I want Giambi in a Halos Uniform for 2009

I just read that the A's have a 1yr deal in place to sign Jason Giambi for 5.25million this year. I believe we need to step in and try to get him signed for our team.We need a POWER bat. We need a 1st baseman. We need a solid DH.We need Jason Giambi. Not only that but we can get him for a cheap price in my opinion.6million a year for a guy who can give you 25-35hrs and help Vlad in my opinion is cheap. The guy grew up here in Southern Cal. I don't want the A's to get him like they did Frank Thomas. They got him for cheap and Frank Thomas killed us when we faced him. WE NEED JASON GIAMBI !!

stupid thing

i wouldn’t say we “need” him, per se, but he might be a nice asset.

Kotch would've had that.

Somebody wake Reagins up.

This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!

We have 1st baseman

I would welcome him over Dunn

The only reason Giambi will go to the A's

Is the fact there is no market for him. Pass.

he could make sense

as a 1B/DH

The days Vlad DHs, Kendry plays right.

Problem solved.

Too bad he’s signing with Oakland this week

Hmmm

“We need a POWER bat. We need a 1st baseman. We need a solid DH.”

Giambi no longer meets any of those criteria. I will happily eat crow if he suddenly meets all three of those for the A’s.

Catching a crow is going to be tougher than you think.

Giambi is all three of those things (but I still don’t want him).

you have to be an idiot

to not want to take giambi for 5.25 million a year, or even to up that to 8 million a year, especially considering what we pay other players like HGH Jr…giambi is a steal.

by jtkelly86 on Jan 6, 2009 11:19 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A couple weeks ago

I suggested this, right after the Teixeira signing was announced. On a short term deal, he’s likely to be productive. Without looking it up, I seem to recall that he has something like a 125 or better OPS+ every year of his career save for two seasons, one of which was when he had his steroid sickness, and the other very early in his career.

by jjackflash on Jan 6, 2009 11:51 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Flawed logic

To sign Giambi, because we overspent on HGH makes no sense. If HGH’s contract is where the bar is set, by that logic, why didn’t we offer Burrell a 40 mil. contract? We could have gotten Milton Bradley for he same amount. Hell, we could re-sign GA for 30 mil. at 3 years. And all of the contracts are smaller than HGH’s. My point is, a bad contract is a bad contract. Who ever the player is, while Giambi may be a cheap stop gap, ultimately K-Mo deserves his shot at first. As for the DH, I guess its another year of uncertain futility at this position.

He makes more sense for Oakland.

For several reasons. First, his hitting is very much of a style that the A’s like and the Angels don’t. I’m not arguing which philosophy is better, I’m just noting that this makes Giambi more attractive to Oakland’s front office than the Angels’.

Second, his defense is less of an issue for Oakland, not because of organizational philosophy but because of Mark Ellis. Kendrick is an average defender at second, while Ellis had the highest UZR in the AL last year. Giambi is decent at two aspects of defending at first base, and bad at two others. He can handle a ground ball that’s hit to him well enough, and he’s fair at digging throws out of the dirt. Where he’s bad is when he’s throwing the ball to second, and of course he has the approximate range of a fence post. Ellis will cover for that weakness better than Kendrick would, and the A’s will live with a noodle-armed 1B.

Finally, putting Giambi at DH eliminates the option of hitting Vlad there (an option I don’t think the Angels can afford to forgo at this point,) and also has the somewhat lesser impact of preventing Napoli from hitting there on days when Mathis catches.

All of which isn’t to say that he wouldn’t improve the Angels, but I can understand why they aren’t particularly interested in him.

I think its time for us to accept

that this season is going to be a slight “rebuild” year. The Angels are NOT going to sign any of these bad fielding sluggers, to DH or otherwise (Reagins himself said so). If the team believed Vlad could play 150 games in the field this year we would probably have signed one of these guys by now to DH. Personally, I was all for signing Abreu based on what he brings to the table offensively, but looking over his defensive numbers, he is brutally bad no matter what your metric of choice is. The team believes in defense, and having an outfield of Rivera, Hunter, and Vlad/bad defensive DH-rotating buddy will let alot of hits fall in and cost the team alot of runs over the course of the season. That situation would be even worse with Giambi at first and Morales flanking one of the outfield corners.

The roster isn’t set, but I think a starting pitcher will get added before another hitter. Hey, I don’t like the idea of GMjr starting any more than you guys do, but I’m guessing the team wants to use this season for him to re-establish some sort of value to help get him traded before 2010.

Teixeria was a slam dunk bet to improve the team next season and beyond. That option is gone, and there is not another sure bet out there. The offense as it stands now has a decent shot at being league average. With great run prevention, that will make us as compettive as anyone once again. Not 100 wins good, but how often does that happen? Staying competitive while working in younger players is whats best for the long term health of this franchise. We have been through much worse times with this team, and those worse times include signing/trading for over-the-hill sluggers.

by dmhead on Jan 6, 2009 12:24 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We need another hitter

If Vlad as DH is why we don’t sign any bad defensive slugger, then maybe we should get Rocco Baldelli. He needs extra rest, but is a quality defender when he plays. Or maybe even bring back a real blast from the past, Jim Edmonds.

Reagins and Moreno are willing to throw the dice with the players we have now.

Why are’nt we?

nothing wrong with a backup plan

and Giambi would come here as a DH… we don’t have a true one yet.

Kotch would've had that.

The pitching staff is championship caliber. The lineup is little league caliber.

how could we be so stupid

if we have the mighty Q waiting in the wings?!

but seriously… there’s also a slight possibility of Napoli or Conger making the shift to 1B

Kotch would've had that.

$5 million and change is not a bad price...

Assuming he can repeat his performance last year. But the guy’s turning 38 in two days and hasn’t come to plate 600 times in one season since 2003. Big, fat, and slow sluggers don’t age well, throw in the ‘roid decrepitude and I’d say he has a better chance of spending half the year on the DL than hitting 30 home runs in a marine layer.

Oakland lucked out on Frank Thomas in 2006. But remember Piazza in 2007? Frank Thomas didn’t do so well for them last year either. Signing old-ass former all-stars is what the Autry Angels used to do, I’m happy enough to leave that strategy to the A’s for now.

by Suboptimal on Jan 6, 2009 1:21 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Big, Fat, and Slow Slugger Barry Bonds

Has hit about 150 hrs since he turned 38, so I don’t see how you can assume Giambi is “finished”.

Giamino hit 32 hr’s last year.

If you take Morales, Rivera, and Q’s BEST season EVER in their careers, their COMBINED home run production is 37!

by SocalAngelFaninOC on Jan 6, 2009 1:51 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Giambi is no Barry Bonds

Before he was a ‘roid monster, Barry Bonds was a fast, athletic gold-glover who played all three outfield positions and stole about 35 bases a year. A true five-tool player. The comparison between Bonds and Giambi is not even close. Bonds stole 21 bases after turning 38, Giambi has stolen 18 in his life. Bonds is more in line with Ken Griffey Jr., while Giambi’s body type places him in the same category as Adam Dunn. He has one tool: power (although he should get credit for plate discipline). And when players decline, power is the first thing to go.

by Suboptimal on Jan 6, 2009 2:19 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You do know how he hit all those home runs right?

And Giambi was/is a slugger in the very same mold.

3.5mill apparently

but dont feel bad since yanks gave him 5mill to go away.

Confirming details reported earlier, the Post pegged Giambi’s 2009 salary at $3.5 million, with the $5 million option for next season carrying a $1 million buyout.

I remember that two years ago

there was a possible “Giambi to the Angels” trade mentioned. Almost everyone jumped all over it, saying Giambi was old, slow, and not worth the Halos’ time. Yet now everyone wants him? Weird. Granted, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world for us to have signed him for next year, but he’s hardly worth blocking Kendry Morales for another year.

Andy Pettite

How about Pettite? A winner, a lefty, perhaps he has one or two years left in him. That would give Adenhart another year or two to mature. Kinda like Saunders did with Colon being on the DH. Jut getting him ready while maintaining motivation.

An even better question, would he want sign with us? I’ll bet no…. but he’d be an interesting option.
