Orem's Roberto Lopez finishes the season with a .400 average
Roberto Lopez of the Orem Owlz finished the Pioneer League season with a .400 average.
The San Diego native and Pioneer League Most Valuable Player tops the statistics columns in several offensive categories, including average, hits (108), doubles (28), RBIs (72), runs (68), on-base percentage (.481) and slugging percentage (.668). He is tied for second in the league with teammate Angel Castillo and Helena's Brock Kjeldgaard with 14 home runs. Orem's Luis Jimenez leads the pack with 15.
The former USC product is a 25th-round pick in this year's draft.

He'd be easier to get hyped up about if he wasn't 22.
Lest we forget, at this same age, Howie Kendrick was hitting .370 in AAA.
Tearing up Orem is cool and all, and hitting .400 over a full minor league season is nothing to shake a stick at, but it seems pretty unfair for Tom to have held this kid back the way he did. It was very clear even half-way through the season that Lopez needed to move up a level.
Hopefully we see Lopez at Rancho or maybe even Arkansas next season.

My thoughts exactly...
what good does it do to keep this kid in Orem if he’s hitting .400? Move his ass up and challenge him a bit. This isn’t a high schooler needed to get adjusted to living away from home, etc. This is a USC kid who graduated from college and – as Zu Long stated – is 22 years old.
I wish him luck, but his hitting .400 in Orem tells us nothing about his ability level going forward. Shoot – he went from Division IA to a Junior College level of competition after the draft – he SHOULD have hit really, really well.

USC was the reason they held him back
After getting a degree from USC, he still had to learn to read so they kept him in Orem until the 3rd grade teacher approved.

so...
Should we hope for a AA, AAA split from this kid next year?

Yes. We should hope he starts out in AA and hits for similar power with a .300+ average while not letting his K/BB rates slip too badly.
If he can do that, he’s a legit top prospect and could shoot to the front of the 1B line, challenging Trumbo, Morales and whoever else for the starting 1B/DH/LF (if Tex comes back, he’ll obviously have to move) position as soon as 2010.

You guys are all cynical bastards
Be happy for the kid. Anyone know how many others have accomplished that feat at that level? I’d like to find out, but I’m too GA to look into it myself.

I'm happy for him...
but for the organization it would have been better to put him in Rancho at the start of August to see what he had at that level.
Also, I like how he’s sitting out the last game to keep that .400 average. That’s kinda silly, too.

Rancho or Cedar Rapids
Either one is a good choice for a guy coming out of college, but I guess they didn’t have very high hopes for him.
Yeah, the 22-year-oldness is a BIG issue. He needs to hustle his ass up to AA in a big hurry.

Oh, and BTW
he actually had to get a pair of hits in the last two games of the season to reach .400. On the nose.
