I don't follow team news like I used to

Is Vlad hurt? Why are they not starting him this series? Why is Q starting?

GMJ and Q are the two worst position players on the team….

vlad's tired

GA’s knees are sore
Morales got sent down for bulger
Willits didn’t get brought back up because of bulger

GMJ needs to tweak his knee and end his season early

While we are waiting for something to happen....

Does anyone know when (if ever) the league stats get combined for guys like Tex and Manny who are traded mid-season?

For ex: if a guy ends up with the most RBIs combined, is he recognized as ANY league leader end of season??

No, they don't combine stats.

In fact, an odd situation happened in 1990. Willie McGee was leading the NL in BA with a .335 average when he was traded to the A’s in August. He had enough ABs to qualify for the NL title, so his avg. was essentially “frozen”. Including his A’s stats, McGee hit .324 and actually trailed Dodger Eddie Murray and his .330 average. But because stats aren’t combined, McGee won the NL batting title.

I know, I just felt like he needed some help.

At this point, I feel like Mathis has had his shot. He had sole control of the catching position for a month and didn’t do anything with it. Let’s see if Naps can do something.

I am a big Naps supporter but I still like Mathis long-term

Naps I think could hit 25-30 homers if he played 110 games a year.

Mathis has had like 3 very solid months for a catcher but 2 months where he’s hit like a pitcher. Hopefully he’ll gain consistency, I mean this is really his first full time job catching. Of course I think we can both hope that Conger makes it a moot point ;)

He's better than average when healthy, and always has been.

He makes it look easy because he’s just that good. This year his ZR is .906. That’s better than any regular LF in baseball save Carl Crawford right now.

He doesn’t slide because as Ichiro once put it, sliding doesn’t actually help most of the time. Just like sliding into first, it only slows you down. It looks flashy but it’s not really necessary. Garret tends to make smart plays and he has good reads off the bat.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 26, 2008 8:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You know you need to save your ZR for someone that gives a crud

He’s a solid avg OF that has never been counted on for defense!

Sliding into a catch does help. Diving does as well. When has he ever done that? LF has forever been the least defensive OF position on the field if not the least defensive position on all the field. Tell your snot to someone that hasn’t played at a higher level or spent time at Instructional league watching coaches teach OF play

You dont understand Ichiro and when have you ever talked baseball with Scioscia?

You just don’t get it. Understand the lingo before you argue! I never said GA was not a player or a good player. Just know that he isn’t this great OF you speak of. As I said he is a solid avg and there is nothing wrong with that.

My assistant scouting director did not even turn GA when he was an area scout and GA was at LA Kennedy. I told him he was wrong and that he should turn him in. He said his lazy approach and lack of pop would not be suited for a corner OF position. We argued then and I still ask him today if he was wrong. I liked him then and I still do now. Just know enough to say he isn’t a better then avg OF

Willie Mays Aikens is FREeeeeeeee

by Angel Aviator on Aug 26, 2008 8:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"Understand" Ichiro?

What do I need to understand? He’s said it. I’ll find the quote if you want me to. Ichiro gets accused of being “lazy” by some in the Seattle media for not diving, and it’s just as bogus for him as it is for GA.

I never called GA “great.” I said he was “good” and “above-average” and he is. He’s smart, his arm is strong and accurate when he wants it to be (and when he’s healthy), and he gets good reads off the bat. He rarely makes errors not because of our scorer but because he consciously avoids mistakes.

There’s a reason GA played center when Edmonds went down with injuries, and why GA was the original person Scioscia slotted into center in 2004 when our outfield was GA, Guillen, Vlad.

Scioscia talks about GA’s defense in interviews pretty regularly, and by all accounts, has the same opinion of him that I do.

Also, just FYI, Joe Maddon used to use ZR and computer fielding charts all the time back when he was bench coach. I feel confident that he probably still uses them in TB as manager.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 26, 2008 8:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ZR is a car isn't it?

So Ichiro is using that as a defense for his lack of effort out on D as well? Nice, so he did it, so I decided I would as well. Great! Strong rebuttal…

I would hope the manager would stick up for his players no matter what. Thats his job to deflect negative so the players can play. The things you mention about GA are the reasons I said he is solid avg. You seemed to have a problem with the lingo (solid avg=good).

The scouting reports (advance scouting) that I use to put together had nothing to do with ZR and everything to do with what type of pitch and pitcher and location = the result. They are not computer fielding charts! Those are defensive alignment charts showing tendencies. Tell the coaches when they run or hit-n-run, who they will do those action plays with what counts they run / attempt SB’s. Nothing to do with the fielding. I know I have spent many hours of my life putting them together.

Willie Mays Aikens is FREeeeeeeee

by Angel Aviator on Aug 26, 2008 8:57 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know what scouting reports are.

And I know that Joe Maddon was on his laptop in the dugout every night. He used batted ball distribution + ZR (Zone Rating) to come up with defensive alignments.

If solid avg = good, then why did you disagree with me when I said he was a good left fielder? It’s right up there a few posts back.

No, GA has so few errors because he doesn’t make mistakes

and is a good left fielder.
A good left fielder or a good hitting left fielder?

he’s avg defensive OF nothing overly special on D just solid avg D guy ……….like to see him slide/dive for a few balls……….not now he would break

And again- I’m going to take the guy who is renowned as one of the best defensive OFs in the game over you on this. Just like with Jim Edmonds, diving is often making a play look harder than it actually was.

Zone Rating, BTW is nothing more than the percentage of potential plays in a player’s defensive zone that are converted into outs.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 26, 2008 9:10 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Your using the ZR for the way to play the OF as well now

and how to rate the OF ability? what one is it? Not so sure you know what a scouting report is or how many you have put together and presented to a manager.

Where does the info come from? Info is only as good as the info in! Info comes from those of us that watch a million games a year.

Stats Inc. tracks the version I use.

And provides it to people who pay money for it, one of whom is ESPN.

It’s also possible to get more advanced versions of it which tell you about avg. reaction speed, range to left and right, and any number of other things.

Joe Maddon would take this data and develop defensive schemes against opposing batters to achieve the best possible defensive coverage as well as determine which guys made sense to sub-in where and against who.

Willie Mays Aikens is FREeeeeeeee

by Angel Aviator on Aug 26, 2008 9:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No Maddon uses the computer as a tool.

Just as I do. I did not simply post his ZR and expect you to accept it. I also gave my observations of things GA does well, things Scioscia also points out as GA’s strong points, and supported my rebuttal of your criticism that he doesn’t dive with statements from a man who is widely considered one of the best at the position.

The opinions I put forward on this blog do not float on ethereal vapor to me from the stats page. I’ve been watching baseball since before I knew how to walk. My granddad was a big fan of the game, a “baseball guy”; he was pointing out defensive shifts, explaining pitch selection based on count to me when I was four. Being from Oklahoma and having no Major League team to root for, I chose the Angels at six years old because I figured I’d look a lot like Wally Joyner when I played in the big leagues. That was ’91.

We did not have cable. I followed my team through the box scores and the bi-lines, and if people think the Angels get no national press now, with ESPN and the internet, try to imagine following those 90s teams from 1500 miles away in the local paper. But I stuck with them through the strike, and the ’95 collapse, and in the meantime, I learned things. Having a Double-A team nearby, I got to watch guys like Pudge, Sammy Sosa, Rafiel Palmeiro, Rusty Greer, and Benji Gil develop. I started seeing patterns to the way their stats translated to the majors, the way their plate approaches and footwork changed as they became more experienced. I read interviews and listened to the announcers in the National Broadcasts (playoffs, All-Star game, etc.) as they talked about all of these things, and I matched my observations to what they said.

I continue to read and listen and learn and adapt my perception of the baseball world accordingly. ZR, and any stat, is simply one more piece of info that I add to and compare against the larger body of experience and observation of baseball. I never forget the human element, but I never simply dismiss the stats either.

I just don’t get why LA based hotels don’t even have FSN west. And the chain doesn’t matter either; I stayed in the Four Seasons – NO FSN WEST, I stayed in the Marriot or Renaissance – NO FSN WEST. Hyatt, Westin, you name it… Nobody has it.

But they do have DirecTV sports; they charge $9.99 per game. And I think that’s insane.

But your house is free

I dont’ have to pay $400 a night for the privilege of paying another $9.99. I hate hotels.

If GA wasn't so lazy the Halos woulda won the 2008 WS by now.

I do a lot of business in SoCal; sometimes in the SD area, other times in the Ventura area

Right now I’m in Westlake Village. I am not going to drive back and forth to Irvine every day; I’m not Scioscia. So I stay in a hotel, and have tried every somewhat decent hotel in this area but nobody has FSN West. I just don’t understand why that is. They have HBO and a lot of junk channels but not one of the most wanted ones.

When the rosters expand to 40

Angels should sign and add Usain Bolt as a pinch-runner. He’d score from 1st on a sac fly.

Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!

Signing in: Wow, that's a pretty good lead we have

And apparently GMJ is resembling Tex in OBP

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
