Baseball Tonight is doing a series on Franchise Players
You can vote on ESPN. com by clicking here.
They are going team-by-team alphabetically - too bad they list the Angels in the L.A. spot.
The Angels choices are:
Garrett Anderson (1994-present)
Brian Downing (1978-1990)
Darin Erstad (1996-2006):
Chuck Finley (1986-1999):
Troy Glaus (1998-2004):
Bobby Grich (1977-1986):
Troy Percival (1995-2004):
Nolan Ryan (1972-1979):
Tim Salmon (1992-2006):
Frank Tanana (1973-1980)
I think Baylor and possibly Carew could have been on this list.
The Angels results will be revealed on Aug. 17

The last time someone did one of these, that "Hometown Heroes" travesty,
Rod Carew got it.

Where's Vlad?
Or is there a certain length of service required?
I would go with Timmy regardless.
Light Up That Halo!
I wondered about Vlad too ...
But I think he’d need to be here more than 5 season to qualify as the greatest Angel – not just the greatest player to put on an Angels uni
"And the Anaheim Angels are the Champions of Baseball!"
This is literally retarded
Jim Fregosi was an original Angel, a six-time All-Star, the best major league shortstop between Ernie Banks and Robin Yount, received MVP votes in eight consecutive years, then got traded for franchise icon Nolan Ryan and various other players who were flipped for a series of other players including franchise icon Brian Downing … and along the way he managed the first-ever Angel team to win a Division Title.
So yeah, no reason to put him on this list.
And it's a crappy medium to pull this off
The HH Top 100 list is pretty comprehensive (except for, sorry, Mickey Rivers), but even then I think the voters got the top 10 right; you can argue about placement, but there’s no question that with the aforesaid exception, all the Angels’ greats made it on the list. Television is all about time constraints, and with these east coast biased idiots voting, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them put short-timer Reggie Jackson atop the list just because of the Mr. October thing. Not that he’s not a good player, but he’s about to fall off the Top 40 Angels list thanks to the Angels’ recent successes. You’ve got to rank him back of a number of players on the current roster, including Vlad, Garret Anderson, and yes, Tim Salmon.
Witty .sig goes here.

The only player in MLB HISTORY with at least one gold glove at more than one position: Darin Earstad

Not quite.
Only player in MLB history with a GG in both the outfield and infield.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Tough one....
they are not on the ballet, but for me it’s a toss up between Edgardo Alfonso, Steve Finley, and Pat Rapp.
Durn posting problems
Or for those not really paying attention from the late eighties through a good part of the nineties (and not alive to experience 1961-1984), who was Pat Rapp?
Light Up That Halo!
To wit-
Went 5-12 for us in 2001. Didn’t actually have all that horrible an ERA at 4.76.

Call me crazy...
but Chuck Finley is my favorite Halos pitcher of all time, followed by the other two lethal lefties langston and abbott, and then followed by another lefty jarrod washburn. I also think if some of those BBWAA writers sat down for a hot second and looked at the numbers, than blyleven and finley would both be in the hall of fame. That’s just me talkin’ though… can I get at least one fellow HH’er hallelujiah?
Chuck Finley...
Hall of the Very Good…
Not the HOF.
But, put him on a kick ass team for the length of his career – one that wins a couple division titles, an ALCS and gets to or wins the series it might be a different story.
He won a lot of games for some shitty Angel teams….
Jim Scully
Chuck Finley...
...was an awesome pitcher – my favourite Angel while I lived in Orange County. I wouldn’t put him in the hall of fame though.
Can’t believe Glaus is on this list and Fregosi isn’t. That’s bollocks.
I see red people
My picks
It was tough to narrow down the greats and I am sure I am missing some names:
Steve Sparks
Kent Bottenfield
Ramon Ortiz
Julio Ramirez
Jose Guillen
Nolan Ryan
I think the vote will go towards Nolan.
My vote goes for Bottenfield.
If you ignore all stats except for wins, he was a great pitcher the year before we got him.
Oh, and how come Steve Finley and Shea Hillenbrand didn’t make the list? Or GMJ? Please, please put GMJ on your list and I’ll change my vote. He’s the tops!
No Fregosi
Give me a break.
Although I would choose Salmon or GA.
Vlad coming up.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
BOBBY GRICH
"Life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end."
I am more interested in the quest to find Titletown.
Seattle I would like to thank you for sucking. It allows me to get back to my roots: Hating Fremont.
Kobe tell me how my ass tastes
not to split hairs, BUT...
Although the subject of the poll is franchise players, the question of the poll is “Who is the all-time greatest player in Angels history?” To me, these are two slightly different things. For example, Darin Erstad would rank highly on my list of franchise players (much like HH’s Greatest Angels list), but he would rank further down on my list of “greatest players”, which to me seems to value performance on the field over impact on a franchise. (This would be a perfect segue into my infamous PHIL ratings scale, but I’ll save that for another time.)
I only mention this because perhaps the Tim Salmon selection isn’t as obvious as it seems…GA, anybody???
Timmy >> Anderson
I really don’t think it’s close; Salmon gave the Angels eight seasons of .500+ SLG, five years of which he hit 30+ homers. Anderson had only four seasons with .500+ SLG. Moreover, Anderson never had a single season OBP over .400, but Timmy did that three times, and was at or above .380 eight times; Anderson, zero times. Anderson had only one season with 30 or more home runs; Salmon had four.
Don’t get me wrong, GA has been a valuable player, but Tim Salmon was much better because he was a far more disciplined and more consistently powerful hitter.
Witty .sig goes here.
Great, I contradicted myself
I was right the first time, Salmon had five seasons of 30+ HR.
Witty .sig goes here.
it's gotta be the Fish.
Every Angels jersey I ever buy will have the number 15 proudly displayed on it.
the reason vlad isnt included
is because he finished first in the expos voting, ahead of andre dawson and gary carter
