Who will be an Angel next season?
Who are the Angels going to resign? Chone, Abreu, Lackey, Big Daddy? My 5 year old will be crushed if we lose no. 27. I'd personally like to keep Vlad as our DH and allow him retire a Halo and hopes goes to Cooperstown with a Halo.
Will we be able to pick up more BP help? Will Shieldsy ever be the same. Will Arrendondo see action in 2010? DO we have to keep Fuentes?
Scoic, Tony and Arte will take good care of us, but what do other Halo fans think?
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Count on losing #27
For what he can provide while occupying the DH slot, the moment he asks for too much, he will be shown the door

Zero would be too much
Just say no to Vladdy. Even if he signed for zero, Scioscia would STILL insist on making him the cleanup batter. There are numerous better, more effective options, than Vladdy.
GA had a better year in 08 than Vlad had in 09, and HE was shown the door.
Hasta la Vista Vladdy.
by R.Munkee on Oct 26, 2009 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vladdy also had half the ABs he usually does and put up about the same value
Over the course of a full season of ABs, I estimate he would have replicated 2008 or 2007.

Over a full season.....
if he will stay healthy for an entire season – ever again – he would have projected out to 22 HRs, and 70 RBIs – hardly worthy of re-signing – especially as a DH only “cleanup” batter.

maybe Abreu too. I have my doubts about anyone else. I wonder if Oliver will retire. He could return again as well.

My premature plan:
2009 payroll: $113.7 million
2010 committed payroll: $59.95
-Let Figgins and Guerrero walk
-Re-sign Lackey (6 years, $93 million), Abreu (2 years, $18 million), and Oliver (2 years, $7 million)
-Sign Jason Bay or Matt Holliday (6 years, $90 million)
-Find a trading partner (eating salary) for GMJ, getting relief help
-Move Wood to 3rd base
C- Napothis
1B – Morales
2B – Kendrick
SS – Aybar
3B – Wood
OF – Hunter
OF – Abreu
OF – Bay/Holliday
DH -Rivera
SP – Lackey
SP – Kazmir
SP – Weaver
SP – Saunders
SP – Santana
BP – Shields, Palmer(?), Arredondo, Fuentes, Oliver, Jepsen, Bulger, etc.
Bench – Izturis, Willits and a bunch of random dudes who we choose to sign or call up
Puts the payroll at about $103 million BEFORE raises go out to the various arbitration dudes. Doable?

I don't see this happening in Anaheim
Re-sign Lackey (6 years, $93 million)
Three plus option? Maybe. But not for six, especially with the cracks in Lackey’s physical armor seen in the last two seasons, and the fact that he isn’t a junkballer who can continue to work until he’s 53. When the wheels really begin to come off his wagon, I don’t know how/if he’ll morph into a pitcher.
He showed great competitive character in the playoffs and sent his stock soaring, but I don’t think Arte would sign any pitcher who is already 31 for six more guaranteed years.
In terms of other costs the team will need to budget for, I expect they’ll attempt to sign Saunders to the sort of extension Santana took, and that will give them three starters locked in for the next few seasons. We can safely bet that Boras client Weaver won’t sign any extensions, but he is under control through the end of the 2012 season, which gives a tremendous nucleus for the team to build upon. Whether it is Lackey, or the team trades for another player (like Halladay, Haren or another lead pitcher), there is a solid foundation here.
Lackey is important, but not at any cost, and he may well find another team (or teams, plural) willing to bid more money/years than the Angels.

No, Lackey didn't burn any bridges
Scioscia, I am sure, appreciated the fire and intensity Lackey was presenting. Scioscia himself said he was torn between keeping Lackey in or bringing in a lefty to turn Teixeira around.
He’s had better strategies, as it turned out.

Lackey leaves because Sosh yanked him. That may have been the final straw.

Bay. . . didn’t his team get swept out too?? Yes, they did. Must have been real clutch. Wood? Boy K. Lackey is going nowhere near the Halos now. Kazmir . . . washed up at 25?? Oh I am sure EVERY team wants to trade for a 11 million dollar 4th outfielder. TOTALLY DUDE. Who actually hit a HR and had a few RBI other than Kendrick. by Big Bad, 'Vlad'! on Oct 26, 2009 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It bothered me that you couldn't construct a coherent argument
Will we finish better than 3rd?
Seattle is mediocre, Oakland was atrocious for the most part, and Texas had to have a massive and sudden aberration of a year just to finish 10 games behind. And you’re thinking 3rd?
Holliday sucked in the AL west if you didn’t notice.
I noticed him “sucking” in a terrible lineup (and by sucking, I mean OPSing .831), in a losing environment, with no protection, and no hope. Make of that what you will.
oh, and he DROPPED A FUCKING 3RD OUT in game 2, on a way to being swept.
And Bill Buckner had the game-winning error roll through his legs in the midst of a 2,715 hit career. But yes, you’re right…Matt Holliday got swept, not the St. Louis Cardinals.
And you didn’t like FIggy.
I don’t? Damn, could have fooled me. I thought I did, but I guess not if you say otherwise.
I didn’t say I don’t like him. I said don’t re-sign him. He’ll cost more than he’s worth, and I think the lineup can succeed without him. But if he was re-signed, I would actually support the move, too. Even after his abortion of a playoff run.
Bay. . . didn’t his team get swept out too?? Yes, they did. Must have been real clutch.
Yeah, that Albert Pujols guy sucks, too.
Wood? Boy K.
No one who has ever struck out a lot has had a successful career. That’s why no one knows who the hell Bobby Bonds, Reggie Jackson, Ryan Howard, Willie Stargell, Adam Dunn, or Sammy Sosa are.
Wait, what?
Lackey is going nowhere near the Halos now.
Thanks, Joe Urbon.
Kazmir . . . washed up at 25??
Sounds about accurate. What tipped you off? The 1.73ERA with the Angels? Or the career ERA equal to Lackey’s?
Oh I am sure EVERY team wants to trade for a 11 million dollar 4th outfielder. TOTALLY DUDE.
You must have missed the part where I said we’d eat most of his salary.
Who actually hit a HR and had a few RBI other than Kendrick. Oh, yah Vlad. the guy everyone wants to ‘let go’.
Considering the Angels just became the FIRST TEAM IN MAJOR LEAGUE HISTORY to have 11 hitters with 50+ RBIs, I’m gonna go out and guess that Kendrick and Vlad weren’t the only guys with a “few RBI.”
And if you fielded my above lineup, you’d get more than 140 home runs from the 1-9 guys alone for 2009.

I don't think Vlad will sign
If he is made to be a DH. He really likes playing in the outfield, and I don’t think he’ll sign if he knows that’s all he’s going to do. As for Fuentes, I’d say trade him. Perhaps use Jepsen as the closer, he’s already proven that he can be lights out. If not, then I’d pursue another closer that is.

Moves
I hate to say it but unless Vlad gives us a major discount, something like 2 yrs at 12 mill he’s gone. He even said himself he can’t hit the inside fastball anymore.
Abreau wants more than 16 mill for 2 years, at 36 is he worth that.
Figgins is gone, look for the Cards to sign him.
Oliver will retire.
Lackey will be offered 4 yrs at around 50-60 mill. I doubt he takes it and he walks.
I recommend going after Jason Bay instead of Holladay. I like his power.
Not sold on Wood at third, but we have no choice.
Have to stick with Fuentes for one more year, sorry.
I like trading little sarge for relief help, got anything in mind?
If we can’t resign Abreau we are short an outfielder or DH, we could be hurting.
Only good thing about next year, Texas has no money to improve. We are challenged but the starting pitching holds on we take the div. for a fourth year.

He had a poorer year in 09 than GA had in 08. GA was not offered a contract and wound up signing for one year at $2.5 mm. Vlad will be fortunate to find a team that will better that deal. And it WON’T be the Angels.

lots of tough choices
Lots of tough choices, but they start with the observation: can we win by resigning the same set of guys or is it time to make some changes?
We couldn’t win with Figgy and Vladdy this year. Can we do it with them next year?
Is Lackey ready to roll at the back end of his career or would we be be signing a Carl Pavano who is ready to break down? Is Lackey’s injury issues for the last two seasons an aberration or a preview of coming attractions?
Can Abreu keep it up for two more years?
I think the team will be competitive no matter what they do, but Moreno & Reagins, etc. have some tough choices, especially when you add the spector of Dallas McPherson. All of a sudden, it’s not so easy to just let Figgy walk because your future at 3rd base is coming from the minors.
Vladdy is also a tough choice. Can he learn to control himself as his legendary hand-eye coordination lessens with age, i.e. learn to be a more diciplined hitter? Is he willing to live with his limitations as a DH?
The final issue is do the Angeles even have control, i.e. Do Lackey, Vladdy, & Figgins want to stay or are they ready to head to other pastures? I think Abreu clearly wants to stay, but is simply holding for a bit larger contract that he probeble deserves. I also think that he’s likely worth the risk for two years.
Okay, so what do I think will happen?
I think Figgy will be in solid demand, so the price of keeping him won’t jibe with the risks of going with the 3rd baseman of the future. My guess is that we’re going to throw the dice with Brandon Wood, which is somewhat of a double risk because it also likely puts Aybar at lead-off. Can he develop the plate dicipline to take walks and improve his OBP. He certainly has the potential.
I think we’ll resign Abreu.
I also think we’ll be competitive with John Lackey, but won’t know for awhile whether he’ll be here. We won’t just let him go unless there’s a real confidence that Kelvim Escobar will recover. But there’s clearly no guarantee we can resign him.
Finally, I think the idea to give Vlad a shot at revitalizing himself will win out, but that a deal will have to happen sooner rather than later, i.e. we’ll want to know if we’re going in that direction or whether we have to take a shot at a Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.
Those are my calls. We’ll see what happens. It’s gonna be an interesting winter. If I had to make a call, it think we’ll end up losing Figgins and Lackey, but keep Vladdy and Abreu. We won’t be willing to compete for Figgy. Lackey will get a ridiculous offer that we won’t be willing to match. We’ll reach agreement with Abreu, and Vladdy will come to his senses and resign for a relative bargain, possibly because there’s no other interest anyway.

The problem with Bay and Holliday
Holliday is represented by Boras, and I think it will be one very cold day in Hell before Arte steps off the curb in front of a bus driven by Boras again.
Bay is represented by a different agent, but there will be three teams collectively fighting over these two men: The Red Sox, the Yankees and the Cardinals.
The latter needs a bat to protect Pujhols in the lineup, the Yankees will be looking for a bat/defensive presence to replace Damon/Matsui (and Nady will still be recovering from surgery), and the Red Sox will be looking to either sign Bay or replace him with Holliday.
The Angels won’t want to get into a dog fight for these players with these other three teams, and I simply don’t see them entering into negotiations with Boras for Holliday, especially since his style is the antithesis of Arte’s (Boras drags everything out for weeks, Arte likes a quick kill).

Jason Bay
Yankees will sign Bay, because it gives them power in left field, and it takes the same power away from a suddenly anemic Red Sox lineup.
by Baylorsgroove on Oct 26, 2009 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nady
I also overlooked that Nady is under team control, and so should be in arbitration with the Yankees (or any team he might be traded to) this Winter.
In any event, it is a zero-sum game, and the Angels won’t figure to be in a rugby scrum for the right to sign Holliday and/or Bay. There will be too many teams chasing after those two for Arte’s liking.
Besides, Bay isn’t really a premiere defensive OF, just a stud bat. I don’t think Arte will pay the sort of $$$ Bay is expecting for a two-tool player.

Sosh build his teams on pitching, defense and timerly hitting.
That being said, I think it makes Lackey, Oliver and Abreu their prime targets. We need a number 1, I don’t think Kaz is ready for that yet, WTY? Maybe, but I trust Big John more. DO was the most solid reliever we had all year long, even at 39 next year he showed a ton of value this year. Abreu wants a 2 or 3 year deal, and IMO, he’s worth it. His power numbers are down again, but everything else was above average. He wont decline as bad as say a Vlad or an Ortiz.

power numbers
Abreau is not a power hitter. That season in Philly was an aberration. he is a solid .300 hitter who will drive in 100 runs a year. nothing wrong with that.
by Baylorsgroove on Oct 26, 2009 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's like GA, but he gets on base more often via walks.

What year in Philly was an aberration?
He slugged .530 with an average of 24 homers over a 6 year span, but never topped .554 or 31 homers. That sounds like consistent power to me. He never had an aberration year…he was just never Mark McGwire, but he DID have considerable power.

abreu and holiday
dont force a bad contract that doesnt fit long term. If we dont get the guys we specifically want, go into the season with Wood and Vlad short term or maybe even a chris pettit in the OF and then evaluate guys we can trade for mid-season to hold us over until next offseason.
if gary matthews has taught me anything, its that you CANNOT just sign a guy because you feel like you HAVE to sign someone before 2010. Sign the right guys at the right time, dont settle.

Ace?
Anyone feel like the Angels should focus on getting an ace? I’m kind of assuming Lackey won’t be coming back :(
by jessthelion on Oct 26, 2009 9:27 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Without Lackey
I think Weaver is primed and ready to take the #1 slot in the rotation if need be. He showed tremendous growth in both talent and maturity in 2009.
We should also expect he’ll be gone as a free agent in 2013. Until then, though, he has the makings of a front of the rotation stud, and he’s only getting better.

My thoughts too.
I was saying last offseason that the one thing WTY needed to get over was letting his emotions change him during a game. He needed to just absorb the bad luck and move on, which he did quite well this year.

Probably.
My hope was that by next year he would be good to assume Lackey’s position. But life woke him up and forced him to grow up a little quicker. Good for him (maturity), good for us (ace). It is too bad it took Nick’s death though, could you imagine them as 1-2 punch. Salivating.

I agree.
I don’t see the Angels spending the “AJ Burnet money” for Lackey. Worse case scenario, if no pitching is re-signed our starting rotation looks something like…
Weaver, and in no particular order: Saunders, Santana, Kazmir, and Palmer.
However if we could possible make a trade to Toronto for say: Saunders, Bell, Fuentes for Holiday, I’d say go for it.

I dunno about that...
Weaver has the worst GB/FB ratio in the majors and gets hammered by lefties. Not qualities you want out of a No. 1. He needs to add a pitch or do something to get more ground-balls before you could say he is a legit No. 1.
Right now, he is a very solid No. 3 and sketchier No. 2.
by Spird on Oct 26, 2009 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lackey is the number one priority.....
you need to keep the pitching intact, because we still struggle offensively.
Abreu is #2 prioritiy.
Vlad…..I’m not sure how much he has left. Everyone points to this supposedly great post season..I didn’t see it. He looks old to me.
Figgins….continues to be a bust in post season. It’s time for Brandon.

Out of 14 "hits"...
Vlad only made solid contact on 2, maybe 3 of them. Even his GW hit against Boston was an off the end of the bat dying quail that Ellsbury misjudged from Vlad’s flail, and by the time he recovered, it parachuted in in front of him. Vlad is now a squib and doink singles hitter, with occasional pop – kind of like Izturis.

I agree we need an ace, and Lackey is the guy, but, do you think Big John will come back after Sosh yanked him with Lack yelling to leave him in. I feel their will be a little anger left over.
I believe Oliver retires. He sees changes coming and at his age does not want to be part of a rebuilding team.
I honestly hope Vlad resigns for less because he wants to stay and his best chance of success will be here.
I will miss Chone, and we all will miss him as the 2010 season passes as Brandon Wood develops into the biggest flop since pancakes. You thought Mathis had bad numbers. Maybe we should resign Troy Glaus?

No love for B Wood.
Why? The only time he got consistant playing time was in Aug/Sep of ‘08. What did he do with consistant playing time you ask? Well he hit 4 HR in 86 AB’s, put over a full season that is roughly 29 HR. 10 RBI, over a 162 game period that’s roughly 73 (keep in mind he was hitting out of the 8 spot in the lineup). .255 BA, I’ll live with that for some pop. OPS around .700. I’m one of the many who think that if you give B Wood an actual shot, not a few games here and there, he will do big things. He just needs a legitimate shot.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon....
pulls off a Kendry type of transformation – not quite as productive, but a surprise, nonetheless. I would look for .270 BA, with 20+ HRs, and 70 RBIs. Actually, I’ll wager that Wood puts up better numbers than Vladdy does – wherever he’ll be doing his thing. ( Besides Anaheim.)

All the love for Abreu speaks volumes to the notion that modern hitters can be heavily influenced by proper coaching. It is not logically consistent that Abreu gets so much credit for the positive influence he has had on the offense, and Hatcher gets a pass.
We can do better. And better is now available.

Lackey, Chapman, Vlad, Oliver and more
Man, that 24 hour wait to post after signing up is maddening. This is my first post here. I usually post under this name on the Angels official page.
Anyway…here’s what I think:
1) Resign John Lackey. Devote all money and effort to this first and get it resolved as soon as possible. Pitching and D are crucial as the ALCS showed. Thank God he isn’t a Boras client.
2) Aggresively pursue Aroldis Chapman. If Lackey leaves we need a replacement for him. In fact this guy could even be better than Lackey at some point, so either way he is a bonus. Kendry Morales might be able to help in recruiting his fellow countryman and selling him on life in Anaheim. I’m surprised nobody else brought this up.
3) Resign Vladimir as a DH at a reduced price. He wants to say, can still hit, and has shown he can adjust by being more patient. Where else are we gonna get somebody who hits like he does?
4) Pursue Abreu as long as his demands remain reasonable. He was a benefit to our hitters but I think his lessons have been passed on. They won’t disappear if he goes elsewhere. Still, I’d like to see him back.
5) Resign Oliver. With Shields and Moesely back next year our bullpen will be much better with these 3 guys. I’d even look at Shields as a closer.
6) Replace Figgins with Aybar in the lineup and Wood at 3rd. We have to save money somewhere and Aybar can do all the things Figgins does and he’s faster. It’s also time to see what Wood can really do.
by Commander_Nate on Oct 27, 2009 5:56 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Here's a rebuttle (spelling?)
1.) Agree
2.) Chapman, right now, is a one pitch pitcher who probably wont even impact the club for 3 years. He could be amazing, but IMHO, he’s gonna end up as a bullpen stud.
3.) Agree
4.) Agree
5.) Shields isn’t a closer. Now Jepsen on the the other hand, has the type of nasty stuff to be a closer.
6.) Aybar at leadoff is a good idea, but his OBP is very BA heavy. Little Vlad needs to learn some patience on the quick.
Nick would be proud.

Two words
Aggresively pursue Aroldis Chapman. If Lackey leaves we need a replacement for him. In fact this guy could even be better than Lackey at some point, so either way he is a bonus. Kendry Morales might be able to help in recruiting his fellow countryman and selling him on life in Anaheim. I’m surprised nobody else brought this up.
Jose Contreras.
He was another can’t-miss Cuban defector who was supposed to have a miracle arm. The Yankees went nuts and signed him for fat money.
Seven years, three teams and $61M later, he has a record of 71-63, a WHIP of 1.37, twice led the AL in wild pitches and has a K:BB of just 2:1. Hardly a difference maker, nor one of the elite.
Don’t buy into the hype. Chapman has a lot to prove before he earns the sort of money you’re advocating laying at his feet.
BTW, the possible Morales/Chapman connection has already been discussed here, long ago—Morales doesn’t know him. Morales defected in 2004 when Chapman was just 16.

Surely he knows of him
Meaning Aroldis knows of Kendry from when Morales was a star in Cuba. They probably have some mutual friends or acquaintances from the Cuban Leagues.
His experience here adjusting to life in America and with the Angels could be something that would attract Chapman. I wasn’t implying they were friends necessarily, since there’s a 5 or 6 year age difference.
Of course he still needs to be proven and refined, but the potential is there. We should at least take a look.
by Commander_Nate on Oct 27, 2009 9:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Every team should take a look
What the Angels should not do is make signing Chapman its #2 priority in the offseason.
There is too much hype surrounding Chapman. Every team’s bullshit detector should be set very sensitively. The reluctance of Chapman’s agent to provide more than a bullpen session for teams to view should be the first warning sign.

Does the name Dice-K ring a bell. I would not risk it. Kid might be young, never know with the latin players. If we lose Lackey and get him at a decent price fine. But is he ready for the bigs?

Chapman.
Does the name Kendry Morales ring a bell? The Halos signed him with little knowledge. Kind of the same deal. I will agree with you, that Dice-K was way too much money. The Halos have to find a middle ground; if they overpay for Chapman, they may end up with a chapped ass.
