Vlad gets mention in Olympic Opener
NBC's Bob Costas is pulling off the most classic Ugly American schtik in Olympic history, narrating the Grand Entrance of each country. When the Dominican Republic made it's entrance, Big Papi and Angels RF Vladimir Guerrero were all Mister Encyclopedia could reference.

i'm surprised we were cheered as much as we were
the crowd actually seemed thrilled that we were there

For the Record, a vast majority of Chinese people "love" the US and Americans
Not to get all political here, but China and Chinese people in general, love the US. Same with many Asian countries as a whole. Historically of course, Nixon forced China to open up to the rest of the world. Of course, this would eventually lead China to an economic boom, where they make all the stuff we buy at Wal-mart/Target today. Thus, it caused the average Chinese Citizen to rise from borderline poverty to borderline middle-class. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the NBA is the US, as well as a large Chinese American population. And Hollywood/Disneyland/Microsoft, for that matter.
I love LAC.
i knew we were pretty cool with China/Asian countries
i was more talking about the rest of the crowd that was their… the “over political, over ridiculous” Western European countries

Ugly American?
Correct me if i’m wrong, but wasn’t the original intention of the term “Ugly American” suppose to describe those American’s that were viewed positively by the people in the country they resided in? And that the term has been misunderstood from what the author intended when he wrote the book.
What book?
If an intended meaning to a term changes over time to a new meaning there is no way to legislate it back.
I read the book, The Ugly American
And technically, you’re correct that the term “ugly American” was used by the book’s authors to illustrate a hands-on, grassroots diplomacy to “win hearts and minds” as opposed to the polished, plastic-smiled diplomacy of cocktail parties and handshakes employed by the Department of State (still prevalent in the Foreign Service today). For what it’s worth, it was a good read and hit home for me as I read it whilst in the Corps (that’s the Peace Corps) and being an ugly American myself.
However, the term has always been used more commonly to describe the bloated ignorance (and/or arrogance) of Americans in foreign lands, so the Rev is right in his assessment of Costas.

I generally like Bob Costas, I think he is interesting and intelligent
I thought he was at times, bored, conveyed that- and at times a bit inappropriate last night. I think norcaliangelsfan was right, he was snide.
Where right now the only thing shakier than Scot Shields is our defense...
