Re-thinking Burrell and Abreu

I understand that Burrell and Abreu are 2nd tier hitters and that our outfield is overcrowded. I understand that they both play bad defense and I understand that Burrell is just another right handed bat and that our lineup is right handed. For these reasons, I have generally have said I would not want these guys on the Halos.

However, according to MLBtraderumors, Pat the Bat is close to signing with the Rays for just 2 years and 16 million. That is a bit of a shock to me that the Rays can land a guy like him for so cheap. That's less than what we gave Fuentes and what Cleveland gave Kerry Wood! I agree that Burrell is not the best fit for this team but at that price, wouldn't he be worth taking a look at? And if Burrell does sign for that amount, that means Abreu might have to settle for even less than that and he would be a better fit to our lineup since he is left handed and would give balance. If he is cheaper than 2 years and 16 million, I think it's worth reconsidering adding another outfield bat.

this makes me more pissed about not going after Dunn

he’s a lefty masher with a really good OBP, and now guys like him are going dirt cheap!!

what’s the downside here???

Kotch would've had that.

Burrell just signed a 2 year deal with the Rays

Nice pick up for them, IMO. They needed an OF/DH and he’ll fit nicely in that lineup

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 11:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

haha forgot to make my point

which was that it might be the years more than the money. Signing Abreu for Dunn for 2 years blocks Brandon Wood pretty much for another year. Realistically, Wood is the guy we NEED to develop for the future.

I think we’ll get a bat, and I think it will cost Figgins for us to get it.

We could sign Dunn I suppose and then trade Figgins, but either way I really think we need Wood playing everyday or else we’re SCREWED after 2009. We need a foundation for the future and right now we dont have that offensively.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 11:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wood wouldn't necessarily be blocked.

Morales 1B
Kendrick 2B
Wood SS
Figgy 3B
Napoli C
Hunter CF
Vlad RF/DH
Rivera LF/RF/DH
Burrell/Dunn/Abreu LF/RF/DH

It just would mean both Izturis and Aybar would ride the bench and one of them would probably have to be traded. Or you could trade Figgins, put Wood at 3B and Aybar or Izzy at SS.

by Chzburger Jones on Jan 5, 2009 11:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

signing Dunn doesn't block Wood

letting Figgins play does.

as soon as Figgy is let go, Wood will start. I think management views Wood as more of a 3B than a SS because we’re a little bit thinner there.

You sign Dunn to play DH/LF, trade Figgy for an arm, and put Wood at 3B.

When Vlad DHs, Dunn goes to LF, Rivera to RF.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Jan 5, 2009 11:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree the Figgins is creating some logjams

but the only problem I have with trading him is that we don’t have a legit lead off guy to replace him. And don’t suggest Reggie Willits or I will punch you in the balls.

by Chzburger Jones on Jan 5, 2009 12:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

oh come on

i’m not THAT stupid…. GMJ would lead off. :P

but seriously, Izzy would do just fine in that role.

Kotch would've had that.

I suggest....

Reggie Willits.

Punch away sir.

It makes a tough situation

because If Figgins is gone, we dont have a leadoff hitter. Aybar or Izturis could theoretically leadoff, but thats not really ideal in terms of getting on base.

If figgins is dealt and Dunn or Abreu was signed, it would mark a major departure from Scoscia’s philosophy.

An OF of River/Dunn/Vlad, albeit with Torii, would be pretty gross defensively and with Wood and Dunn instead of Wood & Figgins or Figgins & Dunn….we would be missing a spark plug that we sometimes need late in games to get a hit, steal a base, and have the speed to score.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 12:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

or

that spark comes via an extra base hit like, God forbid, a home run.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Jan 5, 2009 12:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i just cant help but think we'd all be disappointed with Dunn

keep in mind we watch the games, we dont just look at the stat sheet. Dont you think if Dunn was such a major impact player that he’d be more hotly pursued by everyone? Or that Cincy would be trying to get him back on the cheap right now? They seem more than OK with letting him go.

The guy has a good OBP and hits 40 home runs and is gonna take a massive paycut. That is what I would like to call too good to be true. SOMETHINGs there we’re not seeing. The last thing I read about Dunn was that he can be pitched to more than any other power guy in the league.

We can win this year without Dunn or Abreu and we will be better in 2010 because we resisted these guys. Acting so short sighted is what can lead to panic situations like we’re in now. Sometimes going after the “big name” players isnt what sustains long term success and we’re really teetering on being downright mediocre in the future if we dont let our offensive prospects develop

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

mine was more of a comment on the organization's train of thought

than Dunn himself. sorry you had to be at the front of it. :P

i don’t think Dunn (or any FA, for that matter) will make or break our 2009 season; i really don’t. I do, however, think that Dunn would be a great addition to our team and good protection for Vlad. It’s not everyday you can get a 40 HR 100 BB guy for under $10MM/yr (if Burrell’s price is the standard).

I’ve said many times that i’m all for giving Wood and Morales full seasons to see what they can do… but there’s more changes we can and should make along with those.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Jan 5, 2009 1:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

ya i think we just need to start developing our own guys to do that

maybe back off the hyper-aggressive style we preach in the minors just a tad to let the patient guys do what they do. Cant help but feel Kotchman would be the next kevin youkilis if he was drafted by Boston.

Thats the long term solution, we just cant keep forcing ourselves to make trades or sign free agents to get guys who command the strike zone. I hope Arte noticed that during the Departing Boras client’s stay here.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 2:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

something has to change.

Kotch would've had that.

Career OBP

Figgins: .356.
Izturis: .337.
Aybar: .298.

I’m okay with Izturis leading off and playing short. As a matter of fact, if it means bringing in Dunn or Abreu, trade Figgins for another arm, perhaps bullpen in case Speier can’t get it back together. Wood at 3rd. I like it.

1. Izturis SS
2. Dunn / Abreu LF/RF/DH
3. Vlad RF/DH
4. Rivera LF
5. Hunter CF
6. Napoli C
7. Kendrick 2nd
8. Morales 1st
9. Wood 3rd

by matt92130 on Jan 6, 2009 10:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

We should at least EXPLORE Abreu/Dunn rather than being totally OK with our current situation.

by Sethy on Jan 5, 2009 12:09 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Emphatic No

We’re overcrowded as is and do not need another mediocre bat cramming the outfield and blocking prospects. If that’s the route the Halos want to go, they should re-sign GA—which would at least show loyalty to the guy, who would be much better than Burrell or Abreu.

Light Up That Halo!

by Clutch on Jan 5, 2009 1:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

actually, based on stats

Abreu is MUCH better than GA… and younger too.

but you’re point is valid… there’s not a need for either of them.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Jan 5, 2009 1:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait, what prospects???

I wasn’t aware we had OF prospects. Wood, Morales (If you still consider him), and Adenhart are the only prospects that we’re likely going to give a legitimate shot to this year. Wood is starting at 3rd or SS (Unless he is horrible in the spring and Aybar or Izzy light it up). I personally believe we’re trading Aybar, Izturis, or Figgins this offseason. Morales is our 1st baseman. Adenhart will be given a shot in the spring for the 5th spot. Who else do we have. How does Dunn, or Abreu block anyone?

Peter Bourjos – Will not be ready in the next two to three years.
Chris Pettit – Not ready for the majors in way, shape, or form.

Regardless, I’d rather have Abreu or Dunn’s production 3 years from now, then our minor league outfielders coming up.

Mediocre???? Dunn, Abreu, and Burrell are far from mediocre.

Dunn has alledgedly lost 20 lbs this winter

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

by hauldog on Jan 5, 2009 2:08 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps increased mobility?

Last year he showed modest improvement in the outfield

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

Did he?

Everytime I saw him, he reminded me of Willits playing CF in Fenway.

Metrics and tidbits I have read about scouts said he was better in left.

Right he is an abortion.

GAH!

don’t say that… it makes me shudder to even think about it

Perhaps the Burrell and Bradley signings can form parameters for a Dunn deal

Burrell’s 2-year deal pays $8 million per year. Bradley got a 3-yr deal for $30 million. Could a 3 year contract for $30 million be enough to land Dunn? At that price it would be a good signing for the Angels. Dunn’s value is maximized if he DHs full-time (not possible given the Angels older OFs). But he still would be valuable to the Angels if he starts around 80 games at OF/1B with another 70 or so starts at DH.

A quick snapshot of their offensive skills.

Career AVG/OBP/SLG
Burrell: .257/.367/.485
Bradley: .280/.370/.457
Dunn: .247/.381/.518

Career Road AVG/OBP/SLG
Burrell: .255/.365/.488
Bradley: .286/.378/.460
Dunn: .242/.373/.497

Id imagine if anything, his value may be below Bradley's

simply because the Cubs and Rays are out of the market and he has less suitors to create leverage.

Really, whos left for Dunn? The Nationals, maybe the Dodgers? He sure would make a lot of sense for Oakland, so who knows.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 5, 2009 4:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe...

Oakland has Holliday in LF, looks like Giambi at 1st/DH, and they still have Barton, Hannahan (Both very young). Plus, I think eventually, with the nagging injuries to Chavez, he’ll see more time at 1st/DH. No real room for Dunn.

Nationals have the money and the need.

I’d bet my left nut the Dodgers sign ManRam.

The Giants could after Dunn as well, especially considering that cheap price tag.

The Angels…. sadly rumored not to be involved.

My gut says the Nationals get Dunn and the Angels get Abreu. I’m cool with either.

i don't think dunn or abreu...

wants to play here. as much as i would like to see one or both abreu seems to be an “east coast guy” and dunn is probably a “midwest guy” isn’t dunn from kentucky? can’t see him liking his stay in fake plastic oc. unless he moved out to fontana, victorville, barstow, help w/more…

Norco might be a good fit.

Dunn feels like a 909'er to me.

Which is why he should play for the nationals

I rec.

Wood and Morales are stars in the making. I tend to favor dealing Aybar, but your point is valid all the same.

I say get GA!

But……. he’s soooooooooo lazy! :)

Tex went to the dark side.

exactly, a lefty bat that can get 15HR/85RBI…GA is the man. Sign him for a 2yr/$12M deal. Done.

by Downing Rules on Jan 6, 2009 8:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think we need to get a hitter!!

I will consider about 2010 first because VG might leave after that. Do you really think VG will stay with the Angels for sure after 2010? I think this is still a big question. With a bat like Dunn and Abreu or even Manny, the Angels at least has one more choice to deal with the possible VG leaving. Let say if we don’t get any bat this year and our young player can’t show the talent and VG leaves, I imagine this will be a disaster for the Angels. I don’t think the angels should rebuild after 2010.

Besides, this is a good chance to sign a bat with low price. I don’t think we can get this kind of deal next year. If we can sign a big bat with low price, why not? In fact, with Hunter’s contract, if we want VG back, we at least give VG similar contract or better contract. If we need to sign VG and another free agent next year, it will cost us a lot.

The other reason I think it is a good time to sign a bat is because we won’t lost any of our draft for the bat on the market this year. It won’t hurt our farm and we can get some helps. so why not trying?
