Angels Throw Another Away, Yankees Win In 13

Game Two Final Score - 13 inningsLos Angeles Angels 3, New York Yankees 4

Once again, fighting the rain, the cold, the Yankees and their umpires, the Angels did themselves in by playing sloppy defense and stranding 458 runs on base.  Okay, it wasn't that many (actually it was 16), but it felt like the game was over after the Yankees scored their first run.

Wasting a great start by Joe Saunders, and solid relief work by Kevin Jepsen and Darren Oliver, Brian Fuentes surrendered an opposite field home run to Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the 11th after the Angels had managed to take their first lead of the series.

ALDS Game 3 hero Vladimir Guererro stranded 8 runners, twice leaving the bases loaded and ending the Angels final threat by hitting a weak groundball with two runners in the 13th.

The Angels head to Anaheim, down two games to the Yankees.

I dont give a shit........

no matter how many had been left on no matter what had happened the Angels had the lead until Fuentes decided to throw 3 straight fastballs. What is the deal with that? 1 trick pony isnt going to get ARod out. Why not a slider down to change the eye level of the hitter. Nice signal calling Mathis….

Willie Mays Aikens is FREeeeeeeee

by Angel Aviator on Oct 17, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't believe he didn't throw an 0-2 slider.

It was an absurd pitch to throw a fastball right over outside part of the plate where ARod could poke it 300 feet for a HR. ARod hits a lot of HRs to right. Bad job by Fuentes for not studying the scouting reports/video.

Hey, Jeff Fucking CERA Mathis called for the fastball.

And since Scioscia spends all day blowing Mathis, you can’t blame him for being so fucking stupid.

BOTG = Fuentes
BOTG2 = Mathis

Yes, and not only that , ....

but ALL THREE PITCHES were in basically the same location. If you’re throwing 96mph that is not a good idea. If you throw 91-92 it is downright idiotic. I said going into the playoffs that Fuentes was a concern, an Achilles heel if you will. Tonight it came to pass.

by Jack Frost on Oct 17, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually wish there were option E

Vlad for being a playoff bust year after year and Fuentes for blowing yet another save. I will be glad when both are gone. Sorry Vlad but you don’t cut it when it matters.

by daze on Oct 17, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No.

The ones who watched Mathis call for a pitch that he should know is the wrong pitch. Fuentes has faced A-Rod 9 times now, I’m willing to bet Jeffy has been behind the plate for plenty of Rodriguez at bats to know that he NEEDS to be pitched inside.

So….Fuentes (minimal experience against A-Rod) listened to Mathis (enough experience against A-Rod), and he got burned.

he’s in the lineup to knock the crap out of the ball and to make a closer unneccessary. this team was not built to win 1run and 2run games. If we can’t score more than 3 runs a game we don’t deserve to win. Esp. against the Yankees.

by Spird on Oct 17, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's actually really simple

A-Rod has about a 60% chance at least of making an out there (I’m factoring in Fuentes pitching in that number) and about a 1 in 10 chance at best of hitting a Hr. You put him on first with no one out, he has a 41.7% chance of scoring (maybe slightly less with the hitters coming up, but not much less). A-Rod was also 0-5 in his other AB’s. I guess we should have walked him in those AB’s too.

Vlad-obviously sucked tonight. But him not getting the big hit didn’t cost us the game.

Fuentes-gave up a tying run, so that didn’t cost us the game,
 he just didn’t close it.

Izzy-simple force at first. Then probably walk posada. Then deal with Jeter. At least maybe were still watching the game.

So my blame goes to Izzy for the ending on his play. Whatever lead up to that popint I don’t care. We survived the other mistakes but couldn’t survive this one.

Blame Guerrero/Abreu

Great game pitched by Saunders and nice relief work by Jepsen, but the 13 LOB by Guerrero/Abreu was terrible. Come on we all knew Fuentes was going to give up that home-run to A-Rod he’s been killing us all year long. Better start looking to trade/sign/ promote (Jepsen) someone to be the new closer next year. But lets still have some faith, their coming home and we still have Weaver/ Kazmir.

There seem to be two sets of fans here:

#1. People that get down, after a tough loss, calling the series over, when, theoretically, they could still win four out of five games.

#2. People that will be saying in the ninth inning of game four, when their team is down 10-0, and down 3-0 in the series, that there is still hope.

Which one are you?

I do not post on here often but...

The first thing I thought when I saw Fuentes warm up was “please don’t put in Fuentes please don’t put in Fuentes”. My second thought was “The Halos Heaven guys going to be LIVID when he blows this save.”

In all seriousness, Vlad used to be my favorite player and it wasn’t even close. Even with my blinders I realize it is time to drop him down or out. Tonight was a total fiasco for him, even more so than Fuentes who was just following his status quo.

Fault:
60% Vlad
20% Fuentes
20% Mathis, Sciosia, whoever

True

Can’t really complain about losing to a team with a $250 million payroll. The Yankees will absolutely smoke whomever they face in the WS (can you imagine what they’ll do to the likes of Vicente Padilla). It’s too bad the season has to end like this, but given the way things started out 4 days into the season, well, they’ve shown a lot of heart.

The team is going to look a lot different next year and it might be a couple of years before they’re back at this level, but there’s a solid foundation in place.

Oh well.

Home Runs

I kept yelling that after the 10th inning or so! Why can’t we just once have a game with something so joyful instead of being tortured every inning?!?!

Izzy screwed up...

but just because he made “the last” screwup doesnt mean he should shoulder the blame… cause that was just a game full of failures for the halos. 3 runs against the yankees doesnt usually win fine ok… but uhhh tonight it was good enough until the 9th… if saunders, jepsen, oliver can take care of business for 8 innings fuentes should be able to butch up and get the freaking job done. NO question. Vlad had a whole lot of LOB failures, but a about half of those came after fuentes shit the bed. lets see how many fielding gaffe’s did aybar have. anyways im just rambling… bottom line is the halos didnt bring their A game to New York.. hope they find it back at the Big A.

YES IZTURIS FUCKED UP

YES FUENTES BLEW THE GAME
YES VLAD FUCKING SUCKS

BUT THAT BALL IZTURIS THREW ENDED UP RIGHT TO FIGGINS, WITH HAIRSTON ABOUT 3 FEET OFF 3RD HEADING HOME.

AND HE GOT SCARED AND BOBBLED IT AWAY!

THIS GAME COULD STILL BE IN THE 18TH INNING, WITH VLAD UP TO BAT W/ THE BASES LOADED AND ALL THE HOPES AND DREAMS STILL ALIVE, OF A POST SEASON WHERE VLADIMIR GUERRERO ISN’T A CHUMP 95% OF THE TIME.

The series is not over… It is close,we have no room for error and we have likely win all 3 games at home or it is…
I hope the warmer weather brings us some luck, some scoring and better defense…
Right now, everyone is struggling…Vlad gets all the blame b/c he is the 4 hitter, but Figgins,Abreu,Hunter have all not played to potential..

This game got over at like 3 am here, wow was I tired… After the A-Rod homer I said it was over,it was just a matter of time…

Have a good day guys in LA…Let us keep the faith and stay strong,I like Weaver and think he is going to come out strong…We face a little more adversity and come through..

Where is Mark Teixeria….?

Pitchers Blew it Again!

Just when the Angels had all the chances, they self-destructed yet again! Imagine, the announcer mentioned last game that Alex Rodriguez should be pitched inside and of course, low yet, Fuentes did not have the common sense to keep that ball low and inside of Rodriguez. Ervin Santana was horrible too. Imagine, he is asked to throw for a couple of innnings and he cannot even do a half decent job of it! What I don’t understand is when Santana had that horrible first inning he threw, why did not Scioscia yank him and put in Palmer instead. That could have been a huge difference there. Lastly, Vlad showed why he struck out so many times! No plate discipline and he tries to hit each and every bad pitch thrown his way. Two times, he had bases loaded and he just cannot control himself!

by JimmyBlue on Oct 18, 2009 7:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yanks scored 4 runs in 13 innings at home.......

yeah the pitchers blew it…………

give me a break.

So, Fuentes was Fabulous?

It makes me wonder if we were watching the same game. So, Fuentes blows his save, Santana pitches like crap and our pitchers did a very good job because the Yankees just got 4 runs? They won the game which is what counts! Not excusing Vlad’s lack of plate discipline as he had 2 bases loaded chances to become a champ instead of a chump.

by JimmyBlue on Oct 18, 2009 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

last time i checked

santana didn’t air mail it or bobble it in the 13th.

by Halos in DE on Oct 18, 2009 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Palmer you say?

against the Yankees at their house? No, Santana was the right call and he got the groundball that he wanted at the end.

by SenorChuckles on Oct 18, 2009 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

but look at the bright side

1. their bullpen is absolutely shot
2. in games 1 and 2 our pitchers stepped up to the rubber and were 99% as good as the yankees
3. once we get back to halos baseball, slick fielding and timely hitting we are okay

by Halos in DE on Oct 18, 2009 11:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Pen is shot?

Joba pitched 0.1 innings, Hughes pitched 0.2 innings, Coke pitched to two batters, Rivera only threw 24 pitches. There has been an off day, making all those guys completely ready to go. Aceves only threw 1.1 and he usually goes for at least 2. The only guy really probably unavailable is Robertson.

by GMan83201 on Oct 18, 2009 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i say vlad is BOTG

RISP – come on vlad, this is why the Angels signed you, got it out of your system against red sox – even though recent fan shot says differently

Fuentes – he only pitched 1 inning, and didn’t lose the game

Santana – poor fielding behind you will make the best pitcher look like crap, same with Scott Kazmir recently (the angels haven’t given him run support so he loses close games)

by Halos in DE on Oct 18, 2009 11:35 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

VLAD ALL THE WAY

Some of those swings were absolutely AWFUL! Even by Vlad standards. Rory was even hinting at Vlad’s suckiness during his last at bat. “This is your cleanup hitter, at some point he has to come through, heres the pitch….groundball to second.”

by Doctor Wu on Oct 18, 2009 11:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

BOTG=SOSH

Why pitch to A-ROD in the 9th with two bench player due up? Why play Figgy when he’s sucked all postseason?

VladFuentZurus

VladFuentZurus – the trinity of suck . VladFuentZurus works in mysterious ways… and it really sucks.

What a painful game that was!
The Yanks handed that game to them and they blew it.
Hopefully they get their shit together in Anaheim.

by jhens76 on Oct 18, 2009 12:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Angels have tried every way possible to let the Yanks win this and even with all our help they barely won at home, so i see us sweeping them in Anaheim, then who knows what happens. The only thing i think 99% of us feel is that Vlad needs to be hitting about 7th or 8th because he has never and i mean ever done anything in the post season but be an epic failure!!!
