Vladimir Guerrero on staying in Anaheim
Vladimir Guerrero on staying in Anaheim as an Angel:
"I'm not thinking so much about the uncertainty, but I'm thinking about my mom and how comfortable she feels in Anaheim. That's always one thing that I'm going to think about regarding free agency. It would be very gratifying to continue to play with the guys I've known here and have gotten used to."
It sounds like Guerrero might be willing to take a huge paycut to stay in Angel red. In fact, I think that is probably the only way the Angels organization would be willing to keep him around. However, considering their actions over Garrett Anderson last year, the FO might pass despite the possibility of a paycut.
What do you think will transpire?

I think he'll stick here
For the right price, we keep him. Vlad isn’t GA, we should keep him in Angels red.

Vlad isn't GA? Maybe not, but not much better.
GA’s best 5 years before he started to decline – 99-03: 794 Games, 142 HRs, 559 RBIs
Vlad’s first 5 years, not including 09: 746 Games, 158 HRs, 566 RBIs
GA’s next year – 04: 112 Games, 14 HRs, 75 RBIs
Vlad in 09: 100 Games 15 HRs, 50 RBIs
( GA in 09: 135 " 13 " 61 " )( Just for comparison – and HE still plays in the OF.)
GA in 3 of his last 4 years ( 05-09 ) averaged 143 Games, 16 HRs, and 87 RBIs. In my humble opinion, GA, in spite of his ailments, was and still is, in better physical condition than Vlad.
GA’s 08 numbers weren’t good enough to warrant a contract, yet they were better than Vlad’s 09 numbers.
What makes anyone here believe – watching the way Vladdy walks and runs – that he could possibly play for even 2 more years? Someone here predicted he would have a year with 30 HRs, and 100+ RBIs. I will hereby predict that Vladdy doesn’t accumulate those totals over the rest of his career.
Another thing. Vladdy in the lineup is going to deprive good young players – who will undoubtedly produce better numbers, and have FAR more upside – of their natural development. Even if he signs a contract for less than GA did – $2.5mm, last year, he will still be a clog in the lineup, ( like he was this year.) hindering the futures of upcoming players with far better production upside. Let him go people – the Angels are going to.

Why cherrypick GA's best 5 years and compare them to Vlad's first 5?
And what’s the logic behind the statement that GA’s numbers in 08 were better than Vlad’s in 09?
GA in 08: .293/.325/.433.
Vlad in 09: .295/.334/.460.
by snowhor on Oct 28, 2009 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because they were at similar points of their careers at those ages.
GA in 08 = 84 RBIs, Vlad in 09 = 50
The main point here, is that GA was let go when he came to a similar point that Vlad is presently at.
Why would that front office philosphy change?
People around here post as is Vlad was God. GA has numerous Angels’ records that Vladdy will never match.
He was a fixture here FAR longer than Vladdy – yet he was allowed to walk.

"I'll take him as a low-price DH "
So, you’re going to clog up the DH position for 162 games, ( assuming he’s healthy most of the year, which is unlikely.) – knowing that Scioscia likes to give his players occasional rest, and also reserve the spot for his “walking wounded” – with a declining, primarily singles hitter, who will have stats like an 8 or 9 spot hitter, yet probably be plugged into the MOTO?
He wouldn’t be worth such an arrangement even if he was paid the league minimum. Stop drinking the Vladdy koolaid, people – he is done. Of his supposedly “great” postseason, only 2, maybe 3 of his 14 “hits” were solid. The rest, his usual assortment of squibs hits thru the IF, or dying quail flares to the shallow OF. Very Maicer Iztur’ish, if you ask me.

I love the guy
But his skills have been steadily declining for the last five years. It wasn’t just the injuries this last year – his slugging percentage has gone down every single year since 2004. Ditto his batting average. Add to the fact that his numbers are not very good as a DH, and it’s very difficult to justify keeping him.
BUT….he still may be better than anything else out there. My hunch is that Bay and Holliday stay put; after that, there’s a huge dropoff in OF/DH talent. Maybe Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon, or our own Bobby Abreu, but that’s about it. So – Vlad has a chance to stick, but I wouldn’t get too excited about it.

Give Vlad a HEALTHY full-season...
and I think he returns to 300AVG/30HR/100RBI production. Analyses that project his 2009 stats across a full-season are not valid, as he was always “struggling to return from injury…” knee surgery, pectoral, etc.
Hopefully, he gets into some serious shape starting TODAY and gets back to the form with which he had been so consistently producing.
I love this team.

I think we may be in the minority here, but I think he’ll have a bounce back year. Of course, I was one of the few who thought K-Mo could hit 25 or more HR’s, and I was ridiculed by many HHers.

Me 4
He was hurt this year. The torn pec troubled him all year as it was expected to. Typical Vlade — no complaints, no excuses. I believe he will bounce back. But I also believe that sometimes you do a signing from the heart. Vlade is BY FAR the best player in an Angel uniform that I have ever seen and he by always giving it his all, gave us innumerable memories. If he “clogs” up the H for 2 years, that’s a chance I’ll take and a price I’m willing to pay.
Baseball is more than stats and numbers, it is feel and heart. This is not Roto. I may in a very small minority, but I say sign him and reward him for his past contributions and hope that he can stay healthy as a DH.
BTW, while not Vlade-like, his post season was very respectable and had some big clutch moments.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Do baseball contracts ever include perfomance bonuses?
For example, could we make a deal with Vlad that is like 1.5 million with a bonus of 500,000 if you hit 25 or more homeruns?

Incentives...
The backbone of capitalism. Yes, they exist. And in my mind, they should be the forefront of every contract. But alas, unions…
by BruinHalo on Oct 27, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
IIRC, you can't have performance incentives
Just incentives for games played, at-bats, innings pitched, etc.
by WiHaloFan on Oct 27, 2009 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you can have award incentives
Like in the Zito contract listed in the GMJ thread.
by BruinHalo on Oct 27, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, you're right
The players can get bonuses for AS selection, MVP voting and such.
But I don’t think they can get incentives based on performance such as an extra $100,000/HR or $500,000/win. Not sure why that is
by WiHaloFan on Oct 28, 2009 7:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The player's union probably correctly figures there would be a time when all contacts were performance based.
Performance contracts = huge advantage, owners.

=true capitalism
The only downside of pure performance contracts is that injured players get hurt not just physically but financially too. I can only imagine how many players will cover up injuries just to keep playing.
That being said, I’d love to see performance incentive contracts with injury guarantees. I wonder if public support got behind it, the union would feel pressured to change.
by BruinHalo on Oct 28, 2009 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bonuses
You legally can get a bonus in a contract for anything. At bats can get a bonus, hr’s, rbi’s, games played.
Pitchers can get them for starts, appearances, innings.
Has nothing to do with Union. If the player agrees to a base salary and heavy incentives, the Union can do nothing about it.
That’s what we hit Vlad with. $3 mill for one year and incentives. Can even put in a clause that if he plays in 155 games and gets over 600 at bats a second year at $5 mill automatically is activated.
Those are perfectly normal contracts.

I personally think the team needs to make some changes.
However seeing how Scioscia has stuck with Vlad through thick and thin all season and lots of quotes stating how much he still believes in him, I see Vlad sticking around next season. With this kind of approval, fan favoritism, and loyalty I see Arte Moreno going along with this as good marketable business sense in keeping the fans happy. I expect him to be the DH and if healthy enough even back in right field.

I just don’t see him getting in without the prerequisite 2000 Rbis or 3000 hits.
Can he play at a high level for 3 more years? Add another 500 hits, 300 rbis and 80 hrs? I see him falling just short. I would expect ant player from this generation to face a much more stringent look at getting into the HOF and a much higher criteria than other era’s. It might not be fair, but then again remember who is voting.
Do you consider Bagwell or Andre Dawson, or Fred McGriff ? Those all have more Hits, Runs and HR’s than Vlad does right now.
I am not saying he doesn’t have a chance, but he will defiantly pay the price of playing in the “steroid” era.

I think he’ll put together a few more seasons (5 max) of offense in DH, and put together good enough #’s to be voted in, but certainly NOT on the first Ballot.

Jim Rice had lesser numbers but got in on his reputation (right or wrong). Vlad has been perceived as a lock for the better part of a decade and the numbers back it up. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference
it’s a 25 man roster. A team sport. The Hall of Fame is meant to enshrine people for their INDIVIDUAL accomplishments. You can’t hold it against a man that he wasn’t so amazingly fantastic that he couldn’t single-handedly pick up and carry his team all the way to a ring, because no one in the history of baseball has ever done it. If he spent his whole career with Montreal/Washington, there’s no way he’d be getting a ring…but then it would be even more abundantly clear what I’m saying: rings don’t mean anything less about the individual player.

I think if the 1994 strike had not happened, he might have.
Getting into the realm of a lot of IFs, but they led the league in ’94 and had a chance to actually be successful and grow the fan base and bring in money and support a whole team. This argument would hold more water if the Rays fans would go to some ballgames though.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Oct 28, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My idea is that the Expos, with success in '94 and without the loss of fans that the strike brought, would have had the potential to remain a contending team for several years.
And Vlad would have been a part of the continued contention era of the Expos.
Still, he’s obviously had better chances with the Angels than he ended up having in Montreal.

Yeah, I see what you're saying

“Vlad did great this post season. I think having Abreu around, Vlade might have learned a little patience, as we saw when he actually earned a few walks”
Uh, he waited ALL season long to start to learn something from Bobby? That’s a crock – you obviously didn’t watch his 1 for 7 game 2. And his “great” post season proves that numbers DO lie. He might have had a GOOD season – for Maicer Izturis. ( Check A-Rod’s numbers for a GREAT postseason, and his resume for a WS earned.)
The fact is, Vlad is still a complete FLAILER, not impaler. Of his 14 posteason “hits” only 2, maybe 3 were of the solid “man” hit variety – the rest were his usual assortment of squibs barely through the IF, or dying quail flares to the shallow OF. Worthy perhaps of the 8 or 9 spot, but not the cleanup position.

And you want that – assuming he’s healthy enough to acquire 550 ABs – from your cleanup batter?

Vlad's past two year's numbers....
and his age as a player, are almost identicle to Jim Rice’s at this stage of HIS career. Check out Rice’s last couple of years and tell me why the hobbled Vladdy, who seems to grimace with every step, will “come back” and produce better than Rice did in his final few years.
In my humble opinion, Vlad is destined to suffer a similar demise, and it is probably better that he doesn’t do it as an Angel.
Vlad had worse numbers than GA in HIS last year, and seems to be in far worse physical condition. The Angels didn’t offer GA arbitration – because he would have accepted it – and they let him walk away. They will ( SHOULD! ) do the same with Vlad.

Enough of your Vlad hate...
I am not happy with Vlad right now, but reading your excessive and repetitive diatribe makes me want to picket out in front of the stadium with “OFFER VLAD 4 YEARS $100 MILLION” posters, just to spite you.
I love this team.

Since when does....
since when does telling the truth about someone, equate to “Hate”? I don’t hate Vlad. I DO, however think very strongly that he has become a detriment to the team, in more ways than one. He’s useless in the field – that’s a given, and that is true.
And other than an 11 game stretch from 8/6 thru 8/18 ( when he batted over .400 ) Vladdy was a .265 hitter for the rest of the year, putting up numbers that were consistently lower than 6 or 7 other members of the team. That is real, and that is a truth.
I do NOT hate Vlad – I just think that the front office will see that it is time to move in a different direction – just like they did with GA last year – because it is as obvious to them as it is to me, that Vladdy has become more of a liability than an asset, and is a hinderance to the far less expensive, with far more upside, development of more than one upcoming player.
Vlad was great for one year, very good for 3 years, OK for one year, and pretty substandard ( compared to his original self .) this past year. Thanks for your contributions, Vladdy – good luck in your future.

It's probably just that every third post is yours, talking down Vlad.
Share your opinion. But don’t feel it necessary to share it again and again in response to every single post in the thread!
Rest in piece Nick, Courtney, and Henry. To the 2009 Angels: I love you all. Thanks for a ride every bit as enjoyable and entertaining as 2002.

SD
He wants to play the field, and I think the Padres would be perfect for him.
Close enough where he could keep his house in the OC, and they can’t stick him at DH. Going to the easier league would also be welcome. Plus Bud Black is there.
I would be happy for him if he wound up in SD.

Much as he'd love to be in the field all the time
I don’t think his already shaky knees could hold up a whole season running around in the outfield, and I would think a NL team would take that into consideration. Not sure if he’s ever played 1st base (though SD is covered in that position). I was just remembering how years ago the Yankees moved Mantle to first base after his knees became shot.

Knees
The concrete outfield in Montreal has claimed a second great outfielder. First Andre Dawson had a HOF career cut short because of the concrete outfield there, now Vlad. I don’t think his knees could take the outfield enough to play in the NL. The Padres are stupid with horrible owners but not that stupid.

Staying or going
I got to thinking about this on drive home from work tonight. Where is Vlad going to go? I am 90% sure he will be back at less than expected. He has no options. What teams could use him and will pay anything for him?
First of all, Vlad wants a ring, so he wants to play for a contender. That limits options greatly. He can’t play outfield anymore so that limits the NL. So what AL teams are left.
AL West: Angels. Rangers? No money to spend on him. Plus they have a DH. A’s and Mariners? Not contenders.
AL Central: Royals and Indians are out, not contenders. White Sox? Already loaded with aged veterans just like Vlad. Twins? Do not have the money to spend. Tigers? A possibility.
AL East: Orioles and Jays out. Not contenders. Red Sox? Ortiz at DH no need for Vlad. Yankees? Possible, but probably go after Bay for left and either Matsui or Damon for DH. Rays? A possibility. But they are reported to be looking to cut contract costs.
So it comes down to 3 teams. Vlad likes it here, i think he signs for less and stays.

interesting analysis
not sure money is the big issue here and I’m not sure the Rangers would be out of it.
Don’t count out the Orioles…they have been pointing to 2010 as a year they will be competitive for a while now. They have a good core of young players. They have an owner with money (albeit an asshole), a good front office and a regional TV network. If they could manage to get some pitching (Lackey anyone?) and a fill-in or two — like Vlade — they could make a run at .500 (baby steps).
Put a fork in Ortiz, he’s done. But Vlade doesn’t fit in the Bill Jamesian team theory.
Can’t see the Yankees in the mix as Posada moves closer to a full time DH (despite what others here have said, I believe Matsui is gone).
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

The Rangers would get a lot out of Vlad, the way he hits in their ballpark.
If they get an ownership change done soon, I think the new ownership might make that deal. Texas fans would probably be good with the move, again – considering the way he’s hit his whole career in Texas. Washington won’t feel any compulsion to bat him in the heart of the order and it could turn them into a team that’s even scarier to the Angels than they already were this year.
Rest in piece Nick, Courtney, and Henry. To the 2009 Angels: I love you all. Thanks for a ride every bit as enjoyable and entertaining as 2002.

it's not the Park
Vlad just feasts on Rangers pitching. Even former Rangers pitchers he tees off on. He rips them at home to. No it’s something to do with the R on the hats that makes his bat immune to outs.

HR's by Ballpark - Through October 29, 2009
1 Yankee Stadium (New York, NY) 1.261
2 Angel Stadium of Anaheim (Anaheim, California) 1.220
3 Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (Arlington, Texas) 1.194
This surprised me quite a bit to find.

And yet, he had almost double the production of Vlad. Yet another argument in favor of letting Vlad walk.

Right...
with no injury to speak of.
Vlad had at least two injuries to overcome this season… and the pectoral SEVERELY affected his hitting. You are firing missles blindly.
I love this team.

One thing to remember about Vlad's decline
Every sabrematrician has been predicting a severe drop off for Vlad since the beginning of this decade. And yet, every year Vlad outperforms their predictions.

He makes sense to sign...
as long as we don’t mind taking away AB from Napoli because that’s exactly whose AB we’re cannibalizing.
We also are removing the option to rest some of the OF.
Napoli had an OPS about 50 points higher in 2009, although I’d be interested to see Vlad’s OPS in the last 2-3 months.
Maybe re-signing him is worth doing but only on the cheap and only if we give AB to Napoli in the DH slot when advantageous.

Vlad's Month By Month OPS
April .658
May .551
June .715
July 1.043
August 1.014
September .655
October .875 (only 8 ABs, not incl postseason)
Pre All Star .734
Post All Star .845
Keep him healthy and rested and Vlad should produce. Not necessarily in line with his past, but well enough to be given a 1 year deal to see what he can do.

I hope to see Vlad back
I think that with his ability to put bat on ball, he still has a lot to offer, as long as he is willing to accept a possibly diminished role, e.g. batting 5th or 6th if that is where Scioscia wants to put him, and sitting a bit more in order to give Scioscia more flexibility at the DH position.
What we've got can't be bought

Bring him back
Sign him to a 1 yr. deal for 5-7 million with a club option for a 2nd year at 6-8. Maybe put in some incentive bonuses.

Big Daddy
Vlad should stay with the Angels so that, when he retires, he can open a restaurant somewhere near the stadium, call it “Big Daddy’s Momma” and feature recipes from his Mom. What a gold mine!! How can I buy into that?

He could also add
most of the mothers of his children, and then add “And his Baby Mommas” to the sign.
Can you imagine the entire family working there – and not one being able to speak English?
