Michael Young

The Rangers are exploring trade scenarios for short stop Michael Young as he requested a trade after learning they wanted to move his to 3rd base.

So we can see it's much like the Miguel Tejada situation back when he was with the Orioles. He would not move to another position. The upside to that trade was Tejada was younger at the time. Anyways, Michael Young is 31 years old, has a .977 career fielding percentage. He's also been to 5 straight All-Star games. He's averaged a .200 batting average, 15 home runs, 87 runs batted in, 9 stolen bases, 99 runs scored (Possibly because of the Texas offense), a .346 On base percantage, walking 47 times, and striking out 106. He'll be 32 at the end of the year, and he's a local boy from Covina.

Keeping a few things in mind,

1. The Rangers obviously want a 3rd baseman.

2. He'll be 32 at this seasons end in October.

3. He's owed approx $62M over the next 5 years ($12M per).

4. They'll probably want an arm for him.

Would you trade for him? If so, what would you give up for him?

I'd trade for him. I'd offer Jared Weaver and Matt Brown. Would that get it done???? Maybe, but I think they'll ask for more.

It's said the Angels, Dodgers, Tigers, Royals, and Mets have already inquired. Though the Rangers are in no hurry to move him.

Correction!

Over his career, he’s had a lifetime, .300 batting average.

Angel Stadium numbers

Good point about Young’s career road numbers. Here are his career stats in Angel Stadium:

291 ABs. .251/.286/.361 5 HRs.

For the sake of comparison, here are Derek Jeter’s career stats in Angel Stadium.

247 ABs. .340/.401/.518 10 HRs.

No way in a million years

Do you offer Weaver for him. Offering Matt Brown, by himself, would be too much. And I don’t think Brown is going to have that much of a major league career.

Why? The contract! Young is not worth 12 million per year. So if the Rangers were to trade him, it means THEY have to throw something else in to convince a team to take him, or else offer to pay part of the contract.

Or ALL of the contract

What is it with the Rangers and terrible contracts?

PMR ranking of MLB shortstops.

One of the more advanced defensive metrics is Probabalistic Model of Range. In 2008 for the 39 shortstops (both AL and NL) who met the criteria (at least 1000 balls in play), here are some of the rankings.

Maicer Izturis: 4th
Erick Aybar: 7th
Michael Young: 23th

Oh come on

lets do it. Lets block some more of our young guys with another Texas great, the other we all know him! GMJ woot! If the Angels do this, which they will not, then there is something wrong with management. But let Young walk that is one less guy we have to deal with on texasses team.

Give the young guns a chance...if they suck wellll...

I woke up early

specifically to post a FANSHOT insisting that nobody DARE bring up the possibility for trading for the flat, vanilla Michael Young. Woke up too late I guess, but not so early that the smart people didn’t plead my case…

Gotta love Texas' timing, though...

The guy wins the Gold Glove for SS and the first thing he hears from management is that they want to move him over to 3B.

The fact that Elvis Andrus—one of the pearls gleaned from the Braves’ farm system in exchange for Texieira in 2007—is considered MLB ready should put the Angels on notice. He is better offensively and rougher defensively than Aybar, but he’ll continue to improve. That the Rangers will ask their Gold Glove-winning SS to move over and make room for a rookie speaks volumes about what the Rangers think of Andrus.

by George Kaplan on Jan 12, 2009 9:41 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep

It has taken the honor from Todd Helton, because he only has a couple (three?) years to go.

If it were not for this horrible contract, Texas might actually compete with us over the next few years. It’s so funny that right after they got out from deal they could not afford at SS, they jumped right into a new one.

The Texas GM is kind of darkly laughing at his trade request. He knows there is nothing out there that does not involve Texas paying half the contract.

Buster Olney needs to be introduced to yet a different ex-Ranger...

…if he wants to measure bad contracts. I think we got that one nailed.

16 a year for 5 years starting this year?

GMJ’s is not that bad.

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

by hauldog on Jan 12, 2009 2:44 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed

at least matthews accepts when he gets benched or sent to the corner outfield. Young is REFUSING to leave his spot at SS even though hes a butcher

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 12, 2009 3:57 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ha!

yeah, that one’s pretty bad.

Kotch would've had that.

Let's let Ted Stevens do the talking

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxGKUujCBJs

But in all seriousness, I suppose you at least have to consider these things when they come up. Then you have to realize exactly what it would do or not do for the organization, and how the organization would probably be screwed by such a trade, and then dismiss it properly. So that’s that, then.

Its actually in the Angels' best interest to KEEP young on the Rangers

and force them to eat that money every year on a player that will be pretty much unplayable in 3 years. Not only does he block a position for Andrus and Davis(if they get another 1B), but he hurts their payroll flexibility.

Taking that buden off their shoulders would basically signal that Tony and Arte own a stake of the Texas Rangers

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 12, 2009 10:21 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A terrible idea. A terrible contract. He is 32

If he won’t play 3rd for the Rangers why would he play 3rd for us.

He is a downright awful shortstop.

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

No thanks to Michael Young

especially considering that Texas would charge us an AL West rival tax.

Funny thing...

I posted that this morning, and thought to myself, “Wow, Michael Young is available.” And previous to reading everyones comments on here, I began to have my doubts that he’d be worth what I offered… in that of Weaver and Brown. Looking over his numbers, I can’t help but think I was wrong. He’s been productive throughout his career but something tells me to stay away. His contract? His numbers in Anaheim? The fact that we already took a former Ranger and look how well that worked out for us?

So, in the end. You all are right. I am wrong. You are smart. I am not. You are all really good looking…. I am… not.

Truth be told, I’d take Josh Hamilton for John Lackey, today. While we’d still have time to sign a FA arm like Lowe or Sheets.

by matt92130 on Jan 13, 2009 12:42 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd like Josh Hamilton

Much better than Jermaine Dye.

Not for Lackey, though. Lackey is the cornerstone of the rotation right now, and to just boot him off to Texas would be insane. That, and Tejas would never get rid of Josh Hamilton, posterboy for the timeless redemption story.

Heck, why not let Texas trade Michael Young to some other sucker, then give them Figgins and a prospect for….? Then the Halos could be the magnanimous bestower of Texas’ long-awaited third baseman—and could demand a hefty price in return!

WTF?!?
Truth be told, I’d take Josh Hamilton for John Lackey, today.

Do you think Jon Daniels is the ultimate rube?

Hamilton is not just the Rangers’ PR department’s wet dream, he isn’t even eligible for arbitration at this point. Why on earth would Daniels trade Hamilton for the walk year of Lackey, assuming John is keen to return to the swelter of Arlington after many years of cooler CA nights and would consider a long-term deal?

We don’t even need to get involved with the OF logjam created by long-term deals for JR, Hunter and GMJ, along with the need to keep Vlad in the mix…

by George Kaplan on Jan 13, 2009 7:27 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually

MIchael Young (with horrible contract) and Josh Hamilton for Figgins, Willits, Moseley and Adenhart would be a fair deal – they get two arms and salary relief.

was that a joke

ya, im sure texas is going to trade their MVP calibur middle of the order bat who has become one of the most compelling figures in American sports for 1 year of John Lackey.

WHY STOP THERE?! Psh, if you ask me I’d trade Jose Arredondo for Alex Rodriguez in a SECOND

Is it just me or are sillier and sillier posts being made every day?.

Whoa easy fellas

Just saying there’s one guy on the Rangers I trade for… Josh Hamilton. And I’d trade Lackey for him. Never said it was reported, or did I mean to insinuate it was a possibility. Just… throwing shit out there at 3:42am EST. My mind wanders at times… so should yours.

Interesting perspective on Young

…from parallel-universe Texas blog Lone Star Ball.

Money quote:

This is just one more chapter in the embarrassing history of this organization. And as I said at the beginning, there’s no way for this to be resolved without besmirching everyone involved. The organization looks bad. Michael Young looks bad.

And really, management looks even more incompetent for handing out that huge contract extension before the 2007 season. It was widely criticized for being too much for a guy who simply wasn’t that good, but was justified from a p.r./marketing/soft factor standpoint. But if you are going to give out a huge contract because you don’t want to take the p.r. hit that would result from letting the guy go, if you are going to make him the Face of the Franchise and the center of what you are trying to do…

You can’t do that and then, less than two years later, before the contract has even kicked in, decide you made a huge mistake and try to dump him on whomever will take him, even if it means picking up a good chunk of his contract. That is, quite simply, utter incompetence, and it makes you wonder what happened, what the thought process was, that went from thinking 5 years, $80 million being a good idea in early 2007, to thinking it is a totally unpalatable, unmitigated disaster that is going to require subsidizing to get off the books less than two years later, the baseball equivalent of mortgage backed securities.

by George Kaplan on Jan 13, 2009 12:32 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hindsight is a bitch.

At the time, the thinking was probably that locking down a 25HR, 100 RBI, .330 hitting SS who is a perennial MVP candidate, and doing this for $16mill a season, will look like a fair price come 2012. That is not an awful call.

Of course, Young immediately tanked thereafter. They tossed the dice, and them dice came up craps. It happens to everybody.

So now, which is the real ballplayer? The one from 2004/2005/2006? Or the one from 2007/2008? Texas is clearly hoping to con some other team into believing that he is the former, because they are themselves now are convinced that he is the latter.

by Stirrups on Jan 13, 2009 12:50 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

One GM said he doubt Young would get dealt if they gave him away for free.

Also not moving to help his team is bullshit. He is a selfish prick.

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

Reminds me of:

Miguel Tejada. Ahh yes, Miggy. I’m glad he’s in Houston and not going to playoffs since 2003.
