Anyone catch good ole Tim McCarver yesterday?
How many more years must we endure this royal ass of a color man?
By now you are all very aware of tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum (Buck and McCarver) drooling over their east coast love dolls that is any player currently playing for a team NOT west of the Mississippi River. We've endured them for years now. It has gotten to a point where we come to expect their BS and hope that our radio's are not ahead of the TV delay or at least the bar is loud enough that they mute the TV and put on close-captioning so we dont have to listen to these fools.
Yesterday though featured probably the worst, or best (depending how you look at it) of McCarver I have ever heard. However, these moments all featured him eating his shoe and looking like a damn fool.
McCarver: Scioscia should replace Kendrick with Izturis for this next at bat.
(Kendrick base-hit.)
McCarver: Izturis was the batter up who failed to lay down a squeeze in the 2008 Division series against Boston last year.
(Izturis bats in Kendrick.)
McCarver: Excuse me, I was mistaken, it was MANNY Aybar who failed to lay down that bunt.
(Aybar gets out...)
McCarver: Not Manny, I meant Willy Aybar who has a brother on the Rays.
HOLY SHIT, McCarver! Pull your head out of your pinstripe shitting ass and get with it buddy! Do more crosswords! It helps fight alzheimers!
Anyone catch this wonderful two-minutes that showcased the bumbling McCarver at his worst?

voted for rex obviously...
more for him to annoy the hell out of buck than anything else and to neutralize the homerisms in the booth. but really any angel color man would be better than mccarver… i’d take mota in espanol over mccarver any day of the week.

Agreed!
I would pay to hear Hud and Buck attempt to put on a baseball telecast during this series. But we all know Buck would complain and lobby to get Hud off immediately.

IT would be the ultimate revenge on Buck...
…to have him paired with Rex – and a network exec tells Rex before the game “Don’t back down, Rex, it is YOUR booth, we are looking to take you bigtime but you gotta stand up to this pinhead.” And Rex just tramples everything Buck says until pissypants leaves and starts calling the Ice Capades.

I think I am up to at least ten times they have mixed up Napoli and Mathis' names in the series so far.

"Reserve Catcher for Anaheim" is what I heard them call Mathis on SC
Don’t they know we platoon them guys. And Anaheim. I could still see LAoA, but just Anaheim? And more than once.

TBS and Fox have been doing it all playoffs long
it was even worse at the beginning of the Boston series, but then they cleaned it up. I’d not be surprised if they got a special phone call from the Angels and/or MLB telling them what the team is.
the stadium is in Anaheim, the team is the Angels, or Los Angeles (AL) if you wish to be particular and only refer to geographic names. or Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim if you wish to be especially thorough.

This is not an "east coast" "west coast" thing
this is a shitty color man and his sycophant play-b-play guy living in the shadow of his late father thing. One of the best highlights I can remember is Sanders dumping the ice water on McCarver in the locker room after a game. McCarver was miked up and complained that he could have been electrocuted.
Not only is he an ass, but a dumb ass as well (I only wish it worked like that).
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Bo Diaz was crushed to death by his satellite dish
Must of been one of those 12 foot diameter satellite dishes, not the 2 foot diameter dish that DirecTV has.
Bo Diaz died November 23, 1990. He was a catcher for Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati. He had a cup of coffee (one at bat) with Boston to start with. What do Diaz and McCarver have in common? They were both catchers.
I prefer McCarver to Buck. I would rather have Buck electrocuted! McCarver was the best lefthanded hitting Cardinals catcher since Bill Delancey (see 1934 Gashouse Gang Cardinals).
McCarver once set up Richie Asburn for a marvelous punchline.
McCarver: “After the season Lefty (Steve Carlton) and I are going up into Alberta.”
Ashburn: “I don’t believe I have met her.”

Rex is ridiculous and I love it.
Once I was stuck with listening to the Giants announcers because of difficulties with out broadcast, and man it made me miss how ridiculously awful Rex is. Those SF guys were just so dry and blah.
I would gladly take Rex over these 4 hours Yankee knob jobs that are way past their welcome.

I'm beginning to think there's no such thing as a good baseball color man.
Think about it, the best the national broadcasts have to offer are Joe Morgan (gag), Buck Martinez (retch), and Tim McCarver (honestly makes me want to throw something through a window). Hudler, while we love hearing good things about the Halos, is an absolute joke, but the same goes for just about every team’s regular color guys.
Baseball is different from the other sports in that a play-by-play man has the time to do his own color. You don’t need someone jumping in with stories about life in the big leagues. The best guys, Vin Scully and the late Harry Carey, have just done it themselves. They were the best at weaving stories and analysis in with the action, and I think it’s no coincidence that they started in radio.
My favorite two Tim McCarver moments from last night, by the way:
- Mentioning how great the Angel GM, Tom Reagins, has done a great job.
- Spending a full 90 seconds extolling Derek Jeter for his throw to 2nd to nab Abreu. “There’s no one out there to tell him where to throw! So he has to LOOK to 3rd base and find Abreu!” That’s fantastic, Tim. DJ must be the best defensive shortstop of our generation, just like you’ve always said, because he can turn his head from 3rd to 2nd. You make me want to light myself on fire.

For what it's worth....
The AM 830 broadcast is live with no delay for home games so the people at the staduim can listen and not have an anoying delay while they watch live action…
They TRY and sinc the radio broadcast with the TV broad casts for away games but different stations use different delays so the same delay for TBS won’t work for FOX etc.
Now that we’ve had a couple games in NY, I’ll bet that they have it worked out pretty good so WHEN we go back for game 6 we can tune out the nobs and listen to Terry and Rory.
by Jietoh on Oct 20, 2009 7:48 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I heard that ...
they delay one of the broadcasts differently on purpose so you wouldn’t be able to simulcast. The networks want you to listen to their sponsors.
by eyespy on Oct 20, 2009 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh, I doubt it is anything so nefarious.
If they wanted us to listen to their sponsors, they’d put on broadcasters anyone would care to listen to.
Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.
by AlanFalcon on Oct 20, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Terry addressed it on Angel Talk after the game.
Radio is essentially “Live”.
TV has postproduction (graphics, etc…) as well as delays to/from satellite, depending on your service provider.
It’s just darned near impossible to sync it up with all possible providers.

or what about the second guessing of pinch running...
willits for mathis. they have no idea that mathis can move pretty well on the bases and soth has more trust in mathis than wilson behind the plate in a big game that could go on all night. plus, look who got the big hit, mathis! tom reagins must have been very proud.
by thejd on Oct 20, 2009 9:16 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not only that
but the very idea that it makes any difference having Willits at third with none out as opposed to Mathis at third with none out is absurd. Willits only has the edge there in a situation where they take a huge risk in sending him, and I doubt any huge risks are going to be taken when you’re in extra innings at home. Plus, there’s no denying Willits has more speed, but is he a better baserunner? He seems prone to the occasional blunder on the bases (see pick off in game 3 vs. Boston). Scioscia’s post-game comments made a ton of sense as well. With Rivera in the game, the odds of scoring in that situation went down dramatically, and you absolutely want Mathis in a game that tight over Wilson, who the pitchers likely wouldn’t be very comfortable with.

Pick off game # of the ALDS was a bad call
Reggie was safe.
Bunt attempt in Boston was a bad interpretation of the rules. By a bunch of fools. In their blues.
by eyespy on Oct 20, 2009 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll admit
I was in the car for the pick off and Terry never mentioned he looked safe. Either way, the slight percentage increase they get by subbing Mathis for Willits in that situation probably didn’t outweigh the potential risk in getting a nobody like Wilson into the game late. Look at what all of Girardi’s brilliant substitutions got him.
by dmhead on Oct 20, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not only did the camera angles show Willits was out
the more damning evidence was that he didn’t protest the call, nor did Griffin.
He was out. He was leaning too far, the throw was a perfect toss to the 2B side of the bag, and he was tagged out well before he got his hand in. He knew it.

Willits was out.
And I was barking at the TV before he was picked off, because even I could see Reggie leaning and twitching to make his jump with first motion. Instead, his leaning caught him with no momentum to get back. And Reggie said nothing about being caught out for his bad baserunning. He knew he blew it.

NY media doesn't like McCarver, either
Here is a ray of hope to show that even the NY columnists understand really poor color work, whether or not it shades towards their own team.
Money quotes, regarding Rosenthal handing the AL Championship to the Yankees in the early portion of the game:
“It’s like aura and mystique have made a comeback. Teams are falling apart at the sight of the Yankees,” Rosenthal proclaimed. “We saw it in the division series and we’re seeing it here in the ALCS. I don’t want to get far ahead of ourselves, but if you look ahead to a possible World Series matchup maybe the Phillies, the tough-minded Phillies, are the kind of opponent they need.”
If Rosenthal truly did not want to get “far ahead of ourselves,” then he would have kept his mouth shut. The outcome of Game 3 was still very much in doubt. And it wasn’t like the Yankees had bludgeoned the Twins or stomped on the Angels in the first two games.
More incredible was Tim McCarver buying into this nonsense. “… The one thing the Phillies can throw against the Yankees that no other team can – three left-handed starters,” McCarver said.
It is instructive to see how the NY sports writers are (in some cases) savaging Girardi for the sheer number of his late-inning managerial decisions, though one writer noted wryly that those same folks were probably the ones complaining Torre didn’t make enough moves.
Scioscia and Torre have it relatively easy in SoCal.

viewing the NY Daily News online today,
the first thing that struck me was how they’re not even remotely favorable when talking about to their own team. and many of these negative articles were from BEFORE the series started, despite the Yankees being “favored” and talked up by everyone else from Fox to TBS to ESPN and in-between, not to mention their fans all over the internet, including those joining us here the past few days.
granted they’d just lost a game in ugly fashion, but also keep in mind the Yankees had gone 5-0 to start the postseason, so you’d expect at least a little bit of praise or optimism.

Do we have to listen to Buck and McCarver for the WS too?
Bring on REX…. the Angels need a voice in this thing not just this “fair”, “impartial”, “pulling for the yankees” crap we have had to endure.
I listen on the radio but I have kept the tv sound on too – so the neighbors can hear that the Angels are winning.
I’m just so tired of them not even caring enough to know the names of our players. Even Vin Scully does a better job at the names of our player and that guy is as old as dirt.
These guys are the poorest excuse for announcers in this series – If I personally knew them I would harass them for every single mistake they make in the names of players.
Oh well, I’m just glad we have Rory and Terry to listen to – although I do wish Rex was there also – he just gets everyone so excited.
Go ANGELS.

If we are in the WS we won't have to hear about the Yankees. ;-)
I have been listening to the Dodgers games a little and TBS announcers are treating them as badly in this series as they did us in the previous one. I’m kind of surprised that they seem to be pulling for the Phillies.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
by opiejeanne on Oct 20, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not that surprised...
but not because of east coast bias. more in that they’re the reigning champs, and were already leading the series 2-1 (the drubbing in game 2 REALLY didn’t help). also that the Dodgers seem to be crumbling and yesterday might have been the first tipping point, even though most people seem to have already grasped that they were playing over their heads up until NLCS Game 2.
I think if TBS, Fox, et al had a favorite in the NL going in, it would have to be St. Louis. they didn’t suddenly switch to the Dodgers when that was out the window, but instead had to find a new team to prop up. fortunately for them, it looks like they picked a good one even though many people picked the Dodgers (Philly was also my choice to be in the WS after I saw how the Cardinals performed in the first couple games).

Yeah, it was St Louis in the first round. What did you think of the Phillies last year in the WS?
I don’t remember specifics of the games but I have this vague memory that they weren’t all that great, that the Angels or several other AL teams could have beaten them, but I don’t remember how well the Rays played.
