What's up with the neck thingies??

When did the memo go out to MLB pitchers that they had to wear those braided necklaces?  What am I missing?  Is there some tradition at hand?  Who started it, and when?  Yes, it's a stupid question, but this fashion sort of sneaked up on me, and I'd like to know if there is any rhyme or reason behind it?   I've noticed that some are leather, and others look like vinyl or something.  Is that the PETA version?  Anybody know?  Guess?

Phiten titanium necklaces

A fad.

You know how you can go to a drug store and buy magnets to place all over your body so they can do mystical voodoo stuff to make your body work better? Yeah, they’re basically that.

It could happen! Let's do this for Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, and Henry Pearson.

by AlanFalcon on Oct 21, 2009 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

My youngest child worked for one of those magnet companies answering the phones.

She was so appalled by the jacked-up prices and the people eager to buy this junk that she started looking for another job about a week in, even though they paid her very well and treated her well. They gave her stuff sold by the company and one of the things she brought over was a water bottle, like you’re given at conventions. The price was nearly $40, because it had a magnet in the lid.

They sold shoes and jewelry and beds and chairs; it was an MLM, and from her description they were sailing dangerously near the legal description of a pyramid.

THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!

This question gets asked a lot.

They’re called phiten necklaces. They are actually titanium. They are a Japanese product that is supposed to get blood flowing at a steady pace, sort of like a balance bracelet.

In my opinion, its all in the head.

EPIC, in fact.

:-D

RIP Nick Adenhart.

He has one

as a certain type of ring.

Nick, you will always be an Angel. And you will be missed.

The second slide in on that official website is plenty of reason to never go near one of those.

there are some other kinds

that use either holograms or have some mineral with “magical” properties on in or embedded within to give it super powers. to me these are even more bizarre.

the MLB-licensed ones you see players wearing in droves are definitely the Phiten ones though. they’ve been popular for 3 or 4 years, and at first drove me mad because no commentator ever really explained them, you couldn’t make out any logo on tv, and I’d never seen them in any store to figure out what the hell they were for.

No baseball fashion trend has ever been cool.

Ball players always seem to be about 5 years behind the times. I mean, the mustache lasted well into the 90’s in baseball, and the goatee is still going strong. Lame fratboy tattoos are hitting the scene now – barbed wire, flames, Napoli’s plumerias…

No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

by Rally Manatee on Oct 22, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

lol @ barbed wire, too true

that made sense around 1996-2000:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115624/

the Josh Hamilton flames are by far the worst though. it’s like uhhh dude? are you a circa 1997 NASCAR ride driven by Jeff Gordon, or a baseball player?

The saddest part is his lame tats almost ruined his life.

Those bro flames are what led to his crack addiction. It was his tattoo artist that turned him on to coke. They say you can’t erase the past. Well, he’s done his best to turn his former evils into good, but he sure as hell can’t erase that stupid ink.

No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

by Rally Manatee on Oct 22, 2009 11:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Lasers can erase those.

I lived near Oakland and there was a program that helped ex-gang members get rid of their tattoos. A guy I worked with had had it done and the work was impressive; this was more than 10 years ago, so I expect the process has improved.

True.

An ex gang member went to my church for a while, and he was going through the treatments. He had them all over his face and everywhere. He said it was more painful than getting the tats in the first place.

No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

I plead the AYSO/CLUB approach on this one.

Fuck jewelry in sports.(period period period)…..

It has no place…I hate it unless it is a tribute….Fuck religion, bling, and anything else that is not cancer or charity related.

Just Say No 2 Puka unless you are Kurt Suzuki, Shane Vic. or company. You will thank me later in life. Peace out

by Funke5ive on Oct 22, 2009 1:00 AM PDT reply actions

the thing is

now half the jewelry out there is hiding behind a “cause” (like breast cancer, etc). it’s just a very very creative way to sell a lot more crap, and donate like 3% of your profits “after tax” to some “charity”, who will spend 60% of it on actual cancer research. it’s gotten totally ridiculous.

necklace

I remember the good old days when the batter would complain to the umpire and the pitcher would have to remove it. How I miss good old baseball days.

by Baylorsgroove on Oct 22, 2009 1:10 AM PDT reply actions

yeah good ol' days

it’s all plastic and crap now though. back in the day it was all shiny gold bling

What's the difference between this and chicken bone voodoo?

Maybe Pedro Cerrano should have worn one of these instead…

by sothball on Oct 22, 2009 10:59 AM PDT reply actions

one will hold your kids' homework to your fridge

and the other is a chicken bone.

Here's my rhyme about it:

The baseball players they wear those necklaces
they don’t look hot just like braces
The players they always come up with a new fad
But no matter what they never play bad.
They wear cool clothes and drive a nice car
you’ll always see them in the hottest new bar.
They put on their hats and head out on the field
Then they warm up, they got this game sealed.

Ok, so that was more like a rap. But you got my point. The necklaces are stupid. :P

Some people are like Slinkies. They're good for nothing, but they make you happy every time you push them down the stairs.

Snake oil

It’s so lame, the company pays players to wear the snake oil necklaces. Naive morons drop big dollars on it thinking it’s something really special.

by Trooper86 on Oct 22, 2009 4:14 PM PDT reply actions

If I recall, the first guy who was pitching this "technology" was slapped - TWICE - by the FTC for fraud.

Gettign pro athletes to wear this hokum is the very best marketing.

You too can be a baseball media analyst! Just don't allow your need to be wrong in public to get in the way of your ignorance.

by Stirrups on Oct 23, 2009 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Frankly, if an ad would say "As worn by AJ Burnett and Brian Fuentes"

That might kill the fad stone dead.

The Phiten necklaces are pretty cheap on E-bay

Bought one for my son as a gag gift…..and one for this frumpy mom too. Told son it would give me super-magical powers, make me tall and beautiful, and I could pitch too….he is still laughing.
After Josh Beckett’s meltdown back in April while wearing one I don’t think they work too well to “center” you, or “balance your energy” Total crock IMHO.
