Kenny R. and some... answers?

This from good ol' Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com

"The way club officials see it, the possible emergence of Brandon Wood at third base could displace Chone Figgins, adding to the team's glut of outfielders and forcing Vladimir Guerrero to get more at-bats as a designated hitter."

If that doesn't clear anything up, I don't know what will. This seems in line with what Tony has been saying and we've all been discussing here... it's time to give the kids (mainly Wood and Morales) a legitimate shot to see what they can do.

If all goes well, my guess is that we'll see Wood at 3B, Figgy in LF, Rivera and Vlad in RF/DH, and GMJ riding the pine until someone needs a break.

So while it's frustrating for many Angel fans to watch some big-time sluggers sign for dirt cheap, this is clearly the better way to go in the long term.

Best case scenario? Kendry Morales provides Kotch-like numbers in his first full season (which I completely expect) and Woody becomes Longoria 2.0 and a cornerstone of our team for a long, long time.

Indeed

Though not get kicked out like beeotches every year would be nice. You know, like if the boys went down fighting. Which they kind of did this year—which is a good step forward.

i thought kenny rogers from "the gambler"...

and “roaster’s” fame had some answers. you gotta know when to hold em’, know when to fold em’, know when to walk away, know when to run. come to think of it isn’t that an effective way of dealing w/boras?

im excited for this year

i love watching players come into their own. I really do believe Morales will shut some people up and Wood will start to come around. If Kendrick stays healthy, I love our infield going forward.

Going young

is the optimal plan B since plan A (Mark Teixeira) didn’t work out. I would be ecstatic if Woody could become Evan Longoria 2, electric bugaloo.

by Chzburger Jones on Jan 7, 2009 1:29 PM PST reply actions

Wood....

has never had the walk rate to justify that comparison. Longoria is the real deal at a younger age than Wood right now.

Geesh – don’t be sad when Wood hits .230 with 18 HR’s – that wouldn’t be horrible for his first full season.

by jimmuscomp on Jan 8, 2009 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

I would accept that

And in my never ending optimism would accept that and would see it as a great jumping off point toward his projections of .250 – .270 hitter with 30 + homer potential

This is all speculation

Last year Figgy came into camp + mucho pounds sans Nate Haynes and he sucked. What will he look like in 2009?

Fiigy became a very good defensive 3rd baseman. Thats what he was proud of. He has no power. His speed is almost depleted.

The White Sox were looking for a lead off hitter when Cabrera was let go. So they’ve been pursuing Brian Roberts. But there’s no way that’s going to happen. So take Figgy and throw in a minor league SP prospect and get Gavin Floyd the Brian Roberts trade guy.

That would be awesome. Will that happen? Maybe. But Figgy’s value is best used in getting the Angels a SP.

No doubt

especially for someone like Gavin Floyd who was quite quite good last year (probably wont get HIM exactly) but I could see us being able to package Figgy with one (or two) decent prospects for a young starter who is better than a #5. Personally I want Weaver (who I like a lot) to be our #5 so that it alleviates some of that pressure that he puts on himselfand he allows himself to just pitch.

For some people still banking on Morales not doing anything

The same are suddenly expecting Wood to be Evan Longoria II?

While I believe he is going to be a good player, Wood may need to learn how to hit .200 first and at this point, may not come close to Longoria as far as production.

could be wrong

but i think he meant our Longoria as in our breakout power guy that could help fortify the lineup, not necessarily rookie of the year All Star type player.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jan 7, 2009 3:52 PM PST up reply actions

that's exactly what i meant

i don’t expect Wood to be an All-Star and ROY (is he even considered a rookie anymore?).
but i do think the power is going to surprise us.

Kotch would've had that.

Hopefully

Wood can get into some kind of groove and hit 25 home runs, providing he spends the full season on the MLB roster.

by BBFan1 on Jan 7, 2009 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

quality is still my #1 concern. 25 HR's against the 4th and 5th starters or weak bullpen guys?

Can he hit against the best? Who cares about useless late home runs in games long ago decided? Leave that for the fantasy baseball leagues. Quality is what counts.

by Big Bad , "VLAD"! on Jan 7, 2009 8:43 PM PST reply actions

Last year

He did hit a 9th inning HR of Bobby Jenks to put the Halos ahead (even tho they lost in extra innings) and in his two homer game against the skankees his first one came during a 1-1 tie game. The second one came when they were ahead by 8 but it was still a “game” when he hit his first one.

Quality

If Wood was to have any success, I fully expect him to feast on ‘weaker’ opponents.

You’d have some Angels fans proclaiming Wood as next great hope if he puts up decent numbers this upcoming season against those ‘4th and 5th starters or weak bullpen guys.’

by BBFan1 on Jan 8, 2009 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

Isn’t that where most players are successful anyways?

by Seik1177 on Jan 9, 2009 10:10 AM PST up reply actions

Probably

If Wood has any sort of success he can build on, it will be progress in his early MLB career.
