GA got that offense clicking
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
Can we give a shoutout to Speier
his slight meltdown dropped him from panther contention, but he definately did pitch very well getting out of that jam in the 6th (?)

where are the GA haters?
You guys seem to have disappeared. I admit I was one of those who thought GA was done early last year, but he continues to defy our logic.
They're too lazy to post now

Yeah...
his OBP is still in the toilet and makes a shitload of outs. At least he’s hitting for good average in the second half.
I almost wish he would do worse so that Arte doesn’t think about resigning him…
But, a 1 year deal for $5 million isn’t awful. It is nice to see him playing well, don’t get me wrong, but even playing well his OBP is .330 – that is awful for a corner OF’er.
Jim Scully
Sign him for half a year.............
the second half……and pay him spring training cash for the first 81 games………..

Yes, I agree...
Where are you all in regard to GA these days?
At what point will one of you many haters admit that you’ve been wrong, wrong, wrong, when it comes to #16?
He’s held to a far different standard than any other player on this team. What gives?
I think it might be time for some of you to recognize.

Actually,
if we’re splitting hairs, the colon probably doesn’t belong. (I think that might somehow be a joke in its own right).
Thank you, though; I like it just the way it is.

Thanks for the clarification...
being a GA defender will, apparently, make a guy rather paranoid ;-)
I’m glad you’re willing to quote, too. I’ve been paraphrasing all this time.
I think all the GAH8RS should be forced to tattoo “GAH8R” on their foreheads so that we can more easily identify them at the stadium. And every Angel “fan” who has ever booed the man should find the nearest blackboard and start writing, “I will not hate on GA” at least 1,000 times.
Now, put Jason Bulger on the mound, Kendry Morales at shortstop, scatter a bunch of other minor leaguers around the field and let’s go win.

SARCASM ALERT! (Use an indignant and outraged Stephen Colbert voice for the following:)
I’M SO F***ING ANGRY!!!! ANOTHER F***ING STUPID SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THE STUPID ANGELS WON!!!! F****ING HELL!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE THE F**** IS JOE GRAHE???
(ending sarcasm)
Oh yeah, Cadillac is panther.
Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!
I think colbert would give Panther to Doritos
Cheesytastic.

If the bears eat the Doritos,
it could given a new dimension to the saying, “Does a bear s**t in the woods?” Actually this frightens me, as I have a horrible image of orange, glowing crap.

GA for Panther
I’ll openly admit that I’m a GA hater, and I still don’t think we should re-sign him at the end of the season.
That being said, I have a signed 2003 All-Star jersey of his, and I certainly appreciate everything he’s done for the organization.
He’s been incredibly hit recently, and I hope he keeps it up… we’ll need it in a few weeks. :)
Kotch would've had that.
I'm a GA fan
I’m also a huge fan of GA lazy jokes.
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with a
good GA lazy joke.
If GA weren’t so lazy, even he would enjoy them. Apparently, there’s also nothing wrong with a bad GA lazy joke.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 20, 2008 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Shouldn't re-sign him at any price?
What’s he worth?
The option, I believe is for $12M. The buy-out is for $3M. Effectively, the price to re-sign GA is $1M less than the team will be paying HGH Jr. next season.
There is a price that is right so long as GA is willing to negotiate.
Be careful what all of you wish for, though; if the Halos don’t sign him, another team in the AL West will (assuming they are willing to pay more than the Rays…Joe Maddon will want him at DH, guaranteed). At that point, we’ll be paying a shithead like HGH Jr. $10M/year and Texas/Oakland/Seattle will have signed GA for $7M, maybe $8M and he’ll be killing the Angels every time he plays them (even if only in the second half of the season).
The Angels and GA throw the option/buyout out the window and GA signs for $7.5M/1 year with a club option. He’s earned that much, to be sure. Is he worth that? Or would you rather see Billy Idol (sorry, Reggie Willits) out in LF? Or can we replace GA with two average players (yes, that is a gratuituos Bavasi reference, sorry)?
The Angels have NEVER treated their veterans right (see Don Baylor, Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Brian Downing, etc.). Carew retired as asked. Baylor, Ryan, and Downing all had much more left and proved the Angels to be idiots. Do we want to see that repeated with the best player the organization has ever produced (hey, I loved Timmy Salmon too, but let’s be real here)?
I don’t.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 20, 2008 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions
well, to me, it depends on what happens with Teixeira
If we re-sign Teixeira, I would MUCH rather see a young Kendry Morales out in the RF/LF/DH role… he has a ridiculously high upside (which we’re just getting glimpses of right now), and he’s far cheaper.
Also, don’t throw out the possibility of Juan Rivera. With GA gone, Rivera becomes the everyday left fielder. Even if they re-sign Teixeira, we could use Rivera in LF/DH, Hunter in CF, KMo in RF/LF/DH, and Vlad at DH/RF.
GMJ is no more than a very expensive pinch-hitter, pinch-runner and late-inning defensive replacement on this team. We all know it’s a sunk cost… if we can magically get rid of him, this all becomes a lot easier.
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Sep 20, 2008 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions
and I think a $7.5MM/yr deal is WAY too high, given his age.
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Sep 20, 2008 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, $3M for nothing (the price to tell GA to hit the road)
seems like WAY too much too. But $7.5M/yr is, relatively speaking, a bargain in today’s game. If GA’s willing to throw the buyout away, then they’re really only paying about $4.5M. That’s a frickin’ steal. Let’s not forget the home team discount he gave in early 2004 either (signed before his production slipped, while he was still mashing).
As for his age, this his best base stealing year in some time, he still turns on ANYONE’S fastball, and, despite it never being acknowledged here, he remains damned fast down the line for a man his size (regardless of age). He’s willing to DH, as he’s now proven, and Kendry Morales still has a ways to go before he can be deemed capable of easily replacing a man like GA (I think highly of Kendry, don’t get me wrong). If GA were that easy to replace, there would be guys all over the league like him. There’s not (yes, insert your OPS+ or Bavasism or whatever justification it takes to call him ‘average’ here).
Let’s see him get those next 638 hits with the Angels.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 20, 2008 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions
154 hits, 14 HR, 80 RBI
GA has only 100 more AB’s than GMJ this year and by comparison, GMJ only has 98H/7HR/41RBI.
by Downing Rules on Sep 20, 2008 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions
157 hits, 15 HR, 83 RBI,
but your point is well taken.
A couple more good games from GA and he leads the team in both hitting and RBI, despite his miserable early stretch(es). And he’s fallen out of bed to 26 2B (moving him one ahead of Mel Ott, Harold Baines, and Jeff Bagwell for his career). Early next year, he collects his 500th career double. As early as next year, he ties TED WILLIAMS for all-time doubles.
Oh, and he might just be the best teammate any of these Angels has EVER had.

Debatable news flash:
GA is a better defender in LF than Rivera (Rivera’s brutal, but, yes, with a good arm).
Rivera is 30 years old (31 in July ‘09) and due for a free agent payday of his own. Since so many people see Rivera as the better player on paper (where relatively few games are played, of course), what will he be asking? The first $3M of GA’s next contract is free.
Rivera is already (leg) injury prone, filling out by the day, and a terrible defender. And, please don’t forget, if Juan Rivera admits to being 30, how old is he really? Add to that the fact that he’s not aging well for a man of 30, and why exactly is he the better option than GA?
Where would you put your money if there were a foot race between Juan Rivera and GA? Hmmm. Who would you prefer in the batter’s box in a pivotal playoff or WS game? Hmmm. Sounds like a lot of eggs headed toward the Juan Rivera basket.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 20, 2008 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Injury Prone?
Rivera broke his leg on a freak play at 1B. Howie is Injury prone……He runs and his leg falls off. Rivera runs and some dumb ass gets in front of him and breaks his leg. You tell me who is injury prone. And yes I would rather have RIVERA over GA next year.
Oh and Rivera is not Miguel Tejada btw. And if what your saying about his age were to be true (It Aint) he would still be 50 years younger than GA.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where has Rivera been the last few games?
And I think we know that you’d choose G.A. over Rivera; you’ve been pretty clear about that.
Come to think of it, though, twenty years ago, I, too, was sometimes fooled by the player on paper. God, to me, Mark McLemore was going to be better than Bobby Grich…I remember it well.
Now, put Chris Pritchett at first, Bobby Rose at second, Pete Coachmen at third and let’s go win.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 21, 2008 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Sorry, Rivera over G.A.
Freudian slip.
by GarretSaysSuckIt on Sep 21, 2008 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, and where was Rivera when he broke his leg?
Right, playing podunk winter ball, something G.A. didn’t have to do that at that age because he had already established himself as one of the Angel greats.
So, to be clear, Juan Rivera will be 31 next season, with year-round mileage, a very serious leg injury (that makes him one of the slowest players on the Angels), and a tendency to play out his welcome with teams.
It’s not that I don’t recognize Rivera’s talent, it’s that it’s not so overwhelming that it is worth relying on to quite that extent. Robb Quinlan is a capable Major Leaguer, but he can’t replace G.A. And I’m not entirely convinced that Juan Rivera is leaps and bounds above Quinlan either. They are what they are, journeymen Major Leaguers, utilized to their strengths by one of the game’s best managers.

I've been saying all along: the halos should offer 2yr/$16M...
he won’t get the option picked up, but I think they will make a decent offer like the one I propose.
