Why is Torii so sad?

So I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed this... Torii Hunter was so fired up the entire way through the ALDS against Boston. They win and make it to the ALCS in NY and ever since, Torii has has a look on his face that I can only describe as absolute depression. I have not seen him smile a single time since Boston, and have only seen him hanging his head as though he faces an inevitable defeat.

In Monday's game, there was a home run hit over his head in dead center. Torii ran to the wall where Nick's memorial is and leaned against the wall for several seconds, as though he was apologizing to Nick for the impending loss.

This is not how it should be! Torii is a great player and has the ability to turn it on for this team at any given time if he starts to believe again.

Bring back that fire Torii, we believe in you!

Yeah but

I think I’ve seen this change in his demeanor since the 1st game against the Yankees. Not sure how else to describe it..

Well, I see it differently.

I actually agree with the poster, Neo. I think you are very observant Neo. I noticed the gesture after Posada’s homer on Monday. He seemed unusually dejected, instead of Okay, let’s come back and get them.

I also thought his AB against Rivera was VERY unlike him. He usually attacks the ball in those situations. Instead he took a perfect pitch to hit and then with two strikes swung limply and an outside pitch and ground out weekly to first. He actually swung with one hand on that one. I know how angry I was about that half inning and I think you all shared my anger there (not just at Torri but at the whole team for not scoring there);

We did show grit and perserverance to come back and win that game. That was great, indeed. But like Neo said , Torri didn’t look or sound the same. In the post game interview clip I saw Hunter talked about it being one of the best games he’d ever experienced, as if he were a fan watching and not a key pivotal player in the game itself. It was strange.

I do not claim to know WHY Hunter is dejected. Despite some struggles in key RISP situations he has gotten a couple of hits in this series and does not appear to be completed out of sync. Maybe he is just pressing a little bit, wanting to succeed so badly that he is trying to hard.

One thing I can say is there is not a lack of desire on his part. I just know Torrii wants it as bad as anyone. And he is a true leader on this team. I have tremendous respect for Torrii as a baseball player and for what I know about him as a person. I don’t know exactly what is going on behind the scenes, but I DO AGREE with the Fan post that he appears somewhat dejected/down. He sounds like it to, if not in his words then in his tone of voice and timbre.

Agree--thought I was the only one who noticed....

I think Torii just wants it (the WS) so bad, he is pressing. Add to that, the frustration of the horrible umpiring and lack of hitting and all the defensive mistakes. Difficult but not impossible to overcome.
Baseball is a frustrating game…went on a stadium tour a year ago with my son. The concrete walls between the clubhouse and dugout have many, many chips where players have smacked it with bats….“snaps” from players about to lose it. There’s a punching bag too for the players to use, where cameras can’t see it, installed after Brian Downing broke his hand punching the concrete wall.

I was right there Monday night

I saws the look on his face after that home run. He looked discouraged. They just fought back to take the lead only to give it up with one swing of the bat.

This mind set is what is killing the whole team.

I have nothing important to say.

I agree with Neo...

I have not been able to figure out what is wrong with Torii this series.

He has popped off uncharacteristically about his own team and then followed it up with crap for his own performance. Put your money where your mouth is or just shut the hell up and play! Let your actions speak loudly…and thus far they have…unfortunately for us, he has sucked vs the Yankees.

I for one, have been rather disgusted with Torii’s actions since the Boston series ended. This is not the leader I have seen in the past. Buck up Torii, this thing ain’t over unless you keep playing like you have been…

Miss you Nick...! RIP

Another thing.....

I just heard a sound bite (apparently from last night) in which Torii praised A-Rod and added that “I wish he was on my team.” Well, we all know A-Rod is a great player, but we don’t need our team leader saying it in the press. He could think it but he shouldn’t be saying it.

Torii, I love you man, but that’s not good for our mojo. You also heaped praise on Sabathia prior to Game 1 when you should have been talking about how we were gonna get this guy, or at least said nothing at all. The time to praise your opponent is AFTER they have beaten you, not while the series is still going on. We as fans can do that, it’snot the same. But the players (and particularly our team leader) shouldn’t be doing that. It doesn’t send a good message. It sounds like he (and correspondingly, the team as a whole) is already defeated when he says that stuff.

Come on Torii, snap out of it.

I think you are reading too much into that..

He is a talkative and friendly guy. I don’t think he’s showing anybody up. He is respecting that A-Rod is completely dominating this series.

By comparison, Derek Jeter says all sorts of nice things about the Angels before, during, and after every series with the Angels. He is very vocal about his respect for the Angels. It’s almost to the point of a man-crush.

Don’t read too much into it. We don’t know how the other Halos will take hearing that. Fact remains that they need to hit the dang ball and having A-Rod in their lineup would solve a lot of their woes.

I love this team.

Maybe

Maybe you’re right and it is really not indicative of a defeated attitude. All I know is that it doesn’t SOUND GOOD. I certainly don’t think he should be ripping his opponent. I just think with the situation they are in the Angels need to believe in themselves. They certainly ARE capable of beating the Yankees. I guess that rather than this statement I’d like to hear Torii say something along the lines of we just have to relax and play our game, we’re good enough to beat these guys, etc.. That’s all.

I can agree with that.

The halos DESPERATELY NEED some hitting.

I love this team.

He's sad because he only made a positive impact in 1 game this post season

game 1, alds

dude has shriveled up in every risp chance he’s had since then, been making horrible throws, booting balls, and making baserunning mistakes.

i’d be sad too.

Not to mention, his locker mate is getting benched again, despite out hitting everyone in the post season, for maicer “error” izturis, while the nothings of figgins, abreu, rivera, hunter, and morales all get to play uninterrupted – despite howie outhitting them all in the second half of the season.

YEEEHAAAAAW

It’ll just take one more statement homer like that get the Angels ready for another three game winning streak.

It could happen!

Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

I swear I wasn't drunk when I wrote that sentence.

uh....

maybe you should kept the drunk excuse

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

by Moondoggy on Oct 21, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

sad

the reason for his sadness is he has played like shit except for game 1 of the ALDS. He wants to put the team on his back and carry them, and he has not been able to do it.

He will snap out of it and get it rolling the next three games of this series and carry this team.

I believe that we can take the next two games and we will beat CC in game 7. We are going to have the chance to see him 3 times in 10 days.

This thing aint over. Lackey will come up huge tomorrow and our outfield will wake the fuck up and start producing. We can easily beat Pettite in game 6 and game 7 anything can and will happen.

YES WE CAN, the fun is about to begin.

R.I.P. Nick, you are missed!

Let's also not forget

The Yankees offense hasn’t been doing much either, save this last game against Palmer.
Teixiera is more likely to wake up than Rivera, Hunter, Figgins, Abreu,

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Oct 21, 2009 3:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why

is Teixiera more likely to “wake up” than the last four?

If I recall, Teixiera has the lowest season BA of any of the five and would therefore statistically be the least likely to come alive.

by shiftyeyedgoat on Oct 21, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

because he is a much better hitter than those 4

and he has absolutely no pressure to produce because roids bats behind him.
he also didn’t struggle through september.

but hey, i’m all for being wrong. it’s what i hang my hat on when posturing on the internet

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Oct 21, 2009 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's the point of that last sentence?

Are you saying that your fanposts are disingenuous and your comments are merely posturing?

Clarification please.

Torii was happy today.

Smiling after he scored in the 7th.

He looks like the old Torii again

He was smiling and being humorous in the postgame interview. Maybe all it took was a W.

In any case, it’s good to have the old Torii back.
