Angels/Yankees Breakdown

With the Angels set to play the Yankees in the ALCS (Don't ttry to tell me the Twins are coming back because they can't win 3 straight) lets break down their upcoming series

Lineups:

The Yankees' 2 best hitters A-Rod/Texieria are better than anything the Angels have (Unless A-Rod's home run vs. Minnesota was a fluke and he goes back to his .200 hitting in the playoffs). Despite all the talk of the Yanks potent lineup the Angels have more depth with Abreu (Very underrated and hitting well), Hunter, Vlad and Morales. Figgins cancels out Damon but Posada, Cano and Jeter get major edges over Napoli/Mathis, Kendrick/Izturis and Aybar. Still the Angels are odd in that they produce runs with small ball well the Yanks play for the big inning. Everyone on LA’s around .300 but the Yankees have the most power.

Edge: Even

Benches:

The Angels have a deep bench and they platoon Napoli/Mathis at catcher and Kendrick/Izturis at 2B. Matthews and Willits could both start on certain teams and provide speed off the bench. The Yanks have Gardner as the top speed guy and will go to Molina when Burnett's pitching. Hairston's good but won't be used except maybe for speed. Having Hinske who's gone to the Series the last 2 years can't hurt

Slight Edge: Angels

Defense:

Neither catchers have great arms. Teixeria gets an edge over Morales, Jeter over Aybar and Figgins over A-Rod. Hunter and Abreu are gold glovers but the Yankees OFs aren't bad enough for it to be a huge difference

Edge: Even

Stadiums/Fans:

The Yankees have had sucsess at the new Yankee Stadium. Though they lose some advantage because more of the fans will be suits than usual they still have a passionate fan base. Not to steryotype Halos fans but Anaheim fans from what people who've gone to Angels Stadium tell me are most like a cult  cherring when the scoreboard would tell them to but not when Lackey or Weaver would have 2 strikes on someone. Yankees fans (Though I hate them) are in it from beginning to end and have less of the "cult" stuff. And I know many Angels fans will take offense. Just saying thats how some are. Also people jumping on their bandwagon now that they've actually gotten past the Sox isn't gonna help

Edge: Yankees

Baserunning: Only Jeter really runs for the Yankees (With Gardner on the bench). Figgins and Abreu are elite base stealers well Aybar, Kendrick, Izturis, and Hunter can all steal. Posada's weak arm doesn't help. The Angels also go 1st to 3rd better than any team in the league

Major Edge: Angels

Starting Pitching:

Both Kazmir and Burnett are hit or miss. Weaver and Pettitte both gotta start on the road but I still give Weaver an edge. CC and Lackey have both struggled in the past come playoffs but both pitched well in their Game 1 starts. Still if CC is on his game the Yankees have a major edge. Saunders and Joba are wildcards. The Yankees though will give Joba alot shorter leash than Saunders in Game 4. Still the Yankees ceiling is higher than the Angels

Edge: Even

Closers:

Fuentes has been solid all year for the Angels and got 2 saves vs. the Sox. But he's not the greatest closer of all time.

Edge: Yankees

Bullpen:

Jason Bulger, Kevin Jepsen, Darren Oliver, Matt Palmer and Ervin Santana vs. Alfredo Aceves, Phil Coke, Chad Guadin, Damaso Marte, Phil Hughes and David Robertson. Hughes has been a great setup guy for the Yankees though Oliver had a good LDS vs. Boston.  Jepsen's got nasty stuff and Santana and Palmer  were good starters for LA this year. Robertson pitched great in Game 2 vs. the Twins and Girardi clearly trusts Coke and Aceves. In extras though I'd take Palmer and Santana over Marte and Gaudin (The longman and worst arm in the Yanks pen). But the key difference is Phil Hughes

Slight Edge: Yankees

Bench Clearing Brawls:

Unlikely but fun to breakdown. They always come down to 3 or 4guys the Mickey Riverstypes who suckerpunch people at the end. That said I'll break down the major "players" for each team.

Yankees: Sabathia (The Biggest), A-Rod (0-1 Lifetime), Jeter (Would always defend his teamates), Cano (Possible wild card), Swisher (Seems like he'd fight), Pettitte (On steroids)

Angels: Morales (Big guy), Hunter (Strong), Abreu (Sturdy), Kendrick (Possible wildcard), Gary Matthews Jr (On roids), Guerrero (Another strong guy), Napoli (Big catcher)

Angels seem more loaded here

Edge: Angels

Managers:

As good as Joe Girardi's been this year, you could argue Mike Scoscia's the league's best manager. His teams consistently do the little things (Cut offs, going 1st to 3rd,  turning the double play) better than anyone

Edge: Angels

History:

The Angels and Yankees have met twice in the playoffs both times in the LDS with the Angels winning both times (2002, 2005). The Yankees even going back to the dynasty of the 90's always seemed to struggle with the Angels

Edge: Angels

Overview:

The Angels are better this year but the Yankees still have a better team. If the pitching struggles even slightly the Angels have a shot. Whoever wins this wins the right to dismantle the National League champ (Only Philly has any chance)

The Pick: Yankees in 6

I didnt get the chance to see it.

I was going to L.A. to see it but the everyone wants to wait till next week when it goes nationwide. Some of my friends (who believe they are film critics, and have such great taste) have said that I is what they have hyped it up to be as scary as they say. But I must warn you its indie as fuck.

Hoss,

we used to take the imdb’s bottom 100 list and find movies to rent, starting from the bottom.

Lars and the Real Girl easily fits in the bottom 10.

A quick simulation of the first two games assuming the matchups of Lackey vs Sabathia and Weaver vs Burnett has the Yankees with the following (see below) win probabilities. Of course if the Twins somehow stretch the Yankees out, the pitching matchups could be different on the Yanks side.

Game #1: 66.28%
Game #2: 60.36%

Doesn’t mean the Angels will lose those two games of course, but just some info. I expect Vegas to handicap these games quite the same, perhaps weighted a little more towards the Yankees. I know the betting public loves the Yankees, but I can’t see the Yankees being the 74+% favorites at home that they were against the Twins.

I'm going to rebut this post category by category:

As this post is wrong or misguided on many levels, but really is only in his perspective that he has majorly failed. A common trait of a die-hard Yankee fan.

Offense
The Angels and Yankees are relatively equal in terms of offensive might; however, the offensive prowess is accomplished in dramatically different ways. The Angels start with good baserunning skills, smart 1st to 3rd, small ball, and the potent hitter placed strategically throughout the lineup. Not to mention having unfathomable clutch-factors with RISP. The Yankees, on the other hand, play for the longball and almost exclusively so. Since they play in a park little bigger than most little-league infields, they can accomplish this feat without much struggle whilst at home.
advantage: neutral-ish @ Yanks
big big edge to Angels @ Angels

Benches
Benches, yes, we are deeper, younger, faster, and more prepared for injury and replacement. The Yankees are old, getting older, and require key players to be healthy for their style of game to continue.
ad: Angels

Defense:
Catching: Again, both catchers on the Angels do throw like inept women: Mathis way too high, and Napoli way too low. Posada is lucky if his throws make it back to the pitcher, while Molina, touted for his defense and game-calling, hasn’t had nearly as much success at throwing would-be runners out as you might think. mini-ad: neutral
First: Teix is better than KMo, though KMo is significantly better this season than last and is better now than the beginning of the season. You can’t disregard Teix’s ability to get to the ball and his lightning-quick reflexes. mini-ad: Yanks, but barely, and the gap is decreasing.
Second: Cano is garbage; HK and Izturis are not. mini-ad: Angels
Short: Jeter is shit in terms of talent, but the guy does have some fucking 6th sense, it’s almost ridiculous. He’s always in the right place at the right time.
Third: Figgy is a fantastic 3b. Somehow. But ARod still has flashes of his former defensive brilliance. mini-AD: Angels, but barely, and not for lack of talent.
OF: The Angels are just so, so superior in every way:
Rivera >>> Damon in terms of range and especially arm strength,
Torii >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cabrera in every measure of human worth,
and who the fuck is in right for the Yanks…? anyone? Does anyone even play over there? It doesn’t matter, because Bobby is solid enough “so that it doesn’t matter”. Douche. mini-ad: Angels, by miles.

Stadiums: Can the Yanks even fill their brand-new, one billion dollar stadium? No one can even afford to get in without mortgaging their townhouses or selling bums to the city. But there are wo words for the advantage of the Angels at home. Words that strike such terror into the hearts of opposition everywhere, that they only dare be uttered during the playoffs: Thunder. Sticks.
Boom. mini-ad: Angels.

Baserunning: This is exceedingly in the Angels’ favor, but not for the reason of stolen bases alone. Sure, the Angels do that exceptionally well, but the Yanks averaged around the same amount of net stolen bases/game. The real advantage comes in the gutsiness of the runners going first to third, and all small ball moves, executed with machine-like precision. Do the Yankees have anyone who can consistently perform a bunt, and beyond that, anyone who could even make it to second on a bunt?
Advantage: Angels

Team pitching: The Yankees have the clear bank-roll edge, but outside of CC, 1/2 of Burnett, the occasional stellar gem of Pettitte, and MoRiv, who do the Yanks have that can perform on the big stage?
The Angels have Lackey, who is coming off of a 7.2 IP shutout effort against the tough Red Sox offense and is pitching better than his already good 11-8, 3.83ERA, 139K injury-shortened season would indicate. Next is Weaver, who has something to prove, and you’re seeing it on the mound now from the 16 game winner. Kazmir is, indeed, a wild-card, but he can be. Given the Angels have Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Darren Oliver, and Matt Palmer (a veritable 11 game winner) all pitching out of the ‘pen, they have depth beyond the Yank’s wildest dreams. Who you going to put up against it, Joba? Chien-Ming? Good luck, there, hoss.
Ad: Angels, ever so slightly.

Closers: MoRiv. is better in every way, but Fuentes has more saves… something to think about there combined with all of the knowledge above.
Ad: Yanks

Managers: If Scioscia doesn’t get manager of the year this year for scotch-taping together a 97 win team out of a despair-ridden team wrought with anguish over the death of a fallen comrade, having 4 SP on the DL on opening day, and doing without Vlad AND Torii for 6 weeks at the same time, there is no justice in the world. What has Girardi done? He couldn’t even coach a 200mil team to the POST-SEASON last year. Now he has even better players, 8 of whom are making 20million or more per year, and he’s got them to the championships. Congratulations, you did what your organization paid a quarter-billion dollars to do. Ku-fucking-dos.
Also, Scioscia was a better catcher as a rookie than Girardi ever was in the history of any time. Tell me who YOU’D rather run into as he’s blocking the plate.
Advantage: Scioscia and his Angels.

Well, that’s about it. I’m tired, and now I’m steaming pissed about this post, despite its relative courteous nature. I’m going to bed and waking up Friday afternoon to watch us whomp the big, bad 26-time WS champs on their own turf.

The Stadium analysis

Not to steryotype Halos fans but Anaheim fans from what people who’ve gone to Angels Stadium tell me are most like a cult cherring when the scoreboard would tell them to but not when Lackey or Weaver would have 2 strikes on someone.

I appreciate your effort man, but this is blatantly false. Maybe we can be passive during the regular season, but during the playoffs, it’s a different story. Being at Game 1 in person, I can tell you that the fans were not only cheering, but standing during multiple 2 strike counts by Lackey and Oliver, standing when we had runners on base, standing many other times. Joe Torre remarked during the 2002 playoffs that he thought the fans might have been the loudest he’s ever experienced.

you are crazy

The Yankees are going to kill the Angels. History does not matter because we are in the present. If everyone wants to dwell on history, why don’t you think about the Yankees’ TWENTY-SIX world series titles, more than all of the other teams in the American League East combined. The Angels are not even close to that number. And I know what you will say:The Yankees win for their money, well that’s true but, the Yankees are the ultimate source of capitalism in the MLB. If a player doesn’t perform, cut him, if their is a great player on the market, then the Yanks will do whatever it takes to get him. Get with the real picture, the Angels will be losing in 5.
