Automatic PostGame Thread

Sunday PREGAME thread and GAME thread links.

HERE IS A BONUS POSTGAME PICK: Make your picks now thru midnight Pacific Time:

Name Three Players who get called up to the Angels when rosters expand. One poitn per correct pick - FOUR points if you get all THREE.

This contest is null and void if the Angels announce their picks before midnight tonight.
Resultsum4_medium

Blame of the Game: Jeff Mathis

Jeff was 0 for 3 and of our 6 LOB, 3 of them were left by him. He allowed a stolen base and did not adequately block a Wild Pitch 3rd strike that led to a run. No offense, no defense, somebody needs a rest.

BOTG=Mathis

His average fell to .198 and he had ab when it mattered. What is the point of working the count Jeff if you are going to swing at regardless of where the pitch is on 3-1? That pitch was 6 inches outside and high but Jeff popped up weakly to 1B on it.

That ump was pretty bad. There is no way that the pitch GMJ struck out looking on in the 9th and then the pitch Wood took for strike one can both be strikes. That plate was way to big.

Also co-BOTG for whoever let S-Rod hit in the 9th. We had Hunter and Vlad on the bench and I don’t know but I thought we were trying to win homefield advantage. If the Angels face the Rays in the ALCS then I think we are going to be really upset that S-Rod was given the chance to prove himself when he looked overmatched all game and Vlad and Torii were on the bench.

here's a question...

K-Mo was called up after the game to take Shane Loux’s place on the roster, as Loux is having surgery in his mouth.

Toward the bottom of this story

does that count as a part of the September call-ups or not?

BTW, we also released Alex Serrano.

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Aug 31, 2008 8:13 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

Man, that’s kind of odd. The Angels just about never unload pitching depth.

that's what i thought too

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Aug 31, 2008 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

K-MO DOES NOT COUNT

They sent someone down and the rosters had not yet expanded. The real reason they did this is so that they can use K-Mo in the playoffs if need be.

NEEDS A REST?

Mathis has barely played lately. However bad his D is these days, Napoli is still incrementally better there, and has found a way of getting balls out of the park.

Witty .sig goes here.

by scareduck on Aug 31, 2008 8:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i think they're being careful with Napoli because of the shoulder issue

Mathis started a throw-away game today. not that big of a deal.

i’d like to think that they’re resting Napoli now so they can play him all through October, but with Mike’s mancrush, you never know.

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Aug 31, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're probably right

Mathis really needs help. This is weird considering he was supposed to be the more defensively oriented of the two.

Witty .sig goes here.

i still think a trip to AAA would do him good

although it’s pointless now… maybe they should actually kill the platoon and sit him until next year.
you think that would knock some sense into him?

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Aug 31, 2008 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe

or it might destroy his confidence in his abilities to catch in the big leagues, a double edged sword that i want no part of swinging.

so instead, we let him stink to high heaven?

i’d rather take that chance than let the guy continue to suck the life out of the major league offense.

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Sep 1, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats a good point

but is it possible that he still has upside left? the guy has a cannon and a quickness behind the plate that when he’s on, is unbeatable. maybe it’s a man-crush like sosh has. could he be trade bait in the off season?

i think that's feasable

package up him and Aybar for somebody?
Wood can take over SS, with Izzy as a backup, since we’re so set in out Figg-ish ways.

Napoli takes over catcher, Wilson backs up, and we have Conger here in 2 years.

Francisco Rodriguez: 199 career saves. 3 career Panthers, 1/3 as awesome as GMJ.

Actually, now that I think about it.

The Angels probably don’t have to make any announcements until Tuesday, since htey have an off day on Monday. They can make the moves, and inform the league office, but they don’t have to go out of their way and issue midnight press releases or anything.

Francisco Rodriguez: 199 career saves. 4 career Panthers, almost 1/2 as awesome as GMJ.

I would like to appologize to everyone

I was in a game thread a couple of nights ago and I was talking about how I think Mathis is a better catcher than Napoli. I would like to retract that statement.

Write to the Angels front office. Get Tim Salmon's number 15 retired!

How is this going to apply? I'm assuming these are too early to count?

Since this story was up yesterday before this post game thread came up, should we assume that these picks aren’t considered to be part of the roster expansion post 9/1?

This is a little confusing...

When I go to the team page I don’t see these call ups having taken place on Saturday as was reported.

Confusing at least for me…

You will see the transactions

here. But, yes, you will notice that the Angels are missing from that list.

This is because they had an off-day today, so the release of their information to the media did not have to happen last night. Since they play tomorrow, the news should show up in the next 12 hours.

by Hapyorange on Sep 2, 2008 6:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I don't make the rules around here, so I am not the one to answer this.

I was out all that evening and did not even know about this free contest until I got back online after the posted deadline, so I would love for late posts to count. They were still 36 hours prior to public knowledge.

But the rules for this contest were aligned with league timelines, and rules is rules…

Francisco Rodriguez: 199 career saves. 4 career Panthers, almost 1/2 as awesome as GMJ.
