What to do with Matthews?
Alright... In today's LOSE thread, we've been having the discussion on what to do with Gary Matthews Jr. Many suggestions have come up, so I'll try to include all of them in the following poll.
We have a few options, as I see it, but the best one may be to just cut our losses and DFA him. This guy has been nothing but bad this year, and it looks like he'll only get worse from now on.
What do you all think?

ersty has been mostly a sub and spot starter for the astros but his presence in the clubhouse would be unmatched

Player to be named later
Erick Aybar or Maicer Izturis
Erstad and Matthews both clear waivers, with cash agreed, as long as the Astros try to put Kazuo Matsui through waivers too.
If the deal doesn’t go through, no biggie, Matthews DFA’ed, we keep Aybar. Other wise it’s a Matthews-Aybar/Izturis for Erstad-Matsui deal with Wood ready hopefully next year.

Too late
If we were going to do something like voiding his contract, it would have been when we found out about it before last season. Matthews could argue (accurately) that his contract was voided because he wasn’t playing well.

and i personally have no problem with that
IFF he is 100% healthy. and even then, he’s not a starter on this squad, at least not since we got hunter. so in that regard, we are stuck with a highly paid bench player.

depends on what you mean
true, it will be very difficult if not impossible to trade him, or to get a team to take on his contract. but we don’t have to keep have him on the 40 man roster. If I understand waiver rules correctly (and please forgive me if I have misunderstood them, but their complexity should allow some forgiveness) we can place him on waivers. If some team is crazy enough to claim him we could try to work something out, with the main goal of dumping his salary.
If no one claims him we can outright him to the minors. We can only make this move once in his career and would still be on the hook to pay the rest of his contract. However, he is no longer taking up a roster spot.
Another option is to present this plan to him and see if he is more willing to go on the 60 day DL
The way I see it. GMJ does not have much of a future on this team. If the plans are to trade him in the off season then why not clear the roster spot now. It can’t be a question of depth because Juan and Reggie give the team much better options.

if depth was THAT big of a concern
they could call up Evans or Pavkovich to take the bench slot..
clearly, the problem is salary and the fact that he’s a “veteran player”.
but i agree, they should give him two options: waivers or surgery. he picks and they do it.

Don't theen soo
If a player is out of options (or maybe after you sign a FA deal?), he can’t be sent to the minors without permission. They need to fix that in the next CBA.
Obviously 2008 is a lost cause for GMJ, but it’s only a month until September call-ups, so we can waste an empty roster spot for a month with our big lead.
In 2009 he starts fresh, I mean even I don’t think he is this bad. Then if he still sux, by about midyear he should accept a trade to the National Minor League since he will want playing time, I’m sure.

That's what being Designated for Assignement is
After all of a player’s option years are up they have to accept the Assignment to the minors, if they want to stay with the organization.
That’s why you don’t see many young guys or prospects being DFA’d when they don’t perform, they still have option years and are under team control.
That’s not going to change in the next CBA.

why does any potential solution to matthews problem seem like a lose-lose?
the suing for misrepresentation brings up an interesting legal quandary though and a dangerous legal precedent could be set. i dont really like where that path could lead, better to just close the door on the whole steroid era.

Rex has been making the rounds dissing GMJ lately.
So this must be old news to Garbage, himself. One would think that he would have used recent appearances to show some pride. If those performances were his version of pride, then FAIL.

What you just mentioned as "dissing",
I assign to Rex’s personality of telling the truth as he sees it, as an ex-player.
When Rex speaks off the cuff, I feel as if I am getting the conversation that would be going on between other players on the team, about whatever is going on at the time. I think Rex is the real deal, unlike what I all-too-often hear from his partner Phyz.

Not disagreeing, but if this were a one-off, and management did not agree with him,
they would have put a halt to it several days ago. Clearly they are not instructing him to knowck it off, and they are allowing him to continue his clubhouse chatter.
