Smoltz and Baldelli rumors in BOSTON
Just wondering what everyone thinks of these 2 signings...
John Smoltz and Rocco Baldelli supposedly deal is done.
Will Smoltz be healthy next year ?? and how bout BALDELLI...what do u guys think this means for the Red Shucks ??
Also,Chan Ho Park signed with the Phillies look out now !!!!!
I'm also wondering what the regular season record the last few years vs Boston has been.. I seem to remember us having success against them in the reg season.but of course they have gotten us in the pay-offs.
How is the weather in LA anyway ?? Its colder then cold here..lol..lots of snow and wind.. I bet it would be nice to spend these cold months there.

ummm
who cares?
they’re two oft-injured players who probably won’t contribute too much.
Kotch would've had that.

Weather in LA/OC
Foggy and chilly (60’s). You know how we freeze our butts off if it gets down below 68.

Winter is almost over!
Roger has his Little League try-out at 4 p.m. this Saturday at the McPherson Athletic Complex in Orange. Spring is just around the corner! Rev, didn’t you attend the University of Iowa? How can you say 38 degrees F is cold? I spent a winter at Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska in 1971-72. The lowest temperature we had there was (-) 15 F.
Roger and I went to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on December 30th. Near the end of the game the fog rolled in. I decided to return home to Orange on I-15 via Corona to the 91. I recall being caught in a bad fog on I-5 after attending a Kansas City Chiefs @ San Diego Chargers game in December 1968. I did not want to repeat that experience. The I-15 route was about 25 miles longer than the more direct I-5. I utilized the time listening to six Tangerine Dream albums (that was on the round-trip, not one way). I highly recommend the Live in Cleveland June 24, 1986 Tangerine Dream album, especially the second disc. I was going to wait until the Cleveland Indians came to town to mention it but that was my coastal fog alternative!

I used to live right there
I can still walk to the facility from my parent’s house.
I’m a two-time former South Sunrise ALL-STAR.

North Sunrise Little League reporting in here...
(and I attended McPherson back when it was a middle school, not a magnet…)

P.S.
I actually go further back than that. At one time, in the early 60’s, it was just “Sunrise Little League” and played out of what was then Yorba Park (corner of Chapman and Yorba). I was in A ball then. The league split into North and South as the populations of Orange and Villa Park grew. I personally dug the infield paths of the A and AA diamond on the field of Handy Elementary (the one that sits in the middle of the grass and faces southwest) when I was 9 years old. That basepath is still there.

Roger has played on that Handy field!
In 2008 AAA fall ball. Thanks for digging the infield paths so that baserunners can keep off the grass!

-10 in Berkshire two nights ago now that's f---ing cold
Yep I’m grumbling and I’m bitchy and I’ve still got achy bones but that translates to 14 degrees fahrenheit. Now that’s fucking cold. That’s my f-bomb for January, and Berkshire is only about 45 miles west of London. Cold, dudes and dudettes.

Baldelli and Smoltz
I think Baldelli has a disorder where he is constantly running on fumes (energy), especially after a quick workout. Sounds like permanent mono.
Smoltz could be useful for them… seeing as they have a lot of arms now. The Red Sox are notorious for giving their staff a start or two off in hopes to keep them fresh. Or maybe like Escobar for us next year, Smoltz will be used in the bullpen. May be better suited for short stints rather than 5+ innings. Smolts and Penny are decent fliers. It’s not as if the Sox are relying on them to carry a staff, just compliment Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K. Also maybe mentor Bucholtz. They still have Wakefield who can start. They potentially already have 5 right there.
Beckett, Lester, Dice K, Bucholtz, and Wakefield.
Substitute a healthy Penny and Smoltz for Bucholtz and Wakefield, and they’re dominant.

Good moves/gambles
I’m far from convinced either move will pay off, but both deals (same w/Penny) have a significant amount of upside and carry very little risk considering they don’t make any big financial committment ($6M guaranteed for Smoltz/Baldelli combined and not on the books for next year when they may want to be a player in free agency).
Smoltz is 41 and coming off shoulder surgery so I’d be pretty surprised if he ends up being healthy enough to contribute. That said, the upside of a frontline starter who is one of the best big game pitchers we’ve seen in MLB history is easily worth $5.5M for a big market team like the Red Sox.

Smoltz is totally worth the risk. If he pans out they will pleased and their rotation will be sick
Boston has taken chances on a number of injured pitchers. If one of them hits their rotation will be very tough.
This is the worst offseason in years. But hey we got Colorado's closer!
