Do not go gentle into that good night.
I'm so proud of this team I can't even begin (I'm drunk as a motherfucker so i will).
I've never had a season affect me as much as 2009 and I go back as far as Hendu destroying my hopes and dreams as a 6 year old.
Nick died a block from my house and that set the tone of the season. I cried for days. No TBS commercial can commercialize the feeling of April 9th, driving to work, realizing that the kid you saw last night is gone.
The season goes on.
I yell at Sosh. I yell at Figgy. I yell at Rivera.
I had so much fun. There was so much emotion in this season and I'm thankful to be a part of it.This team battled, hence the cliche thomas quote. These guys didn't punk out, they BATTLED. All season long.
Mat, thanks for running a great blog. It was an unforgettable season. Nick would have enjoyed it, and I KNOW he would have gotten into Andy's head if they went toe to toe.
Season is over, what are you guys most proud of for the 09 team?

Nice controlled anger ventilation...
I am the most proud of the team battling through that terrible start and just hauling ass past the Texas Rangers. The team played solid baseball in spite of many big guns being hurt during the season.
Also, a little shout out to:
Kendry Morales — Amazing, amazing breakout season. Wow
Erick Aybar — Cannot believe how delicious this crow tastes, after wishing you would just go away so Brandon Wood or Izturis (if he could stay healthy) could start. You made me a believer
Matt Palmer — Where did YOU come from? Wow, what an amazing performance from an “unknown.” Thanks!
While a disappointing end to the season is the harsh reality, the way this team battled in 2009 was unlike any Angel team I have ever seen. Even the 2002 group did not face this kind of adversity. To take this ALCS to six games was an amazing accomplishment.
Thanks Arte Moreno. Thanks Mike Scioscia. Thanks Tony Reagins. Thanks to the ENTIRE TEAM.
Thank you for a wonderful 2009.
I love this team.

Aybar = pure awesomeness..
and the new haircut brings him to a new level of awesomeness.
Palmer, BEASTLY. Even if you got teed off on during game (?) of the ALCS (i blocked that shit out of my memory..), this soon-to-be landscaper is an 11 game winner in the SHOW…a testament to our offense? Possibly… but this old timer (30? hah) helped us out plenty to get to the ALCS.

Different than last year
and not because we finally beat Boston. Last year was frustrating, and it literally took weeks to get over. Tonight’s 8th inning was frustrating. The umpiring was frustrating. But the game, and the series was not. Despite the gaffes, it really was a great series.
there are things about this postseason that I feel great about. we didn’t play like we could have, but he we toed the line against a great team, and that is what competition is about. I would loved to have gone on to the WS (I had reserved seats for Game 1), but stretching out the ALCS, and making every game (but 1) close felt very satisfying, even if we ended up on the wrong side of good.
This postseason won’t grate on me for weeks. In fact, tonight, I feel pretty good about next year. Rev’s right, it’s going to be an exciting offseason.
Tomorrow, I am calling DirecTV and cancelling my service. I took on debt to watch the season every single night this year. We ONLY watched TV for Angels baseball, and are not interested in anything else. I don’t even care about another east coast WS. But, I’m counting down until Spring Training, and when I can turn my service back on. By then, I’ll be debt free and ready to take on some more!

small silver lining. A blemish on that silver lining, though, is that ticketmaster still keeps their portion of your payment. I’ve got nearly a grand coming back to poppa tonight. But, that is $1000 less great baseball I could have watched in an Angels dominated World Series.
I love this team.

And, to extend the concern...
As a life-long computer operations guy, I know that the Angels and Stub Hub need something like two seconds to push the button and maybe ten minutes to process the refund report. Then maybe 10 minutes to send that batch process file over to their bank.
And I know that the bank can get all that processing turned around and accounts paid within 24 hours.
And I know that Amex can recognize that payment same day.
But, all these entities are making interest off holding on to my money, so I doubt that I shall see my refund until December.

For SEASON TICKETS Angels Baseball holds the money until 60 days after the conclusion of the World Series...
kiss that money good bye until 2010, yo.
I had season seats in 2007 & 2008 and the early playoff exits meant a lot of money in the Angels’ hands for a long period of time.
This year, I bought my playoff tickets on-line via Ticketmaster and, as I said, I already got my cash back from the cancelled ALDS Game 5. I expect the WS tickets to be refunded shortly. It will not go into November, I am fairly sure, as I had WS tix for 2008, as well. That came back right after the Halos were eliminated.

Mine too. Including the service fee. Case closed (for me.)
Amex was listing as my bill being due on 11/4. Since that is Wednesday, paying this back directly to Amex was very timely, and much appreciated. I can only imagine what I would have been going through if I had purchased some of those $2500 seats for clients via my work, then seeing the series cancelled and knowing that no expense reimbursement was coming. So I would be sitting on a $10,000 Amex bill and freaking out. (My Amex card is a corporate card, and my expense re-imbursements go directly to that card also. So I would have been Ok had the tickets been useful.)

I am also very proud of the 2009 Angels
I’m proud that the Angels fought back froma devestating loss of a young man in Adenhart. I’m proud they fought back from a 29-29 start and proved to the world that we won’t go down easily. I’m proud that the Angels never folded even when both Hunter and Guerrero went down. I am also especially proud to have watched the team beat the Red Sux and I feel honored to have seen the Angels career of Lackey, Guerrero and Figgins.
by ryanfea on Oct 25, 2009 11:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, for starters, the loss of Adenhart brought this team together
….in a way that might not otherwise have been possible. I think they all learned alot about themselves. I liked the fact that Sosh always kept that in perspective. Everytime I heard him answer an interviewers question it went to the heart of the matter: how difficult and really unimaginable it must be for Nick’s family.
On the field it was great to see the way the took it to the Red Sox. Inside, I must say, I KNEW they would kick their ass. I just knew as a TEAM they wouldn’t let anything stop them. Yes, alot did happen in the Yankee series that was unexpected, or perhaps somewhat expected. But again, I felt we showed great courage and determination. That Game 2 loss could have sent weaker teams packing. But we came back in Game 3 and fought to victory despite being behind early and then losing the lead. Mathis was awesome!
Going to Game 5 was great. Man I was pissed at Sosh for taking Lackey out and for not staying with Weaver, but again, great heart and passion to come back and get those 3 runs in the 7th. That might have been the loudest I’ve heard that Stadium other than that Oct. day in 2002 when Adam Kennedy launched three homeruns in one game!
Really, most of all this team showed what it means to play for something larger than oneself. Without naming names I think their are Yankees who could benefit from this lesson.
There’s alot to love about this team — I guess that’s why it is hard to see them lose. And while they may have lost, they are certainly NOT losers in my book.

Proud that we found another way to win
Almost every player took a step forward offensively this year to make up for surprisingly poor pitching through most of the year. Kudos to the pitching staff and to the team for coming together in the second half and battling throughout the post-season. This team was resilient throughout the regular season and showed a lot of heart in comebacks Game 3 of the DS and Game 5 of the CS.
Most of all, thanks for being such an easy team to root for. It’s so nice to have likable players who are passionate about the game playing for the team you love. Certainly gave me a lot of thrills this season and while it’s tough after the immediate disappointment of this loss, I know we’ll be back next year.
If this was Vlad/LackeyChone’s last game(s) as Angels, you guys were some of the best players this franchise has ever had and I’ll always root for you guys when you aren’t playing against us. Thanks to Arte Moreno, Mike Scioscia, and the rest of the Angels front office/coaches for another great season. With the personnel we have running this organization, it’s only a matter of time before we get another ring.

Was absolutely gut-wrenching what happened and the team and the Angels community did a great job of honoring his memory and ensuring a legacy that will never be forgotten. The team certainly did him proud on the field this year as well.

Usually after a playoff failure, I'm pretty depressed/sad/upset...
But I’m not really feeling that this year.
These guys battled, and they battled hard. They made some errors, but it wasn’t because of lack of effort.
Considering everything they’ve gone through this season, I think they can hold their heads high.

Any baseball fan who is not impressed with this year's Angels team is an idiot.
To battle back from the loss of a young, promising player as a team and also to beat a raucous and talented group like the Rangers is astounding. Not to mention sweeping the Sox in the ALDS.
Of course I’m disappointed they couldn’t get past the Yanks, but all in all, I am very proud to call myself an Angels fan. This is it for me, I don’t follow other sports, so I wrap myself completely in this team. I can be the most negative person in the world when they lose, but that’s just because I’m totally enamored by them.
So, an awesome season marred by a few boneheaded errors and some bad calls, but most of all, the loss of Nick Adenhart. This team deserves much, much praise.
The time is out of joint; oh cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right.
by chairmanofthebar on Oct 25, 2009 11:34 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
I'm proud of the whole team.
After Nick died, they played so poorly until mid-June that I thought the season was finished before it began. They surprised me. Sosh and Torii were rocks when the team needed rocks, and when Sosh kicked their butts after that loss in June (was that to Tampa Bay?) they turned it around and played like champions.
I was at that game on August 11 when every starter was above .300, when Figgins led the league in runs, and the power hitters were all injured so the little guys were just killing everyone.
The Angels did amazing things this year.

Vlad Guerrero
In the midst of tonight’s pain/frustration…I can’t help but think about how proud I am of Vlad Guerrero. Obviously, this has been a really tough year to watch Vlad as an Angels fan. The season started with a bit of hope coming off his surgery that we might see him return to form in a few areas…which never really panned out.
Vlad had more than a few AB’s this post-season that made me proud. Tonight’s finale…definitely included. Vlad quietly (and maybe for the only time in my memory) was more wisely patient at the plate than I’ve ever seen. He missed plenty of RBI chances…but he also set the table more than a few times in key situations. He wanted a title and played like it.
But, I’m not really here to argue about Vlad’s dominance or even compare him to others…I’m proud of Vlad for what he has meant to me as an Angel fan.
If tonight was the last time I’ll see #27 in red, here’s the big picture things I’ll remember:
- his swing
- his smile
- laughing with my wife watching him run
- his quiet, even demeanor and how it fit so well with Soth
- his amazing arm
- that he’s the first player I taught my son about
but maybe better than any of these thoughts, I’ll remember the day I heard we had signed Vlad Guerrero. I was in Kitale, Kenya and my brother and I screamed in disbelief for an hour. With no disrespect to Arte (who I could gush about too) or Soth, this team as we are known today has been built by Vlad. Bringing legitimacy. Bringing fans. Bringing hope.
There’s a hundred tough things that can and should be said about him as we head into this tough off-season…but am I proud to be a fan of Vladimir Guerrero…hell yeah.

Wow.
What a great post that really slaps me in the face. A lot of times RECENTLY, I have taken Vlad for granted and have lost respect for him. Your post reminded me just how great, how VALUABLE he was to this organization. I will miss Vladimir. He was something very special. I sincerely hope that Arte gets sentimental and figures out a way to keep Vladdy here, economically, but still somehow financially rewarding for a deserving Vladimir Guerrero.
I love this team.

DOMINANCE.
I mean, the guy might be 50 years old for all we know… he hit way over 300 post season, had clutch ABs, some GAME CHANGING home runs…WHAT MORE DO WE WANT?? (running the bases properly maybe..shut up).
Im sitting here, watching the game, and wondering why its ok to think in terms of getting rid of vlad… will he command big money? no.. but i THINK the angels should consider vlad for decent money… the guy PRODUCES.

Because teams dont want an aging player who cant run and can pretty much only DH, I imagine most teams wont even make Vlad an offer. That being said, those fools are missing out! Nice wake up call to everybody that had been cursing & calling out Vladdy lately
We’re going to miss more than just his big bat in the lineup. He gave this team so much more than just a guaranteed 30 HR & 100 RBI stat each season. A lot of people like to forget that he once had the opportunity to sign with the Dodgers for more money than Arte was offering, but Vlad chose instead to go with us since he felt the most at home here. Of all our soon to be free agents, he’s the one I know we’ll miss the most.

Re-signing Vlad
Something else to think about. Vlad brings fans to the game. Even if he is declining as some think (me i’m not sold on that), fans come out to see him play. And we have to have fans fill those seats so we can pay our players.

Dylan Thomas, BTW
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
