Top 100 Angels: Gary PETTIS #45
Gary's 2005 Top 100 Angels Profile
One can begin to get defensive (no pun intended) about the favorite players from their childhood when those old heroes are suddenly not making the top of the list with even the most plausible of arguments. I guess it is called growing up.
So here is the great Gary Pettis and he is #45 on the All-Time List after 48 seasons of Angels baseball. I think back to Gary Petttis leaping up the Centerfield wall and retrieving those homerun balls and I thought he was doing it for me and didn't you think he was doing it for you?

I agree.
I thought Pettis was the greatest player of all time (while I was growing up). I have a lot of Gary’s baseball cards because I was sure he was a hall of famer.

45 seems a bit high to me.
For all the greatness he possessd as a CF for the Halos, lest us not forget his ineptness at the plate (Top 10 in strikeouts 3 years in a row). He was also good for a few hamy pulls, and only played more than 140 games twice.
His K’s (esp. with runners in scoring position broke many a heart, many a time). With the exception of 1986, he struck out more times tahn he got a hit One redeeming quality though was that he stroked the very first foul ball that I ever caught (in 1984) against the team he would eventually be traded to.
By moving Pettis, we created room for a better CF (in my opinion anyway), in the uppercut-swing happy Devo White.
It is way overdue Arte. #5 needs to be retired by the Angels.
