UPDATE: New magic number: 1

***9:03 PM UPDATE: With the Angels win, the magic number is now 1.

The Angels can clinch home-field advantage in the first round tonight with a win and a White Sox loss.

My reasoning:

The Angels are 93-59, the White Sox are 84-68. If the Angels finish ahead of the White Sox, the worst they can possibly do is be the #2 seed in the AL, because:

* The Halos would have a better record than any AL Central team
* If the wild card comes out of the East, the Angels would play the wild card team, and the wild card team never gets home-field advantage.
* If the wild card came out of the Central, even if the Angels had a worse record than the AL East winner, the Angels would still have a better record than the Central winner, meaning the Angels would have home-field in the first round.

Game 1 will either be Oct. 1 (Wednesday) or Oct. 2 (Thursday).

Note: I first posted this at Bugs & Cranks. I'm usually not one to promote my stuff, but I hadn't seen anyone else mention this here. (I didn't want to start another epic post like Hostility Abounds a couple of days ago.)

So, I’d say you have escaped the Rev’s hot seat.

Thanks

I’m a long-time lurker of HH — only started commenting this season, and even then, not overly frequently.

so what's our magic number for

home field advantage for the 2nd round?

same

pretty much. It’s still 2 against Chicago. It’s 6 against Boston, and 9 against Tampa Bay.

Yep, jjackflash is right

They have to have the best record (or the best record remaining) to have homefield in the ALCS.

I don’t like to think that far ahead though, because they have to win the first round first.

Looking too far ahead...

I’m not considering there’s only a week left of the regular season. :)

next question...

against which teams do we own tie breakers against? Only Boston (which is why the magic number is 6 and not 7), correct ?

We split against the White Sox

And if they were to catch and tie us, they’d probably own the 2nd tiebreaker (winning percentage inside division).

So I left the magic number at 2 just to be safe.

no risk of the Rev's wrath

It’s all about whether someone is sincerely contributing to THIS community or trying to leech it for their own blog’s benefit. obviously, gilbert, you are an active member in this community, whereas others were not. They began their activity by trying to use this site’s popularity for their own selfish gains, whereas you have not.

I actually use this site for my own selfish gains

I don’t have a blog; I’m computer illiterate; I’m socially challenged; I have a 1 in 5 chance of someone actually responding to a comment.

The way I figure it, is that even by accident, someone will read what I wrote…which is a hell of a lot better odds of someone paying attention in person.
