely win HF advantage throughout the playoffs. We can’t do both, and what would be the point? Only one or two bench guys is likely to get PH in a clutch situation in the playoffs, and right now I think Morales is that guy. Having those other guys on the bench doesn’t accomplish much if we already know who we’re subbing in for the key hit.

Willits on the other hand is fast, and can play all three outfield positions. He can also lay down a bunt if Scioscia insists on it. He can take a key walk. With someone like Morales already on your bench, Willits adds more to the table than another righty bat.

And you did list 5 guys, but Speier is another guy that Willits beats right now in terms of playoff usefulness. I just prefer to keep the bench and the bullpen separate.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 26, 2008 6:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's above-average at a few fundamentals

doesn’t make him fit to be on a division winning, world series contending roster. His spot is better taken by a number of minor league guys that I’d rather have.

But saying he sucks at baseball is hyperbole used to make a simple point quickly. You know this.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like who?

There’s no one in our minor league system I’d rather have as a backup outfielder/pinch runner right now. Mike is going to bunt in certain situation no matter WHAT you or I might prefer and we both know it. That being the case, I’d rather we at least possess someone who is good at it. There are also situations, like tonight, where having someone patient at the plate over a guy like Aybar is desirable.

There are very few backup outfielders I’d take over Willits for our bench ATM. As a regular, he’d likely be sub-par, though I really wonder if it’s so very unlikely that he could match Figgins’ production this season in regular playing time. But as a bench guy, he has great utility power, and has demonstrated an ability to make key plays off the bench all season long.

Hyperbole has it’s uses and I’ll point out that I didn’t object in any strenuous way until phrases like dogshit started being thrown around.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 25, 2008 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know what Scioscia likes to do. And I know he likes to bunt. That’s part of my objection though…his style is dictating that we keep an otherwise useless individual on our bench for the mere purpose of dropping down the occasional bunt, which in turn forces the manager to pull another guy from the game.

It further creates the problem that, once he comes in for that rare bunt, unless you want to deal with a guy with a 56 OPS+ in the lineup, you have to carry yet ANOTHER bench player to take his spot after he’s thrown down that bunt. Which means, effectively, he replaces two bench spots to equal one complete player.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

56 OPS+ is SSS.

And despite his poor batting average his OBP is STILL better than 6/9ths of our current starting lineup. Willits hasn’t been any more “exposed” than Rivera was before he was given regular starts. His stats last year and career minor league stats remain way more relevant to his ability to produce than 65 ABs this season.

Alex was hitting for our team, if you remember correctly.

He may not have gotten much W.S. time, but he produced for us in the regular season when given chances.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So?

When push came to shove, Ochoa’s only job on the WS team was spelling Tim Salmon late in ballgames. Willits can do that AND perform Chone Figgins’ 2002 job of Pinch running, so we get two for the price of one.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 25, 2008 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the thing

If Willits had to be relied on to spell people late in ball games, I don’t see him somehow replicating Ochoa’s numbers doing so, which makes him less useful.

And again, proving to me that we may have had undeserving players on the roster in the past isn’t going to convince me to keep doing it going forward. And, coming from my personal perspective that Willits is just that, it’s not the best line of reasoning.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Somehow repicate Ochoa's numbers?

0 for 5 with 3 Ks in the 2002 playoffs. I feel confident that Willits could at least match that kind of production.

And my point is that there no such thing as “undeserving players” on a team that wins the World Championship. Any guy on that team will inevitably have one or two key plays at some point in the season that you. The question, especially come playoff time, is simply a matter of utility, and Willits has a skillset that thanks to the loss of Izturis, we no longer possess in great quantities and have none of coming off the bench.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 26, 2008 6:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I meant regular season numbers for Ochoa

And OF COURSE there are undeserving guys on a championship roster. Just because you’re there doesn’t mean you’re inevitably going to do shit. It just means you got added, and by the time it was realized that you were worthless, it was too late to swap you out.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 26, 2008 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Except that Willits remains non-worthless

given that his skillset is A) useful and B) not present in some other player we currently possess.

Also, what makes Wood, S-Rod, Morales etc more worthy of playing time in the near future than Willits? It’s not as if any of them have outperformed him in the playing time they’ve received this year.
