Last Chance for "Anaheim Angels"
On Thursday morning the City of Anaheim will ask a state appellate court to overturn the name change. It might be the last chance for the city to save the name "Anaheim Angels."
It is up to a special panel of judges to determine the name's fate. Personally, I don't think there's a chance in hell the city wins this, but you never know. I will be happy when the Name Drama is over for good.
ONE LAST POLL ON THE NAME:
I don't care if you'd prefer "California Angels", "Southern California Angels", "Northern Irvine Angels at State College and Orangewood" or any name the team will not be after the outcome of this case. There are only two choices on this poll because these are the only two candidates who have a realistic chance of winning. Unlike this year's presidential election, you may not vote for the Team Name equivalent to an Independent, Libertarian, Green Party, etc. candidate (personally, my Peace & Freedom candidate is "Nova Scotia Angels of Scioscia" so they can be nicknamed the "Scotia Scioscias"). Obviously, you may also exercise your right not to vote.
In recognition of the electrifying finale to the Name Drama, which name should win this battle?
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan and may or may not be a reflection of human evolution, divine enlightenment or nine cans into a 12-pack.

I would've said Anaheim Angels...
A long time ago but I’ve come to hate the Anaheim City Council and I LOVE my Cooperstown Los Angeles Angels hat.

California Angels
but that’s not happening. so I would like the Anaheim erased altogether, and let it be LAA only.
by eyespy on Sep 10, 2008 8:56 PM PDT 0 recs
Neither is perfect
But only one has a chance of winning. It’s right there in black and white.

Given the history of the name "Los Angeles Angels"...
..that would be my first choice.
But given the legal requirement of having “Anaheim” in the name, and given they play in the city of Anaheim…
I think we are stuck with the current LAA of A. At first, it sounded like a brain cramp. With time, it has become a little easier accept.

Arte will move the team if the city wins
They are calling his bluff in a seriously stupid way.
A real estate prices fall, Arte will quietly buy up a few parcels next to each other and announce plans to move – as his lease out clause allows him – a year or two ahead of time as he begins construction on a stadium. The move will be seamless season-to-season and the platinum triangle will implode in on itself.
And Curt Pringle will carry all the blame.

He will move the team only a few miles away (La Mirada, Brea at the furthest), but outside the Anaheim city limits to be sure.

He would need to buy a LOT of parcels to build a new stadium.
I am not that familiar with the communities you mention above. Are there any large tracts that might bring his interest? Do you know if he may have quietly started the process?

Doubt he would have started process
He’s not an arch-villain from an Allan Moore graphic novel.
But if I were going to buy up land, I might choose Brea.
I once went to the Brea Improv with some friends, on one of their birthdays, to see Louis Black live. As part of his act he recounted a conversation with his agent. “We’ve booked you into the Improv in Brea.” They put an Improve in Brea? “Yeah.” Why?
Like Anaheim a century ago.

Would the Great Park be an option?
Instead of building those homes to finance the GP, they could build a stadium. Imagine that, tailgating at a nice park before going into the stadium. Itd be awesome

The plan for Diamond Bar is Ed Roski, co-owner of the Lakers, Kings, and the Staples Center. My friend’s mom just finished work on the EIR about 2 weeks ago.

Further than Brea.
He gets into LA County.
His team name now makes sense.
His marketing power grows.
He is only 20 minutes further up the same freeway.
He remains near 3 major freeways.
The demographics are already done.
He has a super wealthy, sports-minded, synergistic, development partner.
He has an EIR already completed.
He has an architect already in place.
He has a national media story already in place.
He goes here.

people in south orange county would not drive much further on a regular basis. Part of the angels’ success is the suburban family of 4 market. Angel stadium is in a harmless and easily accessible area. to move into LA county, while it could attract some fairweathered LA people i guess, would alienate the orange county base BIG TIME

You would be trading
the suburban families of 4 from south OC for the suburban families of 4 in Glendora, Azusa, Claremont, Chino, and Diamond Bar, etc. The drive would be closer for them. More accessible. The stadium there would remain harmless.
The south OC base would dwindle. The central OC base would remain intact. The north OC base would remain intact. The Inland Empire base would grow. The LA jokes would stop.
Lots of upside there. It ain’t my money, and it ain’t my decision. But if it were, it would be on my radar.

Not even close to the Indy story.
Relocating a team in broad daylight, well publicized, and as a result of a well-known dispute means that it is not close to Indy.
The idea that Arte has already been suffering some ongoing national level of embarrassment for carrying the name “LA of A” is the PR blunder that he would be fixing. So he would get PR support for fixing that by moving the franchise back into LA County. Not a PR bluder at all. In fact, he would get PR empathy. Not close to the Indy story.
And, at the end of the day, the place I am forecasting is a whole 4.3 miles away from the OC border. It would NOT be an OC disaster. In fact, he would be serving the majority of the same PR demographic population as always.
But, yeah, if you are South OC centric then I would empathize with you. Arte would be going farther away. And the fear of the other side of the Orange Curtain is certainly more palbable down there.

PS...I'm not trying to diss on this vote as I think it's a cool story. I just have had plenty of out-of-town baseball fans using this name debacle as a jump off point of talking trash, and I tell them they're the only ones that care anymore.
Little anecdote: My dad grew up in Anaheim near the stadium, and one of the neighborhood guys was this kinda crazy, literally schizophrenic kid. They were both huge Angels fans, and one night he was in one of his fugue states and kept ranting about how the only way the team would ever win the World Series was if they changed their name to Anaheim Angels. This was about 1975 or so. Prophecy.
Whatever dude.

The Halos have a big following here in the IE, and they have been in Orange County for a long time. It took me a while to get used too LAA, but when all is said and done, what does it matter to the city of Anaheim? I don’t go to Chavez Ravine, I spend my hard earned money on the Angels at the Big A. If I had my choice, it would still be the California Angels.
