LAST THOUGHTS ON 2008
2008 was a great, special season in Angels Baseball. The downbeat ending did not allow us all to revel in the marvelous six months that led to a hundred wins. THIS THREAD is your chance... post your favorite memories here.

my favorite memory of 08.......
was Nappy-do going off in game 3 of the ALDS and ending the red sox consecutive win streak……of course he only delayed the misery of losing the series…..but it was an outstanding performance

Torii Hunter walk-off Grand Slam...
dozens and dozens of fans exited the stadium around me in my seats in F107. I never leave early due to childhood trauma of missing Don Baylor hitting a homerun as my Dad (eager to beat the traffic) drove down the 5 freeway away from the stadium (this sort of thing happened to me several times as a kid).
It was one of those games that I had pretty much chalked up as a loss and was stunned to see my team come out on top in spite of such little hope remaining.

does anyone have
a picture of him hitting that GS ball. Like the bat flip after? I have been looking for one forever, but i cant find it.

The more commonly viewed image is Torii airborne getting ready to touch home.

Even though we lost when it really mattered, I enjoyed
beating the Red Sux 8 times during the regular season and at least once during the post season.
Also, Torii taking no mess from Pudge and Johnny Rivers playing seconed were fun.

I second that moment
as my favorite. I was sitting on my bed listening to it on the radio via internet actually hoping that someone would hit it to him even though it could have resulted in a ball between the legs.

watched with my mariners friend
i was sure it was gone off the bat, because sexson had homered twice in that game already (and Rex’s reaction), if i remember correctly. it went from absolute horror to sheer jubilation in like four seconds.

i liked
— the Torii grand slam
— Torii robbing homers (epsecially against the M’s)
— Nappy breaking out (especially in Game 3 of the DS)
— Woody hitting what should’ve been a game-winning homer in Chicago off of Jenks
— Vlad launching a homer in Texas, then Torii coming up and rocketing one into the 3rd deck
— Mark Teixeira
— 1866baseball.com
— the Motivational Poster thread here on HH
— Lackey’s near no-hitter
— “GA’s lazy” jokes
and on a baseball, though non-Angels related side note:
— Josh Hamilton’s Home Run Derby…. that was amazing.
Kotch would've had that.

against the dodgers too
blame it on mathis. but this is a happy thread. so i will say only positive things. Remember that Cleveland day game on july 23rd where the angels won like 14 to 11 and Mathis hit a go ahead gram slam and kotch went 5 for 5. that was cool.

Torii Hunter's heroics
Definitely would have to go with Torii Hunter’s walk off Grand Slam… Just cemented the signing of the CF. I’d also have to say Sexson’s home run he robbed to end the game. And the monster home run Vlad hit in Texas. I was there in the stadium and even the Rangers fans were blown away. I didn’t even have time to take my seat again before Torii did damage.

the last hurrah
7/28- Kotch hits his last homerun as an Angel to start the 6 run 6th that gives us the lead for good to start this streak.
7/29-Big Thunder flirts with the no-no against the nuvo evil empire.
7/30-Caddilac going deep for the second night in a row, 4fer5-4RBI, compleating the sweepin bean-town for the Halos.
7/31-Mr. Anderson goes 4fer5 for the second game in a row, helping Judy G. collect his 10th win of the season.
8/1-Voodoo scatters 5 hits in 8 innings to claim his 12th win of the season.

Nap hits the walk-off blast to beat the M’s. Memorable because I was listening on the radio, and was passing the Big A as it happened. Seeing the fireworks from the 57 reminded me why I’m an Angel fan.
Also, I made a bet with my step-dad at the end of May that Vlad would reach .300 and 25 jacks again. He thought I was nuts. It was the sweetest $5 I’ve ever won.

Frankie's 58th
That’s the only one of these moments I actually saw in person… Got tickets for that game just because I had a feeling it was going to happen that night.
My seats were right by the bullpen that night. I yelled my head off when that weird-ass “you think I am horse mackerel, I am toad of the month” song came on.

**********HOMERUN! ***************Mike Napoli******************
My favorite games are the high scoring ones like the long Friday, Sept. 19 game against the Rangers. The Angels won that night 15-13. Arredondo pitched two innings of scoreless relief. Napoli hit one single short of the cycle, caught the whole game, and was player of the game on TV, and panther of the game on HH after we had posted 1300 comments in the multiple game threads. It was a great, full evening of baseball, with the Rangers having to eat it in the end.

1a. I was at the game in Yankee Stadium on 8/31 when Voodoo pitched an absolute gem (win – 1-0). When Tori hit the GWRBI against the great Mariano in the 9th I was ecstatic (I also was on TV — a plus)
1b. I was at the game on 9/18 in Arlington and watching that slugfest was great (win – 15-13)! (plus my brother turned off the TV when the Rangers scored 9 runs in the 3rd…never NEVER leave early)
1c. I was at the game on 6/22 in Philly with Kingfish (Brett) and watched the Halos complete a sweep (win – 3-2). We beat Hamels and Casey hit a two run jack about thirty feet to our right and about twenty feet up (as a bonus GMJ got an RBI with GMS in the box doing color for the home team).

Reggie scores from 2nd on a grounder to SS. A's collapse begins.
At the start of play on July 13th (the last game before the All-Star break) the A’s were just 5 games back of the Angels. If you recall in June and early July, there were plenty of screaming pythagots proclaiming that the A’s were in fact the more talented team due to a better run differential than the Angels.
Here was a great chance for Oakland to close the gap to 4 games. They held a 3-2 lead going to the top of the 9th. A’s closer Huston Street came in to protect the lead but gave up singles to Hunter and Rivera to put runners on 1st and 3rd. HK tied the game with a sac fly while Budde bunted over pinch-runner Reggie Willits to 2nd. So with two outs Aybar hit a chopper to short and beat the throw to first. But on the play REGGIE WILLITS SCORED ALL THE WAY FROM 2nd and the Angels led 4-3.
Frankie comes in to pitch the 9th. Of course he just HAS to create a situation that gave me major diarrhea. Following a single, a walk, a bunt, and an intentional walk, the A’s have the bases loaded with just one out. I was pacing back and forth in front of my TV, running out of expletives, and was sure that Frankie would blow it. The A’s were poised to at least tie the game and probably win it. But Frankie being Frankie, strikes out Bowen looking and Suzuki swinging. ANGELS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I let out a primal scream. My neighbors called the police (I kid, I kid).
Hilarity ensues. On July 11th (as per coolstandings ) the A’s chance of winning the AL West stood at 47 percent. On August 1st their odds had spiraled down to a mere 1.1 percent.
On July 11th the A’s had a win total of 51 wins
Almost one month later on August 7th the A’s had all of 53 wins
A TOTAL COLLAPSE BY THE A’S!
Thanks Reggie!
