Tex on Jim Rome (recap)

recap of Tex on Jim Rome show (10am on Friday, September 12th)

pardon the shoddy shorthand.

Star-divide

Rome:  You've made it look easy since coming to Angels - what's the transition been like coming in to the team?

Tex:  Angels Team so good that he doesn't have to put too much pressure on self, just relax and let things happen - recognizing pitchers/teams from AL West helped make transition easier.   Can't wait to get to post season (first thing he thought of when he was traded to the Angels was that they were on their way to the playoffs)

Rome:  Team clinched so soon - concern over not having much to play for until playoffs?

Tex:  Still have to play for pride, personal goals (Frankie) - still want to have best record in baseball for homefield advantage in playoffs

Rome:  Does the team as a whole have equity in saves mark or is that just something for Frankie?

Tex:  Yes - especially for the pitching staff - Frankie appreciates the staff and the defense behind him, without the rest of the team doing their job Frankie doesn't have save opps that he's had.

Rome:  Any concern Frankie overworked?

Tex:  Don't think so - shown that his fastball has been there and change-up is filthy.  glad he hasn't had to face him this year. Two different sliders, changing speeds on them make Frankie tough.

Rome:  When you come to a new team - do you discuss past/secrets - since you might face each other in the future? Did K-Rod talk about how tough it was to face him or any sort of strategy?

Tex:  Pitchers and hitters don't discuss secrets because of that, just sort of an unspoken rule. Says he hopes they (he and K-Rod) will play together in the coming years.

Rome:  What are you looking for in Free Agency?

Tex:  Two most important things to consider in free agency-1)  team competitive every single year- playoffs/rings  2) A city where his family will be comfortable - financially not a concern.  What about LAAoA?  They do meet the criteria right now.  Family enjoying sunshine with the kids even though his wife doesn't really know anybody here (East Coast roots)  Anaheim will be near the top of the list -

Rome:  Sounds like see ya later?

Tex:  No not at all. #1 goal is to win a world series with the Angels right now - talking about free agency doesn't help himself or the angels right now.

Rome:  What about the Yankees just dumping the cash - to the point where its almost reckless/irresponsible to say no?

Tex:  Not all about the money - otherwise would have taken Texas' offer last year and Atlanta's offer beginning of this year.  money not deciding factor but more about where he can win.

Rome:  S-Rod striking out on 4-2 - do you look for a strike or just something to make contact with?

Tex: Sean being a rookie didn't want to speak up and get on the wrong side of the umpire.  Also, on the road so scoreboard operator wasn't helping - it should never happen.

Rome:  Playing for Soth?

Tex:  Everything he thought it would be.  Success has a lot to do with Soth- everybody knows what's expected.  Play hard, the right way, doing the little things (first to third, stealing bases)- so aggressive, putting pressure on the other teams, that's why they win the close games.

Rome:  When you were traded to the Angels was coming in doing your job enough or did you want to come in and lead?

Tex:  Angels didn't need to trade for me.  Already had 9-10 game lead.  Just saw a team looking to upgrade postseason chances.  Wanted to just play his game, play D and then try to step it up in October and win a world series.  A little surprised that Angels made the deal considering how well they were doing.  The team that needed the least went out and got him.

end of interview,

Rome's musings afterwards: His career/numbers/Boras - going to hit jackpot (good guy/teammate/clutch, plays D).  Wife doesn't really know anybody and we have east coast roots - scary per Rome for Angels fans + Yankees have need/desire.

Rome also says Arte will come after him otherwise Angels wouldn't make that trade to begin with.

as usual, Tex playing the consummate professional, close-to-the vest.

haha- that gnarly eh?

unfortunately can’t type as fast as people speak, and didn’t want to spend much more time than I already did trying to keep up with it.. but being compared with 1866baseball can’t be ALL bad now can it?

"East Coast Roots"

That was the scary part. But he did say that it’s not just about the big payday.

Listened to it on the radio. Great interview. Thanks for the transcription.

Fire Mickey Hatcher... oh wait

East Coast Roots + Not About the Money =

Baltimore.

I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to play in southern California, but I guess I’m biased.

Ultimate money grab

Would be to go to Baltimore.

Things could change, but they are a second-division team who are not in a position to win quickly.

Teixeira would look to be traded again if he signed with Baltimore.

Yeah, but he put contender as top priority.

That’d rule out Baltimore. But contender (except for this year) combined with the east coast roots seems to scream Yankees.

I respect the Yankees

Let them sign Tex, let them sign C.C. Sabathia – it probably makes them a WS contender on paper.

With that said, signing/trading for a number of other high profile players i.e. Jason Giambi, Carl Pavano, A-Rod through this decade has given them no rings to show.

Having the financial resources to go out to get players are great, but it isn’t the way to build a successful team.

he'll try to hide his hand

he’s going to downplay staying for leverage. if he screams “i love L.A.!” the angels won’t offer him as much to stay. Negotiations 101

by yeswecan on Sep 12, 2008 1:34 PM PDT reply actions

interesting

i don’t believe in reading between the lines because it gives me a headache.

but it’s an interesting thought. If he really wanted to stay here, then saying such would hurt his chances at creating a boras-type bidding war and getting the LAA to dump a ton into an offer. Obviously by having boras he wants the most money. but if he wants a certain place (LAA or east coast), then Boras wouldn’t allow him to say so. Boras wants all options open so he can get teams unknowingly bidding against themselves as well as actual other suitors.

Then again, the yanks have a lot of guys who’s only position next year may be limited to 1B/DH due to injuries & age — posada, Damon, matsui…not to mention Giambi if they wind up bringing him back for less.

I still say he’s a yankee next year.

Go Angels!

Thanks for the effort...

I can read between your shorthand and I am sure that was not easy! Interesting…

Gotta think he is a Skankee next year and thereafter, but he will always reminisce fondly about his WS ring with the LAAoA uniform! This way he will get to play with Frankie, as he mentioned above, for the next several years…

nmIn the Skankees! nmIn = fingers on the right hand extended!

Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August...?

Excuse me?

How could he say it’s not about the money?

He might take a little less to go to an ideal team, but if the Yankees offer 50% more, he is going. They’ll just say, yep trust us we’ll win and he’ll be like “OK, good enough.”

by elricsi on Sep 12, 2008 11:08 PM PDT reply actions

in his defense

this will be the first time in 16 years the yankees havent been in the playoffs. Just because we’ve been better than the yankees this decade doesnt mean theyre suddenly below us. Theyre always going to have the resources to shoot for a WS EVERY YEAR

if mark goes to the yankees, theres not much we can really do or say. We cant act like a victim when we’re sporting a 120+ million payroll. If hes an east coaster and they can offer $$$ and winning, then thats the way it is.

Like i said, we’ll just retrun the favor and poach sabathia and continue to out-pitch their weak rotations

by ihearhowie2.0 on Sep 12, 2008 11:20 PM PDT up reply actions

he could pull a clemens

live on the west coast 4 days a week and then fly to ny or wherever they are playin for the game

Exceeding expectations is less a matter of luck than possession of certain assets.

by anaheim angels on Sep 14, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

We will be better than the Skanks for the next five

Just like we have the previous five. We’re built to win every year, and keep winning. They keep trying to win w/ no defense, super-aging offense, and a pitching staff held together by rubber bands.
