Hostility Abounds?

A blogwhore is someone who makes comments and posts on Halos Heaven with the sole purpose of promoting their own shitty blog. You can pimp whatever you are writing elsewhere if you are a good, regular member of this site. Look at Scareduck - great member of our community here and you wouldn't even know he runs a blog that Peter Gammons has pimped on ESPN. Once in a while he links to his own blog when it is appropriate. That is the type of pimping here that is okay. You gotta be here and earn it.

Some dude "WILDWILL" put a FanPost up this morning about the post-season roster. Problem was he blogwhored his baseball site - this is his first FanPost ever on Halos Heaven - and EVEN WORSE, there was a FanPost beneath his on the same subject.

Well "Wild Will"  is so bright, a college guy, that he left Arredondo off his important postseason roster.

So then I let him have it... and he erases the Fan Post. Then he creates a FanPost called "Hostility Abounds" where he rags on me for trying to make this site a good place where people who make thoughtful FanPosts are rewarded instead of being demoted.

So the community points out - in his "Hostility Abounds" FanPost - that he is a thin-skinned baby. And what does he do? He erases his 2nd FanPost in less than an hour... a new record in babyhood!

But I copied it with the comments. Read below:

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Hostility Abounds

by wildwill on Sep 17, 2008 12:02 PM PDT

After reading a scant few comments to my first fanpost here by the MANAGER of this blog, I’ve decided that Halos Heaven is not a fun place to be, and the hostility I feel is nowhere NEAR deserved.

So screw you people I’m out. I guess you all think you’re better Halos fans than the rest of us, more power to you.

Fans like you give the Angels a bad name. No wonder the Halos are the 2nd most hated team in the Majors, uppity fans will do that.

Way to compete…..Having Rev in your sh

Thick skin to win here my friend.

I am not trying to put words in Rev’s mouth here but I think it was the tack in which you made your (first) post that got you put on blast.

Maybe you could have said you are a Huge Hallo fan making you a HH but a first time poster on Halo Heaven that also has a blog covering the Angels then listed it in your profile or signatue line.

Maybe he could have been a bit nicer in his response to me as well. I would have gladly edited my post if it were that offensive to him. In any case, the OWNER of a blog site should treat his readers better if he wants to keep them.

Welcome to the interweb

First of all, I’m guessing that you’re the latest in what has been an absurd influx of late (or just today) of people trying to get more traffic to their personal blog via HH. Or maybe you actually had something to bring to the table. I guess we’ll never know.

Secondly, people interact on the web as if they were in their cars – in a fashion they would never do face to face with someone. The internet is a giant partyline of anonymous hostility. Most of the time it’s too much for me, and I bug out. In other words, don’t expect to find commonplace reciprocity among strangers on the web.

It’s not like a regular form of self-promotion or advertising. You shout into the crowd, just as you would in any other media facet, but this time the crowd yells back.

Wrong assumptions

No, I’ve actually been a reader of HH since before the move to SB Nation. I had the updates on my google reader as well. I’m not trying to pimp my own blog any more than anyone else does, because it’s NOT Halos-centric all of the time, most of the time it’s about cheap baseball cards. But that’s besides the point.

I’ve been on the net since before there WAS a net, back in the day with the USENET, I’m well aware of anonymous hostility. I guess I expected better from Angels fans. I was sadly mistaken.

I guess I shouldn’t have had higher expectations, after all this is a guy who chooses a "blame of the game" for every loss.

Actually, yes.

I’m working at UCLA and my girlfriend TA’s for the snot-nosed bitches. They’re the whinest sacks of pussy I’ve EVER seen. They whined about taking a summer course; these students weren’t freshmen, they were juniors and seniors! They complained that an 85% A-rate for the class was too low.

Anyway, on you, Rev. You’re able to dish it out because you’re in a position of power. You seem to be as stubborn as a government mule, but I dare say without your sheriff’s hat, you might not take it so well. Though, this is said tongue-in-cheek, as I dish it at full force and take it — usually to the brink of banning. But you do come off as a harsh bastard to those new to the community on occasion.

i didnt see rev as a “harsh bastard” when i first joined a year ago

i saw rev as a guy who knows his angels inside and out. i will admit that i was intimidated to post when i first joined but now i realize i’m up there with the halos knowledge. i guess at times its too much to ask for an educated posting! as for the F-UCLAer he is a bum and shouldnt belong to communities or life if he cannot take the good with the bad or visa-versa.

so rev, keep up the good work! its much appreciated!

There is an “Angel in the outfield” and his name is GA! ps. he is lazy but not a bum GO HALOS!

Good Thing Halofanatic isn't so sensitive

Halofanatic made one of the all time crazy post Things the ninja must do before the playoffs

He was blasted for weeks about that post, but to his credit he left it up on the site and took his lumps. I respect that.

This guy “wildwill” ran home yelling about how its a tough world. Glad he was never on any team I played for.

Rev can be tough as I pointed out to him. I have had a fair share of banter with Rev, but this is a place to voice opinions and with so many members not everyone is going to see eye to eye.

This is a Angel family and its dysfunctional like a lot of families from time to time, but the thing that keeps us coming back is the love that all HH members have for the Angels.

I’ve seen lists like that from DN Scoop before. One site that I used to work for had a value of $150,000, to which the owner of said site said “damn, I wish I could get someone to buy it for HALF that.” It’s a perceived value, not an actual value.

Because it amuses me to no end. I was gone, history, you wouldn’t have heard a thing from me ever again, but Rev decided to be the ultimate jerk and repost what I had removed. Good going there Rev, way to beat a dead horse.

by wildwill on Sep 17, 2008 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know, I'm surprised by that move, too.

But in a positive way. I thought it was he who had removed the post and all traces of it and might have admonished him for it; however, it turned out to be the exact converse situation: you wanted to remove the material, he wanted to keep it and let it shine as an example, which is usually not his MO.

by shiftyeyedgoat on Sep 17, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope

OBVIOUSLY I made a serious error in judgment in posting what I thought was a cool post. For the record, I didn’t SEE the other post about the playoff roster, and I’m sure sorry that I was a “blogwhore” according to the Rev. In trying to rectify said error by removing the offensive material and making a point, I get blasted yet again.

When this thread is done, I’m done, but until you stop talking about me, I’m going to respond right back. Either that or ban me from your site.

so you must have at least thought it valuable of your time. You had opinions, and wanted to get feedback. so you made an error or two, big whoop. My first fanpost was completely blasted, and as you can see, i hadnt really recovered since then untill about two or three days ago. ive made 7 fanposts to around 1400 comments, and 2 fanposts were in the past two days or so. this really is the largest connection of halo fans on the web, and please stick around, and youll find that while we all have different opinions, and all get way to amped up in the gamethreads, we are generally ones who dont mind arguing over our lineups and whos better, but its all good natured. The one thing we dont really like are when people come in just to promote their own site. Now im not saying you did (i didnt see the post, so i cant really say anything), but the Rev has absolutely no tolerance to any posts that seemingly have any links to other sites, and it appears as if you came off as trying to promote your own site

I would

NEVER insult GA – he’s one of my all-time faves. Even a crappy game for GA is better than 90% of other players. Arte had better pony up some big bucks to keep GA an Angel for LIFE.

For that matter, I would NEVER insult a single member of the squad (OK except maybe Scot Shields if he gives up more runs in relief). I love this team, and THIS specific team to no end. Again, you can flame me all you want, but not the Halos. No way.

Random Thoughts

Angels fans take a lot of shit. Agree? Disagree? Not see any difference between the shit we take for our condescended expansion team and the traditional rivalry other teams take? Does this general national notion about our boys foster a certain punchiness?

Or does the above not correllate to anything? Are we just like eveyrone else on the web, and simply the popularity of this blog has attracted more people, and therefore more interweb behavior that has nothing to do with our team identity?

Let’s face it: across SBNation, they f***ing hate us.

Now, Will, to you specifically:

Tell me about yourself. I do not feel any particular hostility towards you – to be honest, I like you a lot right now. But when you yourself post something like “fighting on the internet” and thereby condemn yourself I worry… Are you a high-functioning individual? I know you say you’re a college graduate, but…. are you a communications major or something? Because I’m going to start feeling guilty if I keep developing this feeling that I’m being contentious or provoking someone who is not as high fuctioning than we’re treating you…

OK honesty

Yes, I function with a fair amount of intellect, which is why I understand that fighting over the nets is a futile effort. If I had something better to do with my time at the moment, I would be doing it, but the fact is that today has been fucked up from the get-go for me. Besides, I haven’t gotten this much attention in a long time, and the sick part of me is enjoying it.

If you must know, I got my degree in English from UCLA with an emphasis in literature of the 20th Century, and I graduated with a 3.24. I spent 18 years trying to get my BA, not because I’m stupid, because I never had the time to go full time what with working to support myself from the time I was 17 years old.

Did I error this morning? Oh hell yeah. I made the mistake of being drawn into an internet fight in a location where I was vastly outnumbered and had no power whatsoever. In that circumstance, with my back up to the wall, I fought back. Though to be honest, I really thought that if I deleted said offending posts that it would be over with and I could move on. Obviously that wasn’t the case and here we are.

My ENTIRE point here is that we are ALL Angels fans, and a divided nation is a conquered nation. Does the Red Sox Nation fight amongst themselves? Do Yankees fans secretly hate one another? As you pointed out, Angels fans are derided universally, and much more so in areas outside of Anaheim. As a native Angelino, I wear my Angels gear proudly because I know the Halos started at the West Coast Wrigley Field. I know they played in Chavez for a season. They were the CALIFORNIA Angels when I was growing up, so that meant that they belonged to the entire state, not just Anaheim. I’ve been a fan for longer than probably most of you have been alive. I say probably because I don’t know the stats for the site, but I count my fandom from 1971 when my dad took me to my first game as a baby.

Sure, I’m a blogwhore, show me a blogger who isn’t? Google Rev Halofan, he’s all over the place pimping Halos Heaven. Should I have been more coy, perhaps. But one doesn’t expect the sheer ration of shit I’ve gotten for making a couple of honest mistakes.

Answer

I didn’t see the other fanpost to be honest. In fact, I’m still not sure what a “fanpost” really is. I thought it was like some sort of blog entry, which is what I wanted to do. I didn’t proclaim that my post was any better than anyone else’s.

But I’m sure glad you “set me straight”, your tact and willingness to help your users along really show what kind of individual that you are.

In fact, your whole attitude started this, not me. I was willing to leave well enough alone, I removed the offending post and removed the second ill-advised post and had left the site, only to discover that you put them right back up. Now tell me, what kind of mature individual INTENTIONALLY goes around trying to make someone else’s mistakes into fodder for this kind of meaninglessness?

As for your own blogwhoring, I’m sure given time I could find some.

Your Argument With ME Boils Down To

You think you should be coddled and that i should behave in mature manner.

I could have been more polite. But I sure as hell am not going to act in a manner that is predictable so that you can manipulate me and this blog.

You have been around this blog a LONG time and went for the jugular. Had you a thick skin and posted something like “Rev, take your meds” I would have laughed at myself and awarded you one “zing” at my expense.

But you read Finnegan’s Wake and are so much better than us all that you are immune from any hazing or challenges.

Sorry 3.24, you earn your wings here.

by Rev Halofan on Sep 17, 2008 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Coddled?

No. Hell no, I’ve been around the nets long enough to know the score.

BUT YES, I expect you to act in a mature manner, which is probably too much for you. I have no desire to manipulate you whatsoever, I don’t know who the hell you think you are that you’re so important that you could even think that people want to manipulate YOU. Your self-esteem is unnecessarily high.

No, what I got from you was mean-spirited and spiteful, and in no way constructive, nor could it be construed as hazing in any way, shape or form. I went for your jugular because you went for mine buddy, and THEN when all was said and done, you have the NERVE to repost everything like you HAD to win at the internents.

So it boils down to this Rev: You think your shit don’t stink, and I say it does. I never ONCE said I was better than anyone else, you have put words in my mouth that I have not typed. You don’t know me, so don’t even think that you know what my intentions are with anything.

the best part was the subtitle beneath that said

This is really what Scientology teaches you.

Better than that

“This is what Scientologists actually believe”

Ugh

No, LITERATURE, not crap.

If you really want to know, get accepted to UCLA’s English Department and take the classes yourself. If you can get in that is.

In all seriousness

What do they consider 20th Century Lit?

I myself enjoyed but one English class in high school & university because my reading seems to fall outside the common definition of “literature”

What I liked about English class in university

Was taking Intro to Poetry where the guy to girl ratio was 1:15.

I had a Yogalates class with a 1:23

Great reason to wake up in the morning

by TheTypingFiend on Sep 17, 2008 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would have received a rec'd

if it said “Great reason to ‘get up’ in the morning.”

Dance class was better

Same ratio with close…physical…contact. And I took it only all the required classed were booked. I was going to drop it and look for another class…till I saw my classmates. Got a “C” in the class but had the time of my life.

20th Century Literature

Would be anything written with literary merit during the years 1901 to 2000 technically. However, most scholars would consider that works published late 1890’s really began the movement.

We’re talking authors like:

Hemingway
Faulker
Joyce
Cather
and so many more, I’m sure I’m forgetting quite a few. I could go to my bookshelf and post a majority of the books we read, but then it would take a while and I have no inclination to do so.

you throw in Steinbeck

and it’s officially the most boring class of all-time. I like literature, but that class sounds mind-numbing

Steinbeck & Faulkner

were one of the few authors I enjoyed.

Them & Vonnegut

Is Faulkner the guy who does the stream of consciousness stuff?

That stuff was trippy and confusing as hell.

Several Classes

It’s not just one class it’s more like 5 or 6 focusing on the novel in the 20th Century as a whole. I did have to do Grapes of Wrath which I rather enjoyed, because looking BACK at literature that was developed in a specific time/place is far more interesting.

No that's OK

I graduated, I don’t have to do the heavy reading anymore. I stick to historical fiction now or fun stuff…Christopher Moore, Bernard Cornwell, Robert Crais, Jim Butcher, Neal Stephenson (OK he’s not easy).

Willa Cather was a Red Sox fan

Hemmingway blew his brains out

Faulkner was a NASCAR type

And James Joyce is a distant relative of mine.

So you read the elite – and they printed a ddegree on toilet paper for you after they conned you into the same student loan scam that millions fall for and now you are surfing the internet with 19-year old community college dropouts and a sociopath like myself.

Wow, the value of a liberal-arts college education might actually be a NEGATIVE in a person’s development…

What you should have done was

get an engineering degree and begun slaving away for 70 – 80 hrs/week, accumulated a lot of stock options, become a paper millionaire, and then watched it all go “BOOM” at the beginning of the decade! That builds character! :)

by Brew Angel on Sep 17, 2008 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but this time

It’s all the financial-sector types, not so much the techies, and that’s not a sector that was built on the forget-salary-just-give-me-stock-options model of compensation. If the IB and HF-types have been prudent with their 6- or 7-figure cash bonuses, they’ll be okay. It’s the staffers and entry-level lackeys that will take it on the chin this time.

Heh. I said “Lackey.”

by Brew Angel on Sep 17, 2008 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point.

Here is a link to a Q & A with former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff. “Financial sector was out of control…” Sobering stuff.

That's what my dad

Wanted for me, not my cup of tea. My paternal Grandfather was an engineer, had a heart attack and dropped dead at age 50.

by wildwill on Sep 17, 2008 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...how to respond

To an ignorant statement such as that.

It’s like you’re not even trying. Do you perhaps realize that in all of this hullabaloo you have some culpability as well? You can’t come up with a RATIONAL response for my replies and you’ve degenerated into disparaging an entire educational system? Wow, holy shit mister perfect you’ve got me covered. You know everything about everything and you’re not unwilling to tell others we’ve gotten it wrong eh?

My first job after graduating I got a 10K increase in salary from what I was making BEFORE I got my degree. WHEN I go back into the workforce (I’m a stay-at-home Father at the moment, and if you even THINK about dissing me for staying home to take care of my child, then you only prove how much of an asshole you really are), I can command a much higher salary and am much more employable than those who don’t have a degree or the 20 year history of working in corporate America.

As it stands now I’m planning on going into a teaching internship program, where they don’t let you IN unless you have a Bachelor’s Degree.

So Mister Know-It-All I don’t have a Degree, what do you say to that? Sure, I’ve got student loans, but I also have the satisfaction that I did something that not a lot of people CAN do. And I did it at my favorite college of all time, on my own schedule to my OWN satisfaction, not to anyone else’s. SO yes, I’m going to brag about my accomplishment, because to me it IS an accoplishment.

What have you done lately?

This should be it for now

Just ignore the rest. Same to you Rev – it doesn’t make ANY sense to continue this.

Let the subject be the Angels; or Erin’s things, if you want a discussion with Shifty.

I can't drink

Beer anymore, nor alcohol of any kind due to a liver problem I developed by drinking too much in my 20’s. Which is one of the reasons I’m a MMJ patient.

And “sharing” my meds is frowned upon by the community (that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do it though). I’ve often found internet enemies become friends upon face-to-face.

It’s funny we’ll type the most vile shit to each other because you can’t see one another, but if you’re speaking to someone face-to-face, it becomes more polite.
