Post Season Roster?
The poll on whether we wanted to see Wood or Aybar in there got me thinking.
Because this is the deepest Angels team I have ever seen, I feel that setting up who will make the post season roster, might be Soth's toughest managerial task yet. He has to take into cosideration Veterans who have been there before, fading talent, injuries etc... I'm sure that even some of us here cant really decide. Im not talking who is going to be the 25th guy on the roster, there are some big decisions to be made.
So assuming that Soth will carry 10 pitchers and 15 positional players
I will list the no-brainer picks that aren't really debatable
Pitchers
Lackey,Garland,Saunders, Santana, Arredondo, Shields, Krod, Weaver
Positional Players
Vlad,Tex,Torii, Mathis, Napoli, GA, Figgy,
Some are more likely to make it than others (i.e Rivera etc....)
But what is the rest of your postseason first round roster look like
You have 2 pitchers and 8 positional players to select.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan and may or may not be a reflection of human evolution, divine enlightenment or nine cans into a 12-pack.

my picks
Pitchers
Oliver and O Day
Fielders
Rivera, Willits, OF
Aybar, Wood, Howie, Quinlan, Morales, S rod.
I want lots of speed if we are going to play boston or TB. Maybe Oliver can actually get some leftys out (ie Ortiz) in Fenway and O’day has that funky delivery which might be a nice change of pace from some power pitching since he will probably only be used for an inning or less

First Round
they will carry 10 pitchers (probably increasing to 11 if they make it past the ALDS).
PITCHERS (10)
Lackey
Santana
Saunders
Weaver
Garland
Rodriguez
Shields
Arredondo
Oliver
and this is where it gets interesting. Bulger messed up last night, big time, increasing the chances that Justin Suckfest takes the last spot. Here, I’d like to see a dark horse: Jepsen. He throws hard, and he hasn’t faced any of the Halos’ potential postseason opponents.
OUTFIELDERS (5)
GA
Hunter
Guerrero
Rivera
GMJr.
CATCHERS (2)
Napoli
Mathis
INFIELDERS (5)
Figgins
Quinlan
Aybar
Teixeira
Wood
This leaves three “wild card” spots, one of which goes to Kendrick (if he’s healthy), and to Sean Rodriguez if he’s not. Moreover, even if Howie makes it back (unlikely at this point), my guess is they carry some insurance in the form of Rodriguez. This leaves one spot, to be fought over by Kendry Morales (who’s been playing some OF, increasing his versatility) and Reggie Willits. Note that if Howie can’t play, both Morales and Willits make the cut.
by jjackflash on Sep 17, 2008 9:55 AM PDT 0 recs
maybe adding Howie and subtracting an OF
for the ALCS is Howie can make it back…which at this point seems like a virtual unknown.

Is it a Given
That they take all 5 starters?
I’m not so sure. We will only need 4 starters for the playoffs, possibly 3 for the first round if we have the series with the day off between games 1 and 2. Does the 5th starter automatically go to the bullpen as the long man, or do we go with 4 startes and take an extra reliever. It is something that Mike will have to think about.

you take all five starters
Garland or Weaver could be used in any situation requiring a pitcher to go in long relief, such as a blowout or an injury.

this is it
Jepsen will probably be the pick over bulger
i wish we had a better defensive OF / Pinch runner in AAA to replace GMJ. I guess that’s willits, but neither is the GREAT stolen base PR that is of such value come playoff time in the 9th inning of a close game.

For some stupid reason...
I think Scioscia is going to say “damn all convention” and pick Justin Speier over Jepsen/Bulger.

Agree
actually, Speier is the “conventional” pick because he’s the vehtrun. Picking Jepsen or Bulger would be out of character for him. At this point, I’d rather see either of the two kids (at age 30, Bulger ain’t exactly a kid, but he has little big league experience) than Speier, who has been garbage all season long. At least Jepsen & Bulger throw over 90 m.p.h.; Speier rarely tops that these days.

Would it really be out of character???
Lest we forget that a young kid named Francisco Rodriguez pitched in only 5 2/3 innings in september before being added to the postseason roster. I think Sosh is much more likely to put Jepsen on instead of Speier because of how Speier has pitched this year. He would also do it to have that farely unknown arm in the bullpen.

Let's go back and award GMJ BOTGs for every day no game was scheduled to drive down his percentage.
That will make the Panther minus BOTG formula foolproof in keeping GMJ off the post-season roster.

Yeah but
you also heard Sosh saying “wait til you see this kid” about Frankie. He aint saying that about Bulger or Jepsen. I’ve only heard Sosh GUSH about 2 players – Frankie and Howie. Sure he’s praised others, but with those guys, you could see him getting giddy as he talked about them.

With Howie being so tender
I think S.Rod makes the roster – and if Howie is on the roster I think they take S.Rod as insurance anyway – odd man out is Willits or Morales.
by Rev Halofan on Sep 18, 2008 5:06 PM PDT 0 recs
if Howie's not ready for the ALDS, they'll take him for sure
but you’re right… i think both he and Wood make it, considering the injuries to the middle infield.
this afternoon on AM 830, they were saying that it may come down to SRod and Morales for the ALDS, which is a total bummer… it’s tough to leave either guy off (Morales for his offense, SRod for his speed/defense).
I’m hoping Howie is ready, and that they take the roster that i posted up previously
Kotch would've had that.

I agree with taking Jepsen on board. The unknown factor is huge. And Speier even though he’s the vetteran has to take a seat for the playoffs. Sorry Justin, you’re a nice guy but not pitching well.

shields for sure, and no point of moseley really, since we have 5 starters already. i think its a battle between speier, bulger and jepsen

I'd go with 16 position players, 9 pitchers, in first round
3 starters, plus Weave for long relief, then Jespen-Oliver-Arredondo-Shields-Frankie. Garland can wait until the ALCS.
If you limit the staff to 9, that way you can have 7 bench players. They would be:
Mathis
Wood
Willits
GMJ
Morales
Quinlan
Rodriguez
If you got 15/10 instead, then include Garland & boot Quinlan.
by mattwelch on Sep 27, 2008 12:17 PM PDT 0 recs
you know Mike would never boot the Q
my guess is that it’ll be 15/10, and that the final bench spot comes down to Wood/Morales.
GMJ, Willits and Mathis are locks. (And sadly, Mathis gets a start)
They’ll want S-Rod as Howie insurance.
The Soth has some sort of man-crush on the Q.
My guess is that Morales would get the nod, given his switch-hitting abilities, and ability to play the corner OF spots. You can’t really go wrong with either bat coming off the bench, but I think K-Mo is better suited for the PH role.
Kotch would've had that.

Scioscia already talked as if Wood was a done deal
With the injuries waiting to happen up the middle, I think you can’t afford to not have both Wood & Rodriguez. Especially now that both have gotten the headlights out of their eyes at the plate.
I just don’t see the point of maintaining a seven-man bullpen, under any circumstances. If someone needs to eat five innings in a chunk, let it be Weaver, and that’s that.
