Manny considering Giants

ManRam is in talks with the Giants. I don't know if this really will happen but if it did could the Giants be next years contenders? They just got Randy Johnson and they do have a pretty deep bulpen. Could we see a rematch this October of the Wild Card World Series?

There is also talks about GA moving north, with a possible trade to the A's as well. I am going to miss ole cycolps. It's sad that his career is not ending with the Halos, and it will be interesting to see how we do without him.

GA cant get traded if he's a free agent,

and theres no link that says manny is talking to the giants. Hes staying with the dodgers and nothings changed in the past 3 months

Where did you hear this??

In any case, I don’t buy that Manny and Randy Johnson make the Giants a contender (certainly not World Series material). They were pretty god awful last year.

Totally agree with ihearhowie, which shows maybe you have pulled all of this out of …

this is along standing rumor

started by boras to get the dodgers to budge in their negotiations.

Don't complain about not getting Manny

Taking Reagins at his word, the Halos are not interested in Manny. Therefore, instead of Manny we have Juan Rivera.

A likely Hall-of-famer for a jouneyman outfielder.

Sounds like a great choice.

Not.

remind us of this

when manny sabotages his team in a tantrum later this season while juan just shows up and does his job well.

OK

Yes, Manny is prone to tantrums. However, I don’t think he exactly “sabotaged” Boston last year. Manny screwed up, was disciplined, and ultimately got sent out of town. He’s still paying the price for last year’s tantrum given that he’s not going to get the 4 year $100m plus deal he was seeking. Who knows – he might even have learned something from the experience. However, to suggest that he “sabotaged” the Boston team or their season is a bit of a stretch. Boston was not sabotaged by Manny to the degree that they could not make the play-offs and oh-by-the-way beat the Halos to make it to the AL Championship series. They had a very good season until their pitching just fell apart. But candidly, I don’t give a crap about Boston – I care about the Angels doing everything possible to win another Championship.

Here’s the point: Boston won a lot of games with Manny over the years, in fact he made significant contributions to their division and World Series championships. A reasonable case can be made that Manny carried the Dodgers to the playoffs last year. At 36 years old he remains one of the most feared and best hitters in all of baseball. Juan is a nice role player, and an even better teammate. But seriously, aren’t the games played to win? Will the fans be raving about how nice, friendly and calm the clubhouse is if the team is not successful?

im so over the manny crap

the angels have a plan thats in the best interest of the franchise moving forward. Its their money and livelihood, so you should trust their judgement. Be happy we have management that wants to build long term, not just sell their souls for 1 year.

Also, im surprised that coming off the mark teixeira-guaranteed world series experiment that people are still convinced that 1 player is the answer. Manny is a great hitter, but maybe the owner and general manager are more interested in building a team that can compete with the A’s and Rangers beyond 2009 when they’ll be awesome.

Id rather be slightly worse off in 2009 for the sake of being competitive long term than the “prohibitive favorite” and “great on paper”

How’d that work for the Tigers last year? Who did Tampa and Philly sign to $25 million deals last year?

Manny wont be much help when he’s 40 and the rest of our division is 25.

Yeah Mannys really mad about how hes gaining money

instead of a 2 year 40 million contract that the sux would have picked up, he now gets somewhere around 3-70 or so

Lets go angels

Manny

Like Rev says, this rumor has been going on for weeks. Who knows.

Yes, Johnson and Manny could make the Giants the favorite in the NL west. Or at least close to it.

Like you, I wish GA well. I’m just now starting to get over it. I think. Maybe. Or not.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Really?

If Manny signs with the Giants, who protects him in the lineup?

Bengie Molina? Rich Aurelia?

Who’s on base for Manny to drive in?

Aaron Rowand? Edgar Renteria?

This scenario makes very little sense. The offensive woes of the Giants won’t be solved by paying Manny $20+M a year for several seasons. He would be the only hitter in a lineup which has the pitcher hit 9th. The Giants would be wasting their money.

One hitter makes a franchise

Who protected Barry Bonds in the lineup all those years? Jeff Kent?

by BBFan1 on Feb 1, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

The guy averaged 30 HR a season for the six years he played with Bonds, mostly hitting behind him. That makes him a credible threat to change the game if the pitcher puts Bonds on base.

And Matt Williams would be crushed to know you forgot about him so easily. Same with Ellis Burks, who hit 55 HR in his two full seasons with the Giants, hitting behind Bonds.

Are you seriously trying to convince anyone that Bengie Molina belongs among those names? .292/.322/.445 with 16 HR in 2008? Yup, nobody would date put Manny on base with that beast on deck.

by George Kaplan on Feb 1, 2009 6:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't matter

The division will be sooo weak if the dodgers don’t get manny, it gives them just as good a chance as the rest.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

As long as this douch is not corrupting us...

F**k Manny and his antics! Focus on re-signing Lackey and cutting ties with Matthews Jr after this season!

Like Pat Benatar sang,“WE ARE YOUNG”! So… Sign Dunn (OF,1B) in order to provide a much needed proven, power/run producer to carry us before the All Star break. My biggest worry going into this season is producing runs early on in the season while with standing the growing pains of our younger talent.
To me Adam Dunn is the proven left handed run producer the Halos lineup has been waiting for!
He is the perfect player to provide the power as we transition out of the Vladdy era!

The Giants should go after 2 less expensive quality bats

then throwing all of their $$ at Manny.

They could go out there and get 2 guys for less than what Manny would cost.

I really like what the Giants are doing; their staff is pretty good from top to bottom, from the rotation to the bullpen. They’re trying to build the everday lineup through a combo of in house youth and cherry picking certain FA’s, and they seem to be on the right track and the worst is probably over.

But why put all of your money into just Manny? Also, the team is really in rebuilding mode, and perhaps they dont wanna commit to an older player for that long, as they’ll lose any financial flexibility whatsoever.

If Adam Dunn actually wanted to play first base they should go after him. But they desperately need power in their offense, because they have almost none right now. There are still several decent run producers out there, and it seems like the Giants could reach out to a couple if they so desired.

To me, they need to make offensive adjustments, because if they’re not in the Manny swepstakes and the Dodgers end up with him, the Giants look sadly overmatched offensively against the Blue, and they will be relying solely on their staff to keep them in a divisional race.

Buzzie Bavasi?

Is that you?

(also, is there a new rule in the offseason allowing for us to play 2 LF’s or 2DH’s?)

Lame Arte

Sign him.

I guess I already used my Manny bomb for the month?

by hauldog on Feb 1, 2009 10:31 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

He'll end up with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are the 1 big market team left that still has a shitload of payroll flexibility and Ned knows that if he lets Manny sign with the Giants, the crazy Doyer fans will burn an effogy of him and possibly even kill him.

Manny says no to Dodgers

For those of you who think Manny can be had for a short-term deal, TJ Simers of the Times reported Boras was offered a $25M/1 yr deal for Manny, who turned it down.

As has been said here so many times, Manny turned down two club options (for 2009 and 2010) of $20M each when he voided his deal with Boston, so any offer (A) less than two years, and (B) less than $20M per season is going to be unacceptable. I am sure his ego will miss the game, but if he never plays again his family won’t starve, so he is under no obligation to take a deal simply because it is the only one on the table, or less than what he wants.

“his family won’t starve”

Ahh, the good old Latrell Sprewell stance … “3 years – $21 million — c’mon, I’ve got a family to feed.” Then, he never plays again. What a genius.

Latrell was a choke artist

Just ask PJ Carlissimo.

Latrell has a thriving auto parts business, though.
