First and DH ............ An Idea !!!
Please bear with me and just think about the idea and then respond . Since it doesn't look like we are going to sign a bat to protect Vlad, he will be free swinging at everything just trying to carry us as has happened in the past. Why couldn't we give a minor league contract and an invite to Richie Sexson for Spring Training. What is the worst that could happen ........................ we release him before opening day, no loss whatsoever. What if he performs like he use to .......................... you never know then you would have made an excellent decision having a D.H. and/or first baseman. Remember Kendry could give Guerrero a day off in the field. If you really think about it there is no liability or chance in this equasion, he has the spring to prove whether he can still perform. Their isn't anyone who could say he is done because no one knows for sure, if there is some fuel left in the tank the power numbers would be more than welcome. Absolutely no risk with this idea !!

He bats right-handed
The Angels don’t need any more right-handed hitters (if you can call Sexson a "hitter").
I was uncool before uncool was cool.

to solve the DH problem
Figgins gets traded for a starter, Wood takes over 3B. Izturis is your SS. Rivera is in LF, Vlad in RF, and Napoli is your starting DH. That means Mendoza Mathis is the catcher… as much as I hate it, everyone is satisfied. When Vlad needs to DH, Napoli goes to C, and GMJ goes to RF.
2009 starting lineup:
Izturis SS
Kendrick 2B
Guerrero RF
Hunter CF
Napoli DH
Rivera LF
Morales 1B
Wood 3B
Mathis C
the 8 and 9 hole have the potential to make us cry (mostly the 9 hole), but if Reagins is really wanting to give the kids a shot, this may be the best way to do it.
Kotch would've had that.

Napoli isn't that bad of a defensive catcher.
Keep the DH open for Vladdy and his ailing knees.

i solved that in the post too
and i know Nappy’s not a bad catcher. i really dislike Mathis…. i just think that might be a good scenario for us.
Kotch would've had that.

This doesn't solve anything
because Mathis is worse than Figgins at the plate. With your scenario, then we’ve got a really weak 8 and 9, and so many other unproven spots (Izturis, Rivera, Kendrick, and Napoli still need to prove they can play a full season, and Morales has everything to prove).
See Suboptimal’s suggestion under “Adam Dunn and the #’s” for sharing the DH role and corner OF slots and giving Wood a try at 3B. That scenario is the best we can do. Last year, Figgins wasn’t as good as he has been in the past, but he’ll still do a heck of a lot more than Mathis.
We’ve got to start the season:
Figgins LF/RF
Izturis SS
Guerrero RF/DH
Hunter CF
Rivera LF/DH
Napoli C
Kendrick 2B
Morales 1B
Wood 3B
Of course, any guy who steps it up can be moved around. If Kendrick’s OBP gets upwards around .370 – .380, move him to #2. Someone else could possibly become a more ideal #4 than Hunter, especially Nap (or Wood, teehee).
Don't mess with Teix-ass or Bor-ass!

His arm is AWFUL
Napoli has one of the worst ratings in the entire majors for throwing out base runners taking second.
Mike turns every team he catches against into a speed team.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

for (hopefully) the last time
Napoli was effing injured last year. get off it.
Kotch would've had that.

He has had shoulder surgery already, while in the minors. Hasn't he?
This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

His arm was awful before he got injured
the man-crush on the long ball in understandable but do not try and convince someone who watched every game last year that Napoli’s defense is anywhere close to Mathis’.
Mathis arm is better, even with those throwing errors. His range is better. His game calling is better.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

clearly his arm is better
his throws go straight to center field! that’s power, baby!
Kotch would've had that.

Mathis is good at picking off that guy stealing center too
oh wait you cant steal center

Kotch would've had that.

I'd rather have...
Izturis as our 3B and Wood as our SS. I’d also rather have Napoli start at Catcher and use Guerrero on the DH. Then play Willits/GMJ at RF.

A 200 hitter to protect Vlad? No thanks.

Thinking, thinking, thinking...
…and rejecting.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

There is a risk involved...
…Scioscia starts him even if he sucks.
No, thank, you.
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
by 101halo on Jan 5, 2009 11:21 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
This.
If Scioscia uses him ONLY against lefties, and he hits marginally well (lets say OPS of over 850?) then no big deal, if he sucks, let him go. I’m just afraid that Scioscia will show his genius again by using Sexson much like he used Quinlan in years past, even though he sucks, which would obviously hurt the team. Remember Shea Hillenbrand? Steve Finley? Edgardo Alfonzo? (oh god)

i think Giambi would be a better "last resort" guy to bring in
but with the As and Rays interested, his price wouldnt bottom out like wed probably need it to for him to be worth it

Just A's now
Should be able to get him for a similar deal Burrell get, if not even a one-year deal.

What's the "worst that could happen?"
"…he has a 2 seam ‘heavy’ fastball that has sink but he does not throw a ‘sinker’." Angel Aviator on Jake Peavy.

The worst that can happen
The Mariners win the division, getting bragging rights.
They then beat the New Evil Empire from Mass. in the first round, causing 90% of HH to contemplate suicide.

I'd hate seeing the M's win the division, but if I have to choose between an AL West team and the bostonfucks, I choose the AL West team.
by snowhor on Jan 5, 2009 12:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Amen! I’d gladly root for the M’s or the A’s over the Red Sox.

Richie Sexson has proven that he is EXACTLY the guy you want coming to the plate in a clutch situation.
When your team is on defense.
by Stirrups on Jan 5, 2009 2:44 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
isn't Shea Hillenbrand available...
we should sign him after we ink Sexson. Then we could make a play for Jose Guillen. Could we lure Eric Davis out of retirement?
Tex is a Yank...now our counter move is what?
by hk47 on Jan 5, 2009 3:27 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I still think Giambi could do exactly what the OP is describing
And his name isnt Richie Sexson. And we can take him from the A’s…thats always great.

I dont mean give a minor league/spring training invite to
I mean the DH/first role
by linkbruin on Jan 5, 2009 3:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Just a spring training invitation???
No harm, no foul. Offer it.
by matt92130 on Jan 6, 2009 9:33 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I gotta pay to go there, so should Sexson, who should be watching the game, not playing it.
by Downing Rules on Jan 7, 2009 5:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Haha
I’m assuming you think you could do better???? Haha.
He’s had two injury riddled seasons. The guy has averaged 36HR per year over his career and you don’t think that warrants a zero risk spring training invitation? You’re high.
by matt92130 on Jan 7, 2009 11:19 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
sign you up as the special assistant to Tony Reagins. Sexson isn’t going to SNIFF 15 HR’s this coming season.
