MLB Angels Hot Stove Report
On MLB.com, a video Hot Stove Report on the Halos has been posted with a nifty little article written by Lyle Spencer to boot. The entire report focuses on our Fuentes and our bullpen. There isn't much here that we havent already discussed over and over here on HH. However, most of the commentary on the report seems to be chock full of good vibes which can never be a bad thing.
The video can be found on the homepage of the MLB while Spencer's article can be found HERE. In addition, an article on Juan Rivera posted on the 29th (also by Spencer and also with good vibes) can be found HERE.
Now go do your off-season obligatory online reading like a good Halo fan.

“Obviously, this strengthens our bullpen in a very significant way,” Reagins said. “Brian joining Jose, Scot Shields, [Justin] Speier and [Darren] Oliver should give us a good opportunity to close games.”
keyword there being Speier. Ninja obviously still has faith in him

I agree
Last year may well have been a fluke, but if 2009 is 2008 redux, DFA-time…

I dont think speier is done. hes had alot of solid work to just be labeled crap in one season.

Yeah, career ERA+ is fantastic
Specifically: 117. As everyone knows, 100 is average.
In 2008, Speier was at 88. Pretty sucky.
But consider that for the previous three seasons, Speier was at:
2005: 173 (WOW!)
2006: 153
2007 (first year with the Halos, for those following at home and only looking through the 2008 prism): 158
So yeah. I’m pretty sure 2008 was a fluke—I’d be truly surprised if one year of a seventy point drop-off in ERA+ is truly indicative of his career being over.

Amen
Either Speier has suffered a complete career/physical meltdown, or 2008 was an aberration. I assume for now it is the latter.
I stick by my guess that he regains form and is flipped during the season for a puzzle piece.

our bullpen is stacked
if we need to make a deal by the deadline, im almost certain we’ll be involving some relievers
Maybe
I’m more inclined to think some players will drop off considerably, leaving the Halos with a thinner ’pen. Who knows?

are you perhaps thinking about looking into the Chad Cordero situation
no compensation, cheapish and a local boy. Imagine Fuentes-Shields-Dondo-Cordero-Oliver-Jepsen-Speier not to mention Bulger/Thompson/Loux/Moseley. Thats pretty sweet

I forgot about Cordero
Has anyone heard how his workout went?
Screw Pythagoras, with this staff and pen I can see the Angels winning a lot of 3-1, 4-2 games.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
Thats what we did last year....
We won a 100 games but damn alot of them were close.
