10 reasons why i am scared of the yankees
Numbers mean diddly in the post season, so not playing the numbers game here. So here are 10 reason why I think the Angels will NOT win the pennant.
- This is a different Yankees team than in 05, much like we were a different team to the Red Sox
- In the Bronx for 4 games, I don't care who you are, that is a tough environment to play in (even if it is no up to capacity)
- Angels are too relaxed and are on a high (from beating Red Sox)
- Are the Angels underestimating the Yankees (like Brian Cashman said)
- Which A Rod shows up? A Rod, if he continues his Twins Romp, series over - he was a leader in the ALDS
- Angels are the underdog, practically no one is giving them an ounce of a chance (except Buck Showalter?), in the ALDS some gave us a shot
- The constant I-5 Series hopes (media has influence on your game)
- Can the Angels bullpen hold - the Yankees came back all 3 games
- Thus, can the Yankees bullpen hold - Papelbon is no Rivera (no matter how much he wishes - see 2008 All-Star Game)
- Will Big Vladdy Daddy be patient or hack at anything? (Game 1 or 3 of ALDS)
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Well, yeah, but...
1. This Angels team hasn’t exactly rolled over for this Yankees team.
2. The Bronx may be tough, and we’re not technically in the same house, but red’s pulled it out in the past anyway.
3. I seriously doubt the Angels are relaxed about facing the Yankees, and anyone who is will get bitch-slapped by Torii.
4. I dunno.
Maybe someone else will continue with creative counterpoints to the rest – I have to get back to pretending to work.

MAn I though I was the only one.
1. The Angels were 2nd in comeback wins this year
2. F*** the Doyers let’s take care of the Skanks.
3. See 2001 when Mo was in his prime and blew the World series.
First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

ok, i guess, but
1. this is a different angels team
3 & 4. a certain amount of relaxation is good, i hear, and i think only the media and cashman think that the angels look down at the yanks. that’s one of the more ridiculous things i’ve heard all year
8. that last game of the series, soth didn’t manage the way he would this – no jepsen or bulger in those games
10. we won with vlad hacking, anyways, so that’s a non-issue.

Different team, and stop listening to the media fer cryin' out loud.
Seriously, I think we are capable of splitting the first two in NY, coming back here and winning at least 2 more, and splitting the last two in NY which takes either 6 or 7 games.

What do you expect with so many off days between series?
There isn’t any baseball on except for analysis and predictions from the highly biased ESPN, and the MLB Network guys can only talk strategy and matchups for so long before even they become boring. The media can talk about a potential Freeway Series as much as they want, but that is still far away from where we are now. We must focus on the task at hand – beating the Yankees and returning to the World Series. We Angel fans need to be patient like Abreu until Friday (hopefully), then be pumped up like Torii.
And I agree with your prediction of how the series could play out. Split, then take 2 of 3 here, then take either game 6 or 7 to close it out. Heck, I’d love for them to split in NY then take all 3 at home!
This should be a classic ALCS. Lets go Halos!

Yeah, this essay is just the result of nerves.
The LA Times has been running some good articles about the Angels and the Dodgers every day this week. I haven’t felt the need to go elsewhere, especially knowing what all the rest of the media always say.
I love to sweep them here, but I’m trying to be realistic. I think this will be a battle from the get-go, and I will be cursing my luck sitting in a lecture hall for the first half hour of Monday’s game, if it is played then.
Rant: It’s bad enough that these lectures are eating the regular class/lab time and not one of the advanced students will be ready for the midterm on Wednesday. The teacher finally, today, pushed back the due date a whole week, but he can’t very well flunk an entire class, especially one like ours which is made up mostly of older people and a handful of MFAs.

I'm not as nervous as I was for the Boston series either, but I think it's partly because
you can’t stay at that level of nervous energy for too long or you collapse. Right now the “tiger” is on my block, but not halfway inside my house, if you get my meaning. By Friday evening the tiger will be quite a bit closer, but still not halfway inside. I think that level of insane nerves was purged from my system by that first game, and I think it might have been heightened in the first place because we were going to that game.

We can write up lists about how nervous we are!

We can go crazy and call it: Angels in four!!!

Oh My. This scares you?
1. It’s a different Yankee team. OK. It’s also the playoffs. Anything can happen.
2. So the Bronx is tough. Fenway isn’t?
3. Relaxed…uptight…it’s all relative. How do you know they’re too relaxed? They whooped it up a 2 weeks before the start of the ALDS, and then destroyed the Sox. Then whooped it up again. Is that the sign they’re too relaxed? Would you be pleased if they were all walking around like robots and talking like Joe Friday?
4. I wouldn’t take what Cashman says seriously. Where do YOU get the sense they have underestimated the Yankees?
5. Which A-Rod? The same one that has shown up for the last 12 years. Baseball’s a game that can make the greatest players look like amateurs over the course of a few games…or a 5-7 game series. The opposite is also true. Besides, one player rarely is the difference between a win and a loss.
6. Talking heads filling air time don’t know any better than you who will win this series. I won’t listen to any of them until they tell me in advance the score of each game, the winning pitcher, and any significant plays. Not gonna happen right? Right…because they are simply guessing like you and me. And filling air time.
7. Media has influence on your game? Huh? I seriously doubt that any of the Angels will be thinking about an I-5 series while in the batter’s box, pitching, fielding, etc. against the Yanks. Where do you get these ideas?
8. OK…a serious question. ANSWER: I won’t know until it’s put to the test against the Yankees. The bullpen is still a bit scary, although Santana may be a big help (as Weaver was last year against Boston in game 3). But then, what happens if our starters throw 7-8 innings like Lackey and Weaver did against the Sox? Then the role of the ‘pen is minimized, and I will have spent time worrying over nothing.
9. I think the Yankees bullpen is better than the Angels, but it’s not invincible. And I’m tired of talking about Papelbon.
10. He’ll probably hack away until a crucial time when it’s more important to get on base. Just like he did against Boston in the ALDS. For the record, he also drew a crucial walk in Game 2 of the ALDS (and the pinch runner – Howie – scored the go-ahead run).
The Angels did well this year against the Yankees. I was at the game in September where they fell behind 5-1, rallied to tie the game, but eventually lost 6-5. This game was after the "Road Trip From Hell". One key hit could have given them a safe cushion and eventual win. They appeared a bit fatigued from the road trip (and playing 40 games in 41 days)
Seriously, step away from the news coverage. They have got you too revved-up. If the Angels play to their potential, it should be a good series. Enjoy.

The Angels ownership of the Yankees in the playoffs have only previously occurred in 5-game series. It will be more difficult over 7 games AND with a more potent Yankee lineup.
I still call Halos in 7.

by Downing Rules on Oct 15, 2009 12:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
well
i totally agree the angels MUST split the first two games in new york if they want to win the series…
okay some reasons why i had my points (not in any particular order):
1. The Angels don’t have a stigma against the yankees as against the red sox (on the contrary, the yanks have one against us)
2. yankee stadium while not having the history, draws a lot more than boston, and is more enclosed than boston as well (no giant wall in left field), plus historically they are more rambunctious
3. media – think of the the vikings, weren’t they tired of all the constant brett farve talk and questions from the media, i think this might happen to the angels (granted ny media is tough in general)
4. even as fans, we are taking the yanks lightly (compared to the red sox series) – and that is just looking at the pre-series posts
5. my only reference about paplebon is that Mo Rivera is better (even with 2001 hiccup)
I totally agree baseball is a VERY streaky sport, and we even saw that last series. The Angels scored in bunches (almost every time they scored in an inning was a multirun inning, not one run here, another there). And if the Bombers are having a three pitchers for their staff, they might only pitch 5 or 6 innings to preserve their arms (presumably for a possible world series). When did the Angels score most of their runs last series, after the 7th inning (when the sox starter was still in, or inherited runs).
my main point here was that are the angels as revved up against the yankees as they were against the red sox (who they were what 13 of 14 in the playoffs before this series)?
also, I am trying to start a conversation here, some like sothball and Downing Rules are trying to talk back. insulting isn’t what i am trying to go for. my main point is, what are the angels weak points in this upcoming series (some of which i listed).

It does not matter a single iota that some fans, maybe even most fans, are thinking this series is a lock for the Angels.
Not One Whit does it matter in the vast world of Things to Worry About.
What matters is that the Angels take the Yankees seriously, which we have been assured repeatedly that they do. Now, you can choose to believe them or not, but don’t think that what Angels fans think about the series matters.

OK, that’s not something someone couldn’t have predicted.
But what could not have been predicted…he hits the wall so hard that the fasteners break and that whole section of padding falls onto the warning track, and as Torii lifts himself off the track and as his teammates rush out to help him celebrate, all eyes turn to an unexpected image. Where the padding previoulsy stood, someone at sometime has painted an oversized Angels jersey behind that section of padding. On the jersey is the number 34.

Why I'm worried about the Yanks
1. Better rotation 1-3 (possibly offset by the weather timing factor, which might force them to use a fourth starter), 2/3rds of whom are lefties — against whom Kendry doesn’t hit as spectacularly well. (Contra: the Angels are more flexible because they can send out four starters, and with the weather-related schedule changes, this could be significant.)
2. Teixeira gives them more range on the right side, which means Jeter doesn’t have to patrol as much ground — better up-the-middle defense.
3. Better defense generally, as they have a center fielder (Melky Cabrera, and more so, Brett Gardner) with actual speed.
4. Better bullpen (just about any AL team would)
5. Superior (just) offense
It should be a close series, but I’m not feeling it. Plus, on the Rob Is Just Plain Nuts Gut Feel meter,
6. It would be a perfect bizarro-world finish to the season if the Angels sweep the Red Sox and then get manhandled by the Yanks, whom they’ve been pretty successful against lately.

I am seriously tired of all this Yankee garbage.
Lets be honest here about the Yankees rotation. Is it good-yes but it is not great or even invincible. CC is not as good as Lester in my book and we beat him. CC was hit pretty good in game 1 against the twins and I believe the Angels will hit him too based on past experience. Burnett is schizophrenic. If the good AJ shows up it will be a tough game but we usually get to him at some point. Andy is definitely hittable.
This yankee bullpen stuff just bugs. There were points in the year when their bullpen was considered one of the worst now it is somehow better then the Red Sox. I don’t think so. The yankee bullpen outside of Rivera is not that good. Hughes and Chamberlain can both be hit and often get into trouble. Bruney, Aceves, Coke and Marte are nothing to cry home about. The Yankee offense is good but lets not forget that the Twins weak pitching shut the yankees down for pretty much the whole series except for a couple of at bats. I think our pitching should fair well against the yankees. Lets not forget that this team could have easily won 100 or more games if they did not blow all those early games. The yankee’s offensive numbers look good because of that band box they play in. Tex’s game winning homer against the Twins in game two does not even reach the warning track at Angels stadium

respect that i have an opinion, or try to counter my argument, both of which most people have (or said it was ‘stupid’ which is fine – because it is based on argument). Personal attacks are not cool.

Yeah...
The spc@verizon guy is the village idoit. Get it right. Halos in DE has been civil, rational, and a decent contributor.

I was kidding mostly, but some of your fanposts seem a little of the wall.
Like the south park one.

I think his concerns are valid
Except for #3 and #7.
Nothing wrong with voicing your concerns.

Angels in 5-6
It’s serious
The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

As a Yankees fan...
I’m terrified of the Angels. Why? 2002. 2005. The Yankees are favored, and my thoughts are Yanks will win in 6 games, but I don’t count out the Angels until it’s over.

About banwagoners
I think every fan should be entitled to the level of involvement in a particular sports. Those who choose to immerse themselves in the finest of detail more power to you, and those who don’t so what. Some of us enjoy the game holistically with out troubling ourselves with slugging percentages, RBIs when man on second, ERA, bullpen lineup, etc, ad infinitum. I don’t know what is slugging percentage or how to calculate and ERA, and I don’t care. Ignorance about it does not prevent me from throughly enjoying an Angel victory or lamenting a loss. We enjoy the gestalt of the game simply based on input/output and final results, and we are as loyal to the franchise as you gurus. To bag on the Yankees based on this kind of fan is to ignore a fan’s choice on the level of involvement on a sport. Why am I here, well, some you Angel fans are just plain funny.
And yes, I do dislike the Yankees simply because of the media saturation, as I disliked the Dallas Cowboys.

+1
i too have no idea about those stats (why i started the thread, no stats). only one i would enjoy is runners moved up (be in sac fly, sac bunt, single, force out, whatever – how many times runners move up a base when you are up to bat)
i am on here because i like talking to other angels fans, esp. being on the east coast where it is only mets, yankees, and red sox. (and now the occasional phillies fans – and this is coming from a phillies fan as well)

I agree with you, to a point...
I agree about the statistics knowledge.
However, I think we were beating on bandwagon fans. A bandwagon fan will be nowhere near the “die-hard” fan base during down points in the franchise’s history. They do not have an appreciation for the highs, since they were not there to experience the “frame of reference” of the doldrums.
Since they were only “casually” involved, they do not feel the pain.
I love this team.

I think the Yankees will conquer the Angels!!
JK. But You made some great points. I am a Yankees fan and even I can’t tell you which AROD will show up to the game tonight. Good luck and if for some odd reason we lose than I’ll root for you in the WS. :P
I plan to live forever. So far so good.

Are you serious?
“…Angels are the underdog, practically no one is giving them an ounce of a chance (except Buck Showalter?), in the ALDS some gave us a shot”
If anything the Yankees are underdogs! Take a look at the last fourteen years and you tell me who has the better head-2-head record?
