Good points, but there is Scioscia's penchant for cronyism that hold him back.

Hatcher, Gary Matthews Jr., Robb Quinlan, and Jeff Mathis to name a few.

by 44FAN on Sep 8, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

On the contrary, Hatcher's supposed ineffectiveness is nothing more than vicious attack rhetoric by Scioscia's

political opponents, never statistically proven or substantiated.

Gary Matthews Jr. was not a choice he made, but is a decision by others that he has been forced to live with. It is one of Scioscia’s great strengths that he sees the best in people and affords them numerous second chances as conditions allow. When push came to shove however, Scioscia made the correct decision and replaced Gary Matthews Jr. with a superior player.

Robb Quinlan is a backup player and performs that job perfectly well, whatever naysayer propaganda might like to claim.

Jeff Mathis battled it out with Napoli early on for the starting job and lost, only for Napoli to succumb to shoulder problems and fall off the table in terms of production in May. It was only at that point that Mathis assumed primary catching duties. Once Napoli finally returned healthy, he has once again been given the majority of starts. Mathis starts day games played after night games in an attempt to conserve Napoli’s unfortunately low stamina for the postseason run. Once again simply a case demonstrating Scioscia’s commitment to his principles, and his ability to make level-headed decisions.

So we see these accusations of cronyism are nothing but baseless smear attacks.

I offer up Shea Hillenbrand and Steve Finley for your consideration.

Shea got DFA'd for uselessness in May, Finley was traded after a single season.

Scioscia’s been handed some tough situations, and hasn’t always had the best people to work with to fix them. Has he complained or bellyached or pointed fingers? Hell no. Scioscia’s a consummate professional who makes do with the pieces he’s given. No wishy-washy optimism or appeals for hope. He makes due with the reality that is, not the reality he’d like to exist. He gives people the chance to fix their mistakes, and if they can’t, then he makes the tough call to let them go, while always taking the responsibility for their performance on himself.

Certainly there have been errors, decisions that are easy to second-guess after the fact. It’s impossible to be perfect, and Scioscia knows that. That’s why you have to know “how to turn the page.” Focusing on one game at a time, while always keeping the larger picture in the back of your mind. That’s the Scioscia way—the AMERICAN way.

Spoken like a modern day spokeshole. Well done.

Of course, a good reporter would ask the question:
“We all know that Scioscia has accomplished a great deal with the players he has had to work with, but most of those have been high-caliber players who delivered over the long term. In the cases of Hillenbrand and Finley, they failed to produce at all during their tenure. Most observers made mention for many, many months of non-productive playing time that these players were demonstrable failures and yet Scioscia kept playing them even after it was long overdue that they needed benching . How do you respond to that?”

Francisco Rodriguez: 201 career saves. 4 career Panthers, almost 1/2 as awesome as GMJ.

by Stirrups on Sep 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, the resemblance is definitely intentional. ^_^

My intention with this is purely comedic. As far as your question:

“Both players were veterans with previous successful records. After an admittedly dismal April, Finley initially justified Scioscia’s confidence with an excellent May, after which he fell off the table until September. It was revealed later that Finley was playing injured, a fact that Scioscia was not aware of. Hillenbrand was an emergency pickup whose playing time diminished once better options emerged, and was DFA’d in mid-June due to lackluster performance and poor attitude. It is worth pointing out that the Angels as a team won their division in both of these years, so however poor their individual contributions may have been, Scioscia was able to lead the team as a unit to victory.”

Yes, well, I walk the streets of the village and hear loud chants questioning Scioscia's leadership and judgement

not from his political opponents but from the many villagers themselves. There must be some truth to this if it is the opinion of so many. They cry, “Blackhole!” and we are doomed to lose the game when the man they have taken to call, Soth, puts up a roster with Mathis, Matthews, and Quinlan on the same day. Too often the villagers have seen their common sense predictions of failure come true.

It was only after sure threats of revolt by the villagers that Soth tossed GMJ form the roster reluctantly for Juan Rivera. This appeased the villagers, but within a fortnight, due to some injuries to other players, Soth quickly re-placed GMJ back in the roster and playing regularly. This is just slight of hand by a shrewd politician, proving Soth had no real intention of replacing him at all.

If Robb Quinlan performs his job so perfectly well, why is he the butt of relentless jokes in every corner of the village to this day? Some villagers suggest that Q is so weak, they have even entertained the idea of stealing his wife!

The villagers, depraved as they are, crave the power potential that Mike Napoli can add in the lineup. Most agree they are equally capable defensively, but even the wives and children of the hard working villagers are tired of watching Mathis’ infield pop ups for outs at bat after at bat. The only way I can explain this is it is kind of like, “It’s the economy stupid.” but in this case it is, “At least he has the ability to get a clutch hit or a homerun stupid.”

If a politician does’nt promise and deliver what the voters want, when they want it, he or she could find themselves watching the inaguration from the couch at home. Emperor Moreno heeded the endless calls for a “Big Bat” power hitter from his loyal subjects and brought the great warrior, Teixiera, to the village filling their hearts with hope for the sacred World Series Ring. The villagers have erected and impressive pedastal in the center of town, layered with gold, to place their marble statue of Emperor Moreno on, and they sit around it sipping the lower priced beer granted to them by him, tell stories of his greatness, and how someday soon, he will bestow upon upon them a long and great dynasty. Long live the Emperor!

by 44FAN on Sep 8, 2008 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think I need to respond to this, which seems mostly composed of specious exaggerations.

I will say that the fact that Scioscia’s opponents speak of Emperors during a campaign for President is representative of the degree to which they are divorced from both reality, and the American People.

Exactly.

Scioscia’s foreign policy is obvious-

“We can’t worry about things we don’t control. We just have to win our games, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Also, trade is something to pursue if we have pieces missing, but never at a deficit.

Sarah Palin, John McCain , the GOP, and the Christian Evangelical wing of the republican party

preach abstinence as the exclusive method of birth control and avoiding unwanted pregnancies. This is their policy, this is what they preach. Bristol’s pregnancy is just an example that abstinence as the exclusive prevention method does not work to prevent these unwanted pregnancies. Statistics and extensive research has proven this. This is what I think TheTypingFiend was referring to.

by 44FAN on Sep 5, 2008 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

My post said that Sarah Palin practiced what she preached....

…to the extent that she gave birth, even though she knew the baby had Down’s Syndrome. She could have gone to an abortion clinic (and then been hypocritical) but didn’t. She practiced what she preached.
I don’t know her daughter’s beliefs (and really don’t care to know…it is not my business). How do you know that it is an “unwanted” pregnancy?

by sothball on Sep 5, 2008 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe the vast majority

Of Americans in this country would choose to have their baby even if they knew he or she would have Down’s Syndrome or some similar genetic problem.

No, I don’t have stats to prove this. Call it “truthiness.” But I’m nearly positive that Palin and the Right are holding her up as this Moral Exception to some calloused, “abortion majority” that in reality just doesn’t exist.

I remember seeing polling once that indicates most Americans are morally opposed to abortion. The controversy is over whether or not that should translate into a legal ban on the practice.

One would think that Sarah Palin would have greatly preferred that her daughter had

not become pregnant at age 17 and unmarried as she was preparing to run for Vice President of the United States on a party ticket that preaches the mantra, “Abstinence Until Marriage” and champions abstinence education to both male and female youth members. Bristol’s pregnancy flies in the face of all that. So, in this case the pregnancy is probably undesirable at this time more than unwanted. Unwanted is a poor choice of words in this context because it sounds like they may be inclined to throw the baby in a dumpster the minute it is born which is not the case.

by 44FAN on Sep 5, 2008 11:26 PM PDT up reply actions

The choice of the word "unwanted" was yours, not mine.

My original post above was in response to an offhand comment about how she would “eat her young”. From what I can gather, she appears to be a polar opposite to that view (which again more closely corresponds to one that would destroy the life developing inside of them). Rather than destroy a developing human life afflicted with Down’s Syndrome, she embraced that life and it’s challenges. She also appears to have embraced her daughter’s “undesirable” pregnancy, and the child’s father. More than simply embracing life, she appears to revels in it and cherishes the great gifts that have been bestowed upon her.
That said, I sure as hell would not want to be a moose caught in her cross-hairs.

FOR THE RECORD

Palin has no stated position on birth control pills.

She is in favor of funding abstinence programs instead of sex education programs.

She is anti abortion.

Anyone who brings up her daughter has to say the following “Ken Starr is a great American who saved the integrity of the presidency” …you are either in favor of intrusive investigations about the personal lives of public servants or you are not … otherwise it is political b.s. to bring up the daughter in the age of partisan attacks on sex outside of its effect on public policy.

The use and effect of birth control pills generally falls under the heading of most responsible sex education programs.

As well as the use of condums that help prevent the transfer of sexually transmitted diseases as well as preventing pregnancy.

by 44FAN on Sep 6, 2008 12:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep

I think my eighth and tenth grade (private school, one religiously affiliated) sex-ed classes were perfectly reasonable:

1. The best way to prevent unplanned pregnancy and STDs is abstinence.
2. Here’s what might happen if you have unprotected sex.
3. Here’s how to protect yourself (condoms, contraceptives, the pill, other birth control, etc.)
4. (I think the 10th grade one included what to do if you or your partner wound up pregnant)
5. The only 100% protection against STDs and unplanned pregnancy is abstinence.

So they made sure we were well-equipped to make smart choices if we had sex, but the overall message—not doing it in the first place—came across loud and clear.

I personally lobbied and and helped lead the campaign that ultimately persuaded

the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Unified School District to distribute condoms in public high schools some eighteen years ago. The alarming increase at that time of AIDS cases and common STD’s among teens made this policy necessary and vital to saving lives. Every time I went to testify to the board I was faced with a legion of well organized Christian Evangelicals that would attempt to shout me down, call me “Devil,” and try to coerce me into a fist fight to get me arrested and thrown out of these meetings. They tried every method they could to prevent me from being successful because of their fear of teens practicing safe sex over their failed method of abstinence only. Just thought I would let you know some background of where I’m coming from, and why this issue is near and dear to me.

If you are married or have a girlriend...

ask her if she would make this kind of statement to you;
“Now honey, I know that you will be gone for only a few days, and I know you will try to be faithful. But…just in case you get the urge…here are some condoms. Be safe!”
My guess is that would not happen as she would expect you to remain faithful. If it DID happen, I think you would take that as an ever so slight indication that it is OK to “cheat”.
I am all in favor of encouraging teens to practice “safe-sex”, but if do not believe this leads to more sexual behavior, you are fooling yourself.
As far as them provoking a fist fight, that is truly disgusting behavior.

If a person is not faithful in a relationship, they will do whatever they want, regardless of the availability of contraceptives.

This is a link to a study done by the University of Washington and published in the Journal of Public health. It studied a group of 4018 sexually active adolescents divided in two groups, those that used condums on sexual debut (first time) and those that did not. The study followed this same group over a period of eight years, from 1994 – 2000.

It was found that the group who did report using condoms were half as likely to test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea than those that did not use condums. Urine samples were taken to definitively prove this.

The study also found that after 6.8 years the participants that used condoms initially, used condums at their most recent intercourse. Reported lifetime (length of study) numbers of sexual partners between the two groups did not differ.

I beg to differ.

Sarah Palin wishes to use the power and wealth of government to dictate to society at large that the only way to prevent an unwanted outcome is to follow a practice which has a demonstrable countermanding example under her very own roof.

It is perfectly reasonable to bring up the subject of Bristol Palin. Not in any context that focuses on Bristol specifically or exclusively, but certainly in the context of an important debate over public policy wherein Sarah Palin has take a very strong public stand in support of a position that is beyond her ability to effect even within the confines of her own personal experience.

How do you know its beyond her ability to affect? You would have to know whether or not her daughter made a conscious decision to get pregnant. Do you know whether or not she made this decision? Her daughter may have practiced abstinence for 2-3 years, then decided she wanted to become a mom (with/without her parents knowledge or consent). I have not read anything that confirms one way or the other.
One way or the other, the issue as not raised in the context of a public policy debate. It was raised in terms of rumor/gossip to discredit her mom.

Then you are really going to be disappointed:

As mayor, she campaigned as a “fiscal conservative” then too. But in reality she:
a) inherited a zero debt budget
b) increased spending 33%
c) increased tax revenues 38%
d) reduced progressive property taxes
e) increased regressive sales taxes (including those on food)
f) embroiled the city into financing parks instead of infrastructure, including one that has left the city involved in 7 years of litigation in a money losing public effort hat she sold to voters as a money-making venture.
g) and, after her 6 years were up, left a city of 5,000 people $22 million in debt.

She is no more about reducing government and curbing excessive spending than the fiscal “conservative in name only” that held exclusive power from 2000 to 2006. In fact, her record show her front and center of the recent federal pork distribution clearance sale.

My basic point is that she wants to fund abstinence programs. She doesn’t want to fund those programs with the money out of her OWN pocket, but from those pockets of you and me. And she, at least as well as anyone, has ample first-hand proof that any such spending program is ineffective.

Gov. Palin also proclaimed proudly she sold the official airplane on E-bay to save the taxpayers of Alaska money.

In reality, it is reported that she actually listed the airplane three times on E-bay without success, and in the end sold it through a private broker for less than the plane’s worth, which was a net loss of asset for the Alaskan taxpayers.

by 44FAN on Sep 6, 2008 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I am not sure to what statement you refer saying she "sold" the plane on E-bay.

If it was Wednesday night’s speech, you misquoted her. She said “I put it on E-bay”, not that she “Sold it on E-bay”.
Are you referring to another speech or quote? If not, what she siad in her speech was completely true and accurate.
As far as selling it for “less than it was worth”, do you think that was a better idea than maintaining an asset that was no longer in use? My guess is the maintenance, insurance, and other costs would be quite high for an asset of that size (especially in Alaskan winters).

by sothball on Sep 6, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Ever heard of an implication?

Palin and the RNC did not expect voters to say “oh she TRIED to sell something”; they want them to take away “oh, she SOLD it on E-bay, she’s awesome!!!”

Well seriously I have heard of implications.

I sure wish I had your ability to read the minds of Palin and the RNC to know what they expect voters to say. Where do you acquire ability like that?

This seems to be a really foolish attack;
1) What she said is completely true.
2) The jet was ultimately sold, though not on E-Bay (a claim she didn’t make anyway).
3) She is a VP candidate not the presidential candidate.

Don’t you believe this is obvious to most voters?

You posted above in response to the Rev saying that her daughter should be kept out of the debate.

You "begged to differ", in essence saying she is fair game due to failed abstinence only policy. To know it failed, you would need to know whether or not her daughter’s pregnancy was accidental or intentional. You did not provide or cite evidence one way or the other of the daughter’s decision-making process. If you can’t cite evidence one way or the other, it tends to;
1) Reinforce the Rev’s initial point about keeping the daughter ( and by extension other family members) out of these political discussions.
2) Undermines your credibility.
If you can’t cite any evidence, then acknowledge you made an assumption about the daughter’s state of mind that may/may not be proven correct.

What is the source of the figures from when she was mayor of Wasilla? I want to see these documents. I agree they undermine claims of being a fiscal conservative.

by sothball on Sep 6, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Google is a big help here

The financial data is reported here.

I did not say that the daughter was “fair game”, as you claim. I was very careful to add the caveat “Not in any context that focuses on Bristol specifically or exclusively”.

As for “state of mind”, we do know that the father had no intention of siring children at this time (“”http://www.nypost.com/seven/09012008/news/nationalnews/palin_admits_her_17_year_old_daughter_is_127025.htm" >I don’t want kids"). So, at least from his perspective, her pregnancy was not intentional.

But, then, neither of those are the main thrust of my point. In this issue, I am more libertarian in principal. I do not believe that it is the role of the government to sponsor and fund any effort that involves personal sexual relations or choice, no matter what the context. Palin wants to fund those programs in this issue which agree with her own moral and religious positions. I have no problem with her taking her positions. I have a problem with her taking my money to empower her ability to impose those positions on others. And I point to the example right under her nose as to why taking my money for that purpose is wasteful. And her inability to learn that lesson from her own experience is problematic.

I am not sure you realize this or not...

…all of the stats you cited are from one letter from one Anne Kilkenny. There are no other corroborating facts or citations. No one else quoted. Nothing! This is all the opinion of one person!!!
These charges may all prove to be correct, but – at this time – have zero credibility.
The “fair game” reference is maybe a matter of semantics. What I meant is that you were therefore free to cite her (not to necessarily make personal attacks).
Beyond that I prefer a government that stays out of my business. Unfortunately, we have gone a long, long way down the road to a nanny state. I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Her letter was published in a reputable news source.

Their own fact checkers should have been expected to corroporate. But, in case you doubt that, you can do your own research here.

I took a quick peek myself, and hte debt claim checks out pretty close. The Debt Administration statement of the City Annual Report just before she took office of Mayor shows zero debt, and the same report in her last year shows $20.6 million.

I can also find pre-VP selection articles that corroborate the litigation debt.

Kilkenny is probably a local gadfly. But if her data were wrong, McCain and Palin would be all over it. And yet they are silent.

I just personally corroborated one of them for you myself. I found actual city reports published by Wasilla and picked the ones that would verify her claim and found that they do!

And in my search I found another document, completely sourced, which corroborates Kilkenny’s statements of fact in her opinion piece. AND that document includes many more examples of fiscal irresponsibility.

The facts are out there. You can find them just as easily as I did from Alaskan news sources and Alaskan government sources preceding her selection and nomination, just like I did. But then, you have to want it. If you ever choose, Google will serve you too.

Your premise, though...

Your premise is that her experience is the only thing we can trust and the inference is that she has had limited experience in uncomplicated circumstances (inheriting no deficit, etc.)

The strongest argument for Palin is the character issue, that she is “real” and that the character will trump "experience because perhaps inexperience will bring new, untried solutions.

I am voting for Obama but I interject into political discourse with reminders for people to get real. Your magnification and detail-picking over Palin’s inexperience STRENGTHENS her case.

by Rev Halofan on Sep 8, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, yes, I COULD pick on her inexperience.

And, yes, that WOULD play into her hands with respect to the mindset of her populist appeal.

But in this instance, my premise was that her actual experience (as mayor) resulted in real economic damage, which was in explicit conflict with sothball’s hopes and expectations.

actually gave me some semblance of respect for McCain, especially after the 2000 primary nonsense. Maybe Jon Stewart can knock some sense back into McCain? Get him to stick to that independent edge that he always profusely professed (despite his staunchly conservative voting record).

Also, why is it that people care so much about "change"?

We saw this past 8 years what an aggressive agenda will do in Washington — stall and make your base unhappy (see Democrats since 2006) or push through trifling low-level concerns that are bipartisan affairs with no real impact on the country (see Republicans in Congress prior to 2006).

My sister, now a law student, worked in DC for four years and came to one conclusion: The best part about politics is that NOTHING GETS DONE or GETS DONE SLOWLY.

Why, you might ask? The country doesn’t need radically changing directions every election cycle simply due to the willowy demand of unhappy people in their various capacities to be unhappy. The best course is to keep change minimal and maintain status quo with the least rippling effect changes.

All in all, we’re all screwed this upcoming election. McCain is an absolutely abysmal candidate — akin to John Kerry in 2004, taking the vote for people who just hate the other guy. Obama is a wispy nothing of a man whose greatest feat in his professional career thus far has been to convince an entire base of people to vote for him on a platform based on one word: change.

I’m personally either going to throw my ballot in the toilet by voting 3rd party, or just physically throw my ballot in the toilet.

Anyone not constitutionally qualified to be President may not be in the presidential line of succession (this is what debunks those rumors you saw in January or February about how Hillary would make Bill her running mate and then resign upon being elected—not actually possible).

So theoretically Mayhem doesn’t qualify to be VP, either, or in your Cabinet. But hey, who knows in this day and age?

A fascinating read on why this entire thread is worthless.

In short, when an ideological liberal is presented with facts which refute their position, they tend to change their mind. But when an ideological conservative is presented with facts which refute their position, they believe their position even more strongly.

I always thought that I was an ideological conservative. Since I remain open-minded, clearly I fail.

There you go again Stirrups. :)

This thread is far from worthless. I agree with the studies and findings you cited in your comment, although it is the oldest news in American political discourse, so I am not all that fascinated by it. These articles cover the “what” and “when” of how conservatives and liberals decide an issue, but what I would find more fascinating is the “why” they think the way they do. That to me would be the next question and grounds for a great dicussion. I realize the “why” factor was’nt the purpose of the studies you linked to.

I would say this thread has been very anemic in political content and participation, but a political discussion on a neutral site like a sports blog has a great deal of value. The unique thing about it is the possibility of reaching the folks that identify as neutral, independent, or open minded. To have a civil and meaningful political debate between opposing sides and give a convincing common sense argument for your side has the chance of swaying their vote in your favor. It is widely reported this election will be very close and most likely decided by the independents in the middle. I avoid blogging on left wing sites because it is preaching to the choir and, as you showed above, it is a waste of time going on conservative blogs because they are so firmly entrenched in their beliefs. But if you find a site like this that allows political discussion from time to time you have a chance of making a difference by reaching some of the undecided independent folks.

Yes, the "why" is the compelling next question. But there is another.

If the study is really true, then why isn’t EVERYBODY an ideological conservative? Think about it.

Technically, this is not old news at all. You may have first-hand experience with this effect (I certainly do!), but it is a rather compelling new understanding of human behavior. One wonders if it translates to other cultures and other political systems?

And, the point about the thread being worthless was made as a joke based on irony, considering the meaning behind the data I was posting.

Francisco Rodriguez: 2006 to Present: 145 saves. 5 Panthers. As fabulous as Pride, Romero, Gregg, Budde and Dino Ebel combined.

Hey Rev. . .

Remind me again why you don’t allow political threads?

*(On a side note, I find it very interesting that people talk about Palin way more than they talk about McCain. You would think this election is Palin vs. Obama. I’m not sayin . . , I’m just sayin.)

The Palin Humor Story for yesterday

was that she slipped and proclaimed that this would be HER Administration (instead of McCain’s). So, even SHE is focusing more on herself than on McCain.
