Bobby Abreu turns down Angels offer... $16 million left on table
"The Angels offered outfielder Bobby Abreu a two-year contract extension for about $16 million, SI.com has learned. However, Abreu did not accept the offer and is believed to be looking for more after helping to lead the Angels to the ALCS against the Yankees." LINK
What do you guys think? How much is Abreu worth and how many years?

Give him $20 mil for two years.
Make him a permanent DH if need be. Guy is good for the team.

$16-20
Two years for $16-20 is going to be the market value for him. Didn’t he just say how much he LOVES this team and wants to return? So take the $16 then, Bobby.
My biggest fear is Bay becomes too expensive for Boston, and they then grab Abreu to play LF for two years.

All things considered, what they’ve offered is more than fair. Great guy for the team or not, if he really likes the Angels, there’s nothing wrong with it. If he’s all about greed, then see ya later.

Burrell got 2/18
And Abreu is a hell of a lot more useful than Burrell, even if he’s older. However, something like 2/20 makes me nervous, since it doesn’t leave a lot of room for Abreu to decline due to age. There’s no guarantee he’ll have two more years as good as this last one.
I don’t think Abreu is going to get much better than what the Angels are offering. There are a lot of OF/DH/1B types on the market, and some of them will go cheap. Can’t blame the guy for wanting to try the market though.

He’s getting old. Might be a big mistake to pay him $10 mil/ year.
But remember, Jon Heymoron wrote this article. You know, the same guy who wrote that an “anonymous scout” said that the Angels wouldn’t win a game against the Sox.
I wouldn’t trust him. Just wait and see, if Bobby’s not ready to sign then hes not ready to sign.

He will be 36 years old next year. His defense will only get worse, so I’d say around 2 years $15M-$18M is about right. Doesn’t hurt him to see if someone will give him a third year at that annual salary. Can always fall back on the Angels offer or something close to it at worst case.

I hope we don't lose Bobby
Bobby is worth more than the offer and rightully turned it down. He made 6 million this year and the offer is only for 8 million a year, at best a moderate raise (hell Matthews is making more than 10 million sitting on the bench).
Raise the offer to 20-22 million for 2 years maybe throw in an option for another year. We do not want to lose Bobby!

If I was Arte / Tony / Mike
I wouldn’t want to pay Abreu for what he’s done this year – with a younger player perhaps, but not for a guy who will be hitting his mid 30s.

You do realize that what he’s done is valued at well over twice what he made this year, right? Yeah $20 million might be a bit high, but there really isn’t a price on how valuable Abreu’s been for this team. No more than 2 years, but I hope Reagins does the right thing and keeps him on!

good opening offer, IMO
and probably a fair one. i don’t think it’s the years that are the problem (no way he’s getting more than 2 years ANYWHERE), it’s the money.
i’d go for a 2 year, $20MM deal, with incentives that could push it up another $1-2MM per year.

Loyalty goes both ways
2/$16MM is a very fair offer; add an option for a 3rd year at another $8MM, with a $2MM buyout, and everybody should be happy. If he gets old fast, Arte isn’t on the hook for too long. If Bobby continues to perform, he gets 3 years and $24MM. Not bad.
I’d like to keep him, but it’s not like Aybar and others will all of sudden forget to how to hit if he leaves. His influence will be felt long after he departs.

Good point about his lasting influence.
However, I remember someone else on HH suggesting we sign him for a couple more years, then keep him on as hitting coach. I really like that idea. That way he can continue to influence new players as they come up. Maybe the Orioles will hire Hatcher as their manager, so Sosh won’t have to feel bad about letting him go.
This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.

Still seems a bit high, and he’d probably be started off as a roving instructor in the minors or an assistant to Hatcher, but otherwise sounds good.

If this is NEW news,
it’s the first act of several necessary for the FA situation to be decided for the 2010 team. If the news is real, the offer won’t change; he will take it, or leave it….no negotiations.
The Angels have succeeded in setting a precedent they want to continue: that of making a “fair” offer which will be accepted or rejected in a reasonable time (Hunter, Teixeira).
If Abreu walks, it will make decisions regarding Vlad and TEvans less complicated.
I personally vote for Vlad and TEvans.

Didn’t TonyReagins JUST SAY aw eek ago that no offers have been or will be made to players until AFTER the postseason is over???? Gee, I wonder if it might get in the heads of Lackey and Vladdy to find out Abreu was offered a contract before either of them? The article is bullshit meant to fuck with the Angels.

Don't beleive it
The club has made it clear they do not negotiate during the season. Media making up a story to fill the space between games.
Plus the club has made a habit of making its best offer upfront & that doesn’t sound like its best offer.

A Low Offer
It seems strange that the Halos would give this kind of offer at this point in the offseason.
If you’re Bobby why would you give up Free Agency for an offer that is at best “fair.” If you’re Reagins, and you want to keep Bobby out of Free Agency, you are going to have to overpay. You would be overpaying him and in effect blowing him away with an offer that would induce him to avoid the uncertainties of free agency.
I also gotta laugh at all the fans who gripe that Bobby says he wants to stay with the Angels, so he should take this deal. Really???!! This could be the last contract he signs as a ballplayer, and you think he should take a lowball offer just because he likes California, likes his teammates and like the Angel style of ball. Give me a break. Which one of us, would forgo the opportunity to make 3-4 million dollars more for sentimental reasons?
In the end, Abreu will get 2 years at 10-12 million with incentives and a mutual option year.
What makes Abreu more valuable than Vlad is that the guy actually knows the strike zone. Vlad is used to hacking, and he will probably always be a hacker. The problem with this is that as Vlad gets older and his reflexes and body gets slower, he won’t be able to hit all of those balls out of the strike zone. Those are pitches that Abreu never tried to hit in the first place.
Where you will see a downward trend with Bobby is in the power numbers. Looking at his numbers you see a decline in his doubles and homers. That trend will continue, but he’ll still be a clutch hitter, albeit, one who hits more singles and walks more.
It’s fine to say, that the Angels shouldn’t overpay Abreu, but then who is your right fielder? Gary Matthews? Reggie Willits? Terry Evans? The Angels are not going to try to sign either Bay or Holliday. Both of those guys would cost far more money that they are willing to wrap up in Abreu. Moreover, both of those guys will receive love from NY and Boston, so it will be hard to compete with that kind of cash. When it comes down to it, we might have no other choice, but to moderately overpay for Abreu.
At this point, all of the Angel Free Agents want to test free agency. Lackey is likely gone since he has the most market value and someone is going to overpay for him. Moreover, the Angels picked up Kazmir with the understanding that he would be insurance in the event of Lackey’s departure. Figgins is also gone, since he’s a legit leadoff man and those guys rarely are on the market. Of the Angel free agents Abreu might be the one who the Angels have the best chance at retaining. The nightmare scenario is if the Angels retain none of their Free Agents. It’s a prospect that I don’t want to think about. Moreover, with the Angels in the ALCS, why not enjoy the moment and not think about the future. After all, the present is pretty awesome.

Who Knows?
It’s fine to say, that the Angels shouldn’t overpay Abreu, but then who is your right fielder? Gary Matthews? Reggie Willits? Terry Evans?
RF: GMJr, TEvans, Vlad, JRivera, Figgins, KMorales, Abreu?
LF: Willits, Figgins, Pettit, Holliday, Bay, CCrawford, Quinlan?
Everyone here has their own thoughts and wishes, but I think we’ve got lots of options and trade scenarios. Lots of balls being juggled here.
It does seem very odd that this “news” story would come out late yesterday.
