Bill Dwyer hates your favorite team
This article has me enraged, so I'll present some money quotes without comment. Let's discuss to our hearts' content.
The best team in baseballisn't even the biggest story in its own city. Right now, Los Angeles is all caught up in the Dodgers' magic number and only casually interested in the Angels' magic team.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim adopted a city, and the city it adopted mostly shrugs in return.
We are all Dodgers, all the time, 24/7 Blue Heaven. What if they were a really good team? What if they win another playoff game? Will we offer our firstborn in celebration?...
The days ahead will be exciting. All eyes will be on the Dodgers, as clinching-time approaches. The headlines will get bigger, the news broadcasts louder. Those who get paid handsomely these days to count Web hits will do so joyously, because Dodger buzz always drives Internet clatter.
It is late September, almost always Dodger time here. All eyes will be focused on Chavez Ravine. In this city, the Dodgers will have it all.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

umm he left out the last sentence
i read the article in the paper this morning:
"In this city, the Dodgers will have it all. Except the best team
Also: who cares? If the dodgers tried calling themselves the Orange County dodgers of LA, we’d still be Angels fans. The dodgers had that market dominated long before we did. Them being more important to Dodgers fans isnt a burn on us.
We’ll just keep winning while they can get aroused by simply making the playoffs in a terrible division

Why all the Dodger hate?
Our coaching staff is comprised of Lasorda disciples. Give some kudos to the traditional top dogs in the town. Yes, we are up-and-coming, but respect the blue as well.

i have no problem with the players or coaches of the dodgers. I actually like a few of their players quite a bit(loney, martin)
but the article was about la FANS. and anyone whos been to a dodger game or an angel game where the dodgers are visiting knows that dodger fans dont deserve respect from anyone. obscene, loud, disrespectful. theyre scum.

The difference between Dodgers and Angels fans
Eric Karros, upon his return in a visiting Cubs uniform, was an endless cascade of boos.
Jose Molina, in his first at-bat after returning as a Yankee (and even after) got applause. I could say the same for Scott Spiezio and Jarrod Washburn as Mariners.
That is all you really need to know.

How about the team playing a video tribute to to Spiezio in his first game here as a Mariner.
If the dodgers tried to pull a class-act move like that, the fans would start shooting at the jumbo-tron (we all know they’re armed and dangerous, right?).

Scioscia is an Alston disciple, not Lasorda disciple
And in general, he gives more cred to his minor league managers than to Tommy.
by mattwelch on Sep 23, 2008 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Explain Matt
I don’t think Scioscia played an inning for #24 Walter Alston. May have met him at Vero or something but if I am not mistaking Lasorda was Scioscia’s only big league manager and Lasorda is the Alston disciple.

Taking some liberties
Alston was a fairly quiet manager, Tommy is all rah-rah. Tommy was notorious for burning out his arms by overuse (see his disciple Dusty Baker for a good example); not sure what Alston did, but he operated in the years before pitch counts, anyway.
Witty .sig goes here.
by scareduck on Sep 24, 2008 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You are correct, according to BR
Scioscia’s playing career 1980 to 1992
and
Alston’s coaching career 1954 to 1976
Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that Scioscia came from the Dodger blue. We should respect that tradition, as much as it is our inner-city rival and as goofy as their fans can be. They gave us a great manager, the best our organization has ever seen.
by Downing Rules on Sep 24, 2008 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm going from memory here, but...
…. I distinctly recall Scioscia, in a few of those many Lasorda-is-a-genius articles (probably by Plaschke), going out of his way to point out that he was not a Lasorda a disciple, and that he was much more influenced by one other Dodger stalwart. If not Alston (and you’re right, the timeline don’t make sense), it was a longtime minor league manager or something. It’s really stuck out on me the few occasions I’ve seen him talk about it, and if I ever again have five spare minutes I’ll go look up the citation.
by mattwelch on Sep 25, 2008 4:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know he has always given a lot of credit to those Dodgers catchers of old
that were always around Vero. I am sure there is a lot of things that Scioscia has taken from all the managers and coaches he has played for. I also think he has made some adjustments and fit it to his own personality.

was the editor of the Times sports pages until 2006, i.e. the man who thought that both Bill Plaschke and T.J. Simers made good columnists.
What’s obvious about this column is that it’s perfectly content-free, that is, he has nothing backing those opinions. It would have been a lot more convincing had he mentioned something like actual Neilsen ratings.

the hack with that
The only hack in Bill Dwyer is the way he hacked away at the LAT’s sports staff until he got it right. Make that perfect. His mid-1990s team of Chris Dufresne, T.J. Simers, Jim Murray, Scott Ostler, Gene Wojciechowski, Tim Kawakami, Mike Downey, Allan Malamud and Bill Plaschke might’ve been the finest team of writers in history. So now Dwyer says what so many Angel fans have been yelling since 2005: We’re not L.A., got it? It’s called the truth. The lie is the Angels’ full name. They have zip to do with Los Angeles. This is nothing like the Jets and Giants; fans in News York and Jersey love those teams. Los Angeles fans root for the Dodgers, pure and simple. The Angels might as well be in a foreign county. Oh, they are.
Go Mizzou.

You are so wrong
about so many things in such a short space, I don’t know where to start.
But let’s start with the fact that, as far as the Angels and Los Angeles are concerned, you do know what “Los Angeles” means, right? And that the team played its first 5 years in Los Angeles, and was called the Los Angeles Angels, and that the franchise that was awarded to Gene Autry was the Los Angeles Franchise for the American League? Oh, and every night, literally tens of thousands of people from Los Angeles County attend Angels games. For many, the Big A is a lot closer and easier to get to than Dodger Stadium.

If you live in the SGV
especially the eastern part (e.g., Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont, Diamond Bar), you’re a lot closer to the Big A.
As for me, although Pasadena is a lot closer to Dodger Stadium, the last time I went to a game there, it took me 47 minutes from the time I got to my car until I pulled into my driveway…about the same as going to the Big A, which is probably 30 miles farther away. So yes, easier to get to/from as well.

“One astute baseball observer, the columnist who types on Page 2 of this sports section, pointed to a reason for this. Speaking of various methods of inducing sleep before surgery, Page 2 typed, "Instead of anesthesia to put you to sleep, they have you listen to Mike Scioscia being interviewed.”
That means the Angels’ manager is boring. "

This guy might be a Dodger hack,
but he’s in every way, 100% correct.
The Dodgers can, do, and in all likelihood generate more “buzz”, stimulate more anticipation, and generate more fans simply because of the location and the “history”, however disconnected it may be from the current incarnation of the team.
The Angels have a fantastic team for a relatively small, but loyal, fanbase. We are the chosen few, the derth and the diehard. We will not falter on a bandwagon team, but we also must realize that a bandwagon is good for this team. We need the flaky, puerile, bemused fans that will wander through the turn-styles and shout the glory of the team from somewhere beyond the back page of the newspaper.
The Dodgers are the big brother who burned out, but was there first. And we all know baseball is a game of seniority and tradition. So for better, worse, or Steve Physioc, this team is our bane, and our pleasure. This is our Angels baseball.

This link for 2007 FOX telecasts of MLBsays the Angels and Dodgers tied at 2.4 rating with a 6 share for the Angels vs. Bosox and 7 for Dodgers vs. Cubs, but this link showing Nielson ratings for this season says the following:
FSN: FSN West received its highest single game Angels rating for the ‘08 season with the Angels-Yankees July 31 telecast, which earned a 2.19 HH rating. The Dodgers also recorded their all-time highest-rated game on FSN Prime Ticket for the August 1 D’Backs-Dodgers game, which earned a 5.19 HH rating (FSN)….
Which says the Dodgers’ highest rated game this year was a full 3 rating points higher than the Angels’ highest.

The whole “But that’s not the team that’s REALLY captured L.A.’s imagination!” thing is a marvelous bit of self-fulfilling prophecy, not hard to do when you can walk from your office to Dodger Stadium (if, in fact, you ever got yr ass out of the building, or ever — shudder — walked up a hill).
I was at the Dodger playoff game in 2004 (back when the Times was saying the same stupid thing), and there was no contest between the fan buzz (and knowledge) inside the stadium, compared to that at the Big A.
The Times has chased off nearly every halfway decent writer in that section, and kept all the self-important losers. They deserve to fail.

Easy folks. It's gonna be slow erosion for the Angels to take the city over completely.
However bad the Dodgers have been (and to tell the truth, they haven’t been THAT bad the last decade) it’ll take time for the Halos to truly sink in as having replaced them. Look at the progress we’ve already made. 7 years ago the Angels wouldn’t have even been mentioned in a column about the LA Dodgers. The fact that they feel there’s even a question of who’s getting more attention is such a huge step forward it boggles the mind.
And we still have all the cards. We have a great, veteran management team. We have the best owner in baseball. We have the happiest fans in baseball. We have a team with plenty of talent, much of it just now coming into it’s prime. We have an organization that values it’s former players. We’re only going to keep gaining ground. But it’s still gonna take time.

… from either ESPN the Magazine or Sports Illustraded (i forget which it was) after Fresno State won the College World Series: “Fresno State : 2009 NL West Champions”
the NL West is terrible. AAAA Baseball as far as Im concerned.

Personally, I could care less...
that we’re the second least liked team (behind Toronto); that Dodgers are the dominant team in the area; that nobody pays attention to us (a lawyer who was pitching for work today said, “oh, you’re an Angel fan. How’re they doing tthis year?” — no work for that guy — unless he gets me tickets in Wrigley for the series).
I like being in the minority and kicking ass. When I see all the fair weathered Yankee fans jumping ship, it makes me sick to my stomach.

Well done. Failure to keep up with baseball is a failed lawyer.
I have a friend who’s an Angel’s fan who asked me yesterday “Are the Angel’s going to make the post-season?” and “Are the Angel’s ranked high this year?”
I guess baseball just isn’t that important to her.
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!

Bill Dwyre Missed The Memo
His fellow Dodger fans ARE legion, but they are no longer Dwyer’s westside, middle and upper-class, entertainment types who sip their coffee black in their backyards on hazy Sunday afternoons, browsing the Calendar section, and listening to Vinny on the radio.
3.5 million of those 3.8 million stadium attendees do not buy his paper. They do not read waht passes for “scribes” in his employ. They would key his ‘98 Acura if he ever bothered to wash it. They were not alive in 1965, and cannot spell Koufax or Drysdale. They think that Lefebvre is something fixed with LeAdvil, and Osteen is something you mix with hot milk. Ferrara’s a sports car. Torborg might be a bad guy in Halo. If Kirk was not shown every night on their Jumbotron, a Gibson would come with a pearl onion. Bill’s legacy is lost on them.
They do not care that their product sucks, as long as their competition sucks even worse. It does not matter to them that they would be 16 games out of the playoffs if they had to play real baseball. It does not matter to them that they trash their own house and they are too naive to even know that their owner trashes their experience.
Yes, they are buzzed, but only on weekends. Which is when they might get lucky and snatch an extra, unused, Sunday edition of Dwyer’s paper and stuff it in the bottom of their dog cages. Those fans in attendance are a microcosm of LA Country as a whole. Isolated from each other due to age, or profession, or income, or gang affiliation, or seating, or even information source, they are not One Community. They are not One Buzz. They are The Balkans.
Dwyer is remote. He is disconnected. He is irrelevent. Not only does he not set the standard for social dialog, he does not even realize that he is not keeping up with them. In other words, he epitomizes the LA Times.

Thanks
It’s a double-entendre. I’m an old fart. So on the one hand it’s an homage to old-school baseball uni style, back in my days of the ‘60s/’70s when players wore their pants at the knee and pulled their colored socks up to showcase their “stirrups”. It’s how I identify myself as old-school.
On the other hand, it’s kinda nasty!
(In reality, I am a computer guy. I go way back. I have had an amazing career not too unlike Forrest Gump, but all in computer events!)

The reason attention is on the Dodgers right now and not the Angels
is that we don’t suck enough to have to wait until the last 2 days of the season to determine whether or not we’re mediocre enough to make the playoffs in the worst division in baseball.
You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t give a shit.

The AL West is not a cornucopia of talent.
The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.
by hauldog on Sep 24, 2008 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just by virtue of being in the AL, it's still better than the NL West.
Plus the AL West presently contains the best team in baseball, elevating the status of the other teams in the division

Agree that a lot of it has to do with the fact the Dogers have to wait until the last day(s)
but the NL West is about the same as the AL West when you throw out both team leading their respective divisions. Neither division is solid and with the Mariners in the Al West it brings down the quality of play in the division.

Considering we don't rely on 'beating up on our own division' to get to the record we have
The entire division is vastly better just by virtue of us being in it.
One division has the best team in baseball, a couple .500-ish teams, and one of the worst teams in baseball. That’s the A.L. West
The N.L. West’s TOP of the division STARTS with a couple .500-ish teams. Then it has a couple of piss-ons, and its own version of the Mariners in the Giants. Not even close.

Put it this way
Rangers went 17-26 against the AL East (.395) and 22-22 (.500) against the AL Cent
in the AL WEST they are 27-26 (.509) Thats their best win% against the AL
A’s went a lofty 17-23 against the AL East (.425) and 22-24 (..478) against the AL Cent
in the AL WEST they are 26-27 (.491) Thats their best win% against the AL
M’s went a solid 15-29 against the AL East (.341) and 15-28 (.349) against the AL Cent
in the AL WEST they are 19-33 (.365) Thats their best win% against the AL
Angels went 30-16 against the AL East (.652) and 24-17 (.585) against the AL Cent
in the AL WEST they are 33-19 (.635)
I would also say that there is 1 team above .500 in the AL West while there is 2 in the NL West above .500. Then there is a couple piss-on teams in the AL West / NL West Rangers/Rockies and Oakland/San Fran. The own version of the Mariners in the NL West is the Padres. Bottom line is the AL West is the worst Div in the AL and the NL West is the worst in the NL. Ranking them 5th and 6th in baseball.

Right. Which is still to Casey's point.
If the Dodgers played consistent, quality, ball as well as the Angels they would have resolved the issue about NL West champs weeks ago. They do not, therefore they have not.
P.S. – The AL West was 39 – 33 in Interleague play this year. The NL West was 27 – 44.

Never siad anything about the type or quality of ball the Dogers play
Just said if you look at the teams not in 1st in each division (AL/NL) the winning% are damn near the same.

The A.L. West teams all have to play the Angels a bunch of times
which has pounded a lot of their records far downward, making the division, 2nd through 4th, look even worse…the result of playing the best team in baseball 19 times each. In the N.L. West, they’re ALL mediocre, and yet none of them have to worry about playing a great team 19 times a season.
Yeah, we’re 5th and 6th, but we’re better by a significant margin I’d say. Our top 3 teams would all finish ahead of the Dodgers IMO.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 24, 2008 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But yet the other AL West teams all have winning % better against teams in the West then outside the west
that was the point of the other thread I posted. A’s, Rangers and the Mariners all have better winning% when playing against the AL West.
I would agree that the NL West is awful just not ready to say that the Angels have a tough 3 teams to beat. Odds of winning the division in the NL West have to be tougher based on the pure fact there is a total of 5 teams. Angels have to be better then just 3 other teams.

In one regard
yes, it means they have to beat 4 other teams, and we only have to beat 3…but in yet another regard, it also means they get 19 extra junker games to play against shitty opponents to pad their record with.

why write such an article?
because the Angels are making a move in the eyes of a lot of LA fans. will they take over LA’s love for the Dodgers? i don’t see it but there are a lot of people now claiming they like both teams. and now the generation is growing up in the current Halo run and seeing a quality brand of baseball.
as i have said before, i don’t HATE the dodgers. that’s a ton of baseball history there that you just have to admire. i only hate it when their fans can’t acknowledge that the Angels, born and raised in Los Angeles, are now a legit big market franchise being run like the dodgers used to be.
with all that said, it’s gonna be Cubs/Halos. :)

Angel Fans ARE in LA !!!!
I work close to downtown LA & use light rail to get to work so I see a lot of people around here & on the way TO here & beleive me, there are MANY Angel fans in LA. First, Artie was smart enough to put 6’ × 4’ “A” with a HALO logos in hundreds of bus stations around here & on large bilboards. Second, I see numerous people EVERY day sporting Angels merchandise…T-shirts, hats etc. (I REALLY don’t think they’re all wearing it because they like the color “red” !!) I think that the dodger fans “bury their heads in the sand” when it comes to admitting how many people in LA ARE Angel fans!!
