Should Angels Trade for Papelbon?
There are already talks of the Red Sox dangling Jonathan Papelbon in a trade this winter and replacing him with Daniel Bard. In return, they would supposedly want a "young bat". Could the Angels take a look at acquiring him? We don't necessarily have a "lights out" closer any more, so this report intruiges me. Even considering his crap-job on Sunday, he's a pretty damn good closer.
Of course, the Red Sox would ask more from the Angels than they would from other teams. However, do you think a package starting with Brandon Wood, Sean O'Sullivan, and Mark Trumbo turn the Boston heads?
Note: Papelbon could possibly be turned back into a starting pitcher if needed.

is paps available for arb this year?
and is it his first, will he be a super two, etc..
basically how long till his free agency?

Is he eligible for super-2
and becoming a free agent one year earlier (or is that for getting arb one year earlier?)
Anyway, we already have Fuentes/Jespen/Hondo/Shields/Bulger/Oliver/Palmer. Wow, I did not think we were that good in the pen. We dont need to make a trade, lets conserve the resources (cash+players)

I don't know
What is super-2? All I know is he under Red Sox control for the next two seasons and they don’t plan on bringing him back after that if the market will command the absurd amount it usually does for elite closers.

You would give up Brandon Wood, Sean O'Sullivan, AND Mark Trumbo--PLUS MORE?--To get Papelbon?
This is a package I might consider for Roy Halladay, but for Jonathan Papelbon?
No thank you. He’s not worth giving up Brandon Wood alone, let alone throwing in at least three other superstar prospects.

Honestly, I'm hoping to resign Figgins...
Thus, making B-Wood available.

But, again
Papelbon is not worth Brandon Wood. Whether or not we should get rid of Brandon Wood is a different question and opens up a whole ‘nother can of worms. But if you ARE trying to get rid of him, giving him up for Papelbon, especially in a ridiculous package, and especially to team that’s a major rival, is insane. If you’re giving him over to Toronto for a perennial Cy Young candidate and rotation anchor to replace (or complement, depending) Big John, that’s one thing. But Papelbon? Again, no thank you.

Also, just to throw it out there
I’m still in no way convinced that giving up on Brandon Wood is a good idea at this point.
Perhaps it’s better to re-sign Figgins, let one of Vlad/Abreu (pref. Vlad given Abreu’s absolute value to this team, even though I’d hate to see Vlad go) go, stick Figgins in LF, put Abreu at full-time DH or rotate him there with Rivera, put Wood at full-time 3B, and off you go. If Wood doesn’t work out, put Figgins back at third, Abreu back in RF and Rivera back in LF full-time, and then put Naps in the full-time DH role and bring up Bobby Wilson to tandem with Mathis. Though I don’t see Bobby Wilson wearing Halo Red when spring training opens next year, for some reason…Anyway.

It pains to even write about possibly letting Vlad go, but it makes sense.

Why do we have to let Vlad go?
Has anyone asked Vlad if he was willing to take a reduced role? Coming off the bench sharing some at bats at DH? Injuries are a natural part of the sport.

As he should.
He’s not so broken down that he should be a part time player yet. We basically need to decide who we want at DH. Vlad and Abreu seem to be the top choices. If neither works out, Napoli is another intriguing option. Or Quinlan.

I definitely see the best scenario in just letting Figgins go, hand Wood the 3B glove and see if it works out, and keep Vlad around for at least 1-2 more years to see what he can do with a full season.
And then LET’S GO WIN!

If it’s in a package for Halladay (or more, but ONLY in the case Halladay is involved—or Pujols for that matter, how about that? ;-D) and Figgins is re-signed, then OK I guess…but otherwise I’m still so not sold on trading Wood. The time has not come.

What IF we win the WS?
how would we handle the offseason, would we not do anything knowing that we are good enough to win. Or would we keep doing deals just like the Lakers, resign key players, and go out and FA to upgrading on others (Ariza for Artest). Even though im not saying we are a lock to win it all, but as a fan I like my chances when I say the Angels will be champs.

Ok, I believe that too, but it's a different point
Figgins isn’t going to be the Figgins we know now forever. Even if we win, Lackey might be asking for more years and money than Reagins, Moreno, and Scioscia are willing to give. At what point do you hand the glove to the 3B who’s been touted as the next best thing for so long? We don’t want to make a Glaus-MacPherson or Molina-Mathis mistake here, but the time’s coming when it’s time for the FO to put up or shut up—like I said above, the most realistic scenario is either Bobby or Vladdy going away and the line-up getting reconfigured, and given the way things have gone this year, it’ll probably be Guerrero who’s bidding us farewell. In an ideal world, yes, if we win the WS we keep everyone—but is this line-up that worked this year necessarily sustainable into next year?
In any event, I agree with you—this club can easily go all the way through on its current talent. I wold love it if that holds true next year, too! It just might have to be different in some way.

MacPherson,
could have been good but he got hurt and now we have had Figgy take his spot. I like Figgy but he is not our guy at 3B. But I’m not favoring Wood over Figgy either, but its a tough call. I liked the Abreu signing up to the part where Abreu might be taking over Vladdy. Abreu is good but to know that he might take Vladdys spot at DH next year sucks. And Lackey is the ace of this rotation and deserves the money he demands, whether this team gives it to him or not. If Vlad does not get signed then I will be petitioning at angels stadium, much like how the packers fans did when Ted Thompson, Mark Murphy, and Mike McCarthy said we dont want Favre back.

No trade
I don’t want Papelbon. I don’t like him, I’d much rather root against him than be forced to root for him. I understand he’s talented, but I’d hate seeing him in an Angel uniform as much as Shea Hillenbrand. He just has that Boston taint.
I really think Jordan Walden will be our closer of the future. They haven’t moved him to the pen yet, but the guy can hit 100 MPH. He just looks like a closer. And hold on to Wood. We’ve been hearing about him as a prospect for so long, it’s time he actually gets a chance to bust out like Morales did this year. I’d hate to see, after all this time, him do that for another team. Especially Boston.

no way
No way at all. Papelbon will be making Frankie money and he has peaked – he might stay at that peak but I would rather disperse all that money on OUR arbitration guys than on this dude.
by Rev Halofan on Oct 12, 2009 7:33 PM PDT reply actions 3 recs
On top of that, I seriously doubt they trade him.
Bard has a lot of talent, but he needs more experience.
I am about 99% certain you will see Papelbon report to ST in a Red Sox uniform.
by sothball on Oct 12, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not as certain
The Sox will otherwise wind up paying Papelbon about $8M to $10M to close, based upon his 2009 salary (which was a contract settlement outside of arbitration) and his relative success, excluding the results on Sunday.
As a result, the Sox could pick up the option on Wagner (who pitched pretty well and by 2010 will be completely healed from his Tommy John surgery). Wagner is motivated (wants to pass 400 saves), and could serve as the mentor to Daniel Bard, as Percy did for Frankie (or as Lee Smith did for Percy).
Meanwhile, Papelbon can still be had for relative cheap over the next two seasons, which gives him value to mid-level teams as well as the ones with the large budgets. Both Chicago teams should be in the market for a top closer, for example, but so should the Rays, and the latter team is stocked with the sort of high-level young talent the Red Sox could use to fortify their minors, as they watch a roster with rapidly-aging players like Lowell, Ortiz, Wakefield, Varitek, even Drew.
The point is that one year of Wagner at $8M would be cheaper than two seasons of Papelbon in arbitration, and that Wagner should be more amenable to assisting Bard in taking over the closer role in Boston. At the same time, Papelbon is under team control for two more seasons, which provides a tremendous opportunity to another team seeking to plug a hole in the 9th for at least 2010 and 2011 at a fairly reasonable cost (relative to Frankie, Lidge and others).

He will match or surpass Frankie’s salaries. Cheap? O am guessing no
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
by hauldog on Oct 12, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cheap
As always, that’s a relative term, especially when it isn’t my money, but I figure he’ll make about $8M in 2010 and $10M in 2011, depending upon performance next year.
That said, $18M for two seasons in exchange for anchoring the 9th of your game—when your name is “Chicago Cubs” and you’re losing games late because the guy coming out of your pen is named Kevin Gregg—then it might well be the sort of move in the offseason which invigorates the fan base after a tough season and gives them reason to buy tickets and gear once again. Money is made by teams in this game in a number of ways, and new ownership may wish to place its stamp upon the team.
I’m not saying that trading Papelbon is a lock, only that it is a possibility which can make sense for the Red Sox. He could fetch some intriguing puzzle pieces in return.

Not many teams spend that for one pen guy
So I a still thinking cheap does not apply.
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
by hauldog on Oct 13, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
However, conventional thinking doesn’t apply here. We’re not discussing a 30-something Brian Fuentes (for example), but Papelbon, who has several special assets:
1) He’s still quite young
2) He’s still 2 years removed from Free Agency
3) His health is good and his arm is sound
4) (perhaps the most intriguing) He has rings—two of them. That tells a GM Papelbon knows how to handle the pressure of a divisional drive and the playoffs. That is the je ne sais quois which sets him apart from other closers who would likewise be on the market (Kevin Gregg, for example).
He may not go anywhere. I just think the possibility is strong. While the season for the Sox didn’t end the way the team might have wanted, Papelbon still has quite a bit of bankability for a team looking for an experienced, healthy closer.

All it takes is one willing team
It doesn’t need to be a replay of the ridiculous bidding frenzy for Roy Halladay. It needs only to be a team desirous of a young, talented and experienced closer, and having the spare parts required to make a deal.

I think part of the terms for Wagner waiving his no-trade clause to go to the Sox
was the Sox agreeing to not exercise Wagner’s option and allow Wagner to become a free agent. If I remember right, I think Wagner also wanted the Sox to agree to not offer him arbitration, but backed off on that.
by WiHaloFan on Oct 13, 2009 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
But he has also reportedly been conflicted regarding whether or not he’d return to baseball. Nobody makes a clear decision in the wake of a series loss like that.
However, I seriously doubt Wagner would get a more lucrative multi-year offer than the $8M option in his current deal. If the Sox pay him the $1M buyout and send him on his way, I don’t see another team offering more than one guaranteed year, nor more than $7M to pitch. If the Sox aren’t interested, then that is that, but if they come to terms with Wagner it would open up an opportunity to swap Papelbon for some talent. Lowell (inexplicably) is signed for next year, as are Martinez and a few others, while guys like Varitek, Ortiz and Wakefield are shadows of themselves. Unless the Sox can lock up Bay or another high-profile slugging OF (and the reports of talks between Epstein and Bay weren’t encouraging), there will be some holes to fill in the Sox sooner than later. Papelbon could fetch some key pieces in a trade.

Frankie’s antics after a save will be considered out of bounds the moment that teams on offense stop celebrating walk-off wins as though they just won the World Series.

My local library does not have a copy of the Baseball Code Of Conduct. So I do not know the rules.
I do know that one guy spending 4 seconds screaming, hollering, and praising his God compares quite feebly to the sight of…
…one whole team spending 30 seconds with one guy racing around the entire infield screaming and hollering and raising his hands to the sky and jumping up and down while 20 of his pals race out to home plate tossing their caps in their air, raising their fists to the sky, screaming and shouting and joining together in an ad hoc mosh pit to tackle the first guy when he leaps into their arms and touches home plate.
So, if you DO find that Code Of Conduct, can you look those up and tell me why one exhibition is considered a joyous celebration of sudden victory, and the other one is considered douche behavior? Especially since both sides have the same thing on the line at the same moment with, most likely, the same level of importance on the outcome?

2009 season
Papelbon saved 38 games in 41 SVO to Fuentes 48 games in 55 SVO. Papelbon pitched 60 IP in 66 games while Fuentes pitched 55 IP in 65 games. I would give Fuentes a slight edge in overall performance though to be fair they are fairly evenly matched from my perspective. Papelbon would not be better than what we have now. Fuentes is signed through next year at nine million a year and an option for the same money in 2011. If Papelbon became a free agent he would be looking for Frankie Rodriguez money or better which is in the twelve million range. A move like this giving up valuable prospects in a trade when there is really no need, or spending a much larger sum on a FA closer when the money could be saved or used elsewhere on a big bat or a qualified starter just does’nt make any sense. Let’s not lose perspective.

really
you would give Fuentes a slight edge on performance this year? how is that? with the stats you put up it seems clear that Paps had a better season on converting SVO. if Paps was on the Angels and had the SVO like Fuentes that would have been 2-3 Victories. Paps doesn’t become a FA until 2 more years. so the team has some control over him. 8-10M/yr over the 2 yrs compared to Fuentes is pretty even. so there is no money being wasted. of course it depends what we trade but if its Fuentes or Paps, i would take Paps over the next 2 yrs anyday. this year included.

He’s a douche. He belongs on the Douche Sux. That’s all the professional analysis the topic deserves. I refuse to resemble the Red Sox in any way.
However, some Sox fans don’t seem to mind resembling the Angels. In fact, this one Chowd wants to pretty much BECOME the Angels. I was just about to post what I discovered while trolling Over the Monster (which I’ve never done before, but I really wanted to see how the Chowds are reacting to losing) when I saw THIS post. Check it out:
“If anything, get a Figgins at third and move Lowell to DH…And if Wake doesn’t want to come back then we need to sign Lackey so the MFY don’t…Also, If not Bay then who? Abreu would be a great option for 2 years and cheap.”
Pretty funny. They constantly harp on how awful they think our style of baseball, and yet this guy wants the Sux to BE the Angels. They’re just sad and confused.
This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.

BIG N O
While fuentes isnt exactly lights out, the amount of money we’d have to pay paps for such a minor upgrade seems foolish. As we saw, Paps isnt untouchable, Id way rather retain the services of lackey, bobby, vlady, wood, and whoever else we’d have to sacrifice to get ass lips
In Kobe we trust!

i hate being a defender of Paps
but damn to say he isn’t untouchable in the 9th and a minor upgrade. this was his first blown save. maybe i’m trippin out but Fuentes sucks and yeah i would take Paps skill as a closer over Fuentes any day.

he may be a douche, but he’s a douche we could use. c’mon.. who here would honestly not love having a back end of Jepsen, Shields, Papelbon and Fuentes? Are you kidding me?? that would be amazing!
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Do we have a closer problem?
Last time I checked, Fuentes had the most saves in the AL. Sure, that’s not a complete barometer of optimum greatness, but it’s not a sign of weakness, for sure.
by yeswecan on Oct 13, 2009 12:12 AM PDT reply actions 1 recs
No we don't have a closer problem.
It’s just that Angel fans have lived the nightmare of Fuentes’ few blown saves this year but Papelbon is always in their nightmares.

Doesn't matter
The Red Sox will not trade Papelbon. That would be insane, a boneheaded knee-jerk reaction to temporarily placate an overexcitable and melodramatic fan base. He had another great year this year, which should mean a lot more than one bad game in a playoff series they were probably going to lose anyways. All this talk is just crazy talk. Move along.
by Suboptimal on Oct 13, 2009 2:59 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You miss the point completely
That would be insane, a boneheaded knee-jerk reaction to temporarily placate an overexcitable and melodramatic fan base.
There is nothing punitive about it, any more than the Twins were so pissed off at Johan Santana that they decided to trade him.
These days, the currency is in trading players with some time left on either their pre-free agency clock, or with a couple of seasons left on an affordable contract. Watch the Brewers shop Prince Fielder this off-season, for example.
Trading players about to become free agents is soooo 2000.
"He's not a Rhodes Scholar to begin with''~Theo Epstein, talking about Papelbon
by George Kaplan on Oct 13, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Except that Boston is not in rebuilding mode, they have the money to pay him in arbitration, and they even have the money to buy him out as a free agent if they so choose. Daniel Bard may be the heir apparent, but they’re not about to give up on a proven relief ace just because of one blown save. I think this rumor was kicked up by the Boston Globe staff, and I swear they make up 90% of their material. I guess you can’t help it when you have half a dozen writers to cover one team.
by Suboptimal on Oct 13, 2009 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again, missing the point
This isn’t about rebuilding, it is about trading a player the team doesn’t forecast being in the long-range plans.
Once upon a time, a player was kept until the eve of his free agency, then bid adieu. Now (Santana, Teixeira, etc) a player is traded with some mileage still on the pre-free agency clock, allowing the receiving team to have that player under control for more than a single season (or fraction of that season).
In return, the payout is higher than for what would amount to a rental of a player. The Rangers traded Teixeira one year and two months before his free agency (when the Rangers determined the team couldn’t afford what he was expecting) and received 5 players in exchange, 4 of which figure to be on the 25 man roster in 2010, one of whom might become one of their pitching stars for the next decade (Feliz).
Then the Braves traded Teixeira at the deadline to the Angels and received Kotchman and a pitcher who’s disappeared in their minors.
That’s a big difference. The key is keeping Wagner as closer for a season, and having him mentor Bard as the latter serves as the set-up man, much as Percy tutored Frankie in Percival’s last season. Wagner is undecided about whether he wants to pitch in 2010 right now, but he’s 15 saves shy of 400 (and all of us like round numbers) and he would want only to be on a team where he is the closer. If the Sox can convince him to take a one-year deal for the opportunity to reach his 400, then the team could put Papelbon on the block and see what he would fetch in trade.
The Sox minors aren’t bad, but think of the players who are now early- to mid-30s who will be fading soon (some, like Lowell and Varitek, already). Victor Martinez’s contract is up after 2010 (there is that “trading with more than a season to go” thing again, with the Indians getting Masterson in the deal), and the team still needs to resolve the LF situation.
Restocking the minors wouldn’t be a bad idea.

As a Vikings fan I’m already forced to see Brett Favre succeed on my team. The last thing I need is Pap Smear to get traded to the Halos. Ugh.

this would be a great trade-papelbon is a fine pitcher and i dont think brondon wood is going to make it with the angels now that we have aybar-kendrick and isturis for a long time and ullivan can be a good pithcher bot papelbon will just give us more—-again a great rade for both teams

but I would only get papelbon if the price to pay him would not hurt us keeping Vlad-Abreu
it just depends on the cost-if the cot is ok then we do the trade-he would just make our pen fantastic

I would agree with this
As much as I hate to admit it, as you and others have pointed out, a back-end of the pen of Jepsen-Arredondo-Oliver-Shields-Papelbon-Fuentes is INSANE. Not that it would make ESPN give the Halos any more of chance compared to other bullpens.

No...
I don’t want Papelbon because I hate his stupid little face. He’s constantly showing off his “O” face, and I don’t like it.
by matt92130 on Oct 13, 2009 6:40 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
However...
I would be interested in bringing in Billy Wagner, if he’d be willing to accept a spot in the bullpen, and not guaranteed a closing role. If Fuentes struggled, or if we had injuries like what we had with Scot Shields this year, his experience and skill could be extremely valuable to us.
Think he’d be open to the possibility?
by matt92130 on Oct 14, 2009 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The ONLY reason
…Wagner would sign with a team is to be the closer. His goal is to surpass 400 saves, and he needs about 15 more to reach the target.
Being any team’s setup guy isn’t going to get his attention. Being a closer-in-waiting won’t get it done. Either he is the closer or he isn’t in that team’s uni.
Right now he’s making all sorts of noises about retirement following the loss on Sunday, but he’s come so far from his Tommy John that I suspect he’ll think more warmly of the game come Christmas and he’ll be shopping himself as a free agent closer.
