another drunken MLB wife beater!
I didn't see this posted and I'm kinda surprised!! Miguel Cabrera, of the fine upstanding honorable CWS *Tigers, came home drunk (like 5 or 6 in the morning), decided he should wake up his sleeping 4 yr old and then got into a fight with the wife. Neither party is blaming the other, though I wonder how many times has this happened?
And another important question, especially after Nick....did this jerk drive himself home?
*edited cuz I screwed up....

Another case of the wife or girlfriend not bothering to press charges,
for all the good and bad reasons, and Miguel is free to do it to her again the next time. The sad part is there usually is a next time.

where should he be? in jail for marrying an abusive nutjob?

Miguel Cabrera is 6'4" and 240 pounds.
He should not be engaging any woman in a physical altercation. Not a fair fight no matter who started it.

How do you know he fought her/ “engaging any woman in a physical altercation” (lol)? Is is possible that he was only trying to get a nutjob off of her? You do not know so why act as if you do?

That's a bit much, really
It doesn’t always matter WHO called 911. You get a woman who is vindictive enough and who knows the cops are much more likely to arrest a man for domestic violence than a woman, well… see where I’m going?
(This is not to say that I’m sure many many more men than women are probably the aggressors in these situations, but it constitutes a stereotype nonetheless)

I blame him for coming home at 5-6 am
waking a child and potentially driving home with that high a BA.
I seriously doubt if his house is that TINY. It sounds more like the fight was over “who are you talking to at this time and why are you so drunk and why did you wake the kid”. She tried to grab the phone and per the police report, he WAS belligerent, he did the ‘get outta my face’ thing and she didn’t.
by ladybug on Oct 6, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so u blame him for nothing?
he can come home any time he wants. his wife no likey then she can bounce.
if someone is drunk then they are potentially driving drunk? even if there is no confirmation of driving? lol
he woke up his kid. so? i think he will live.
being beligerant and doing ‘get outta my face’ thing is criminal? hahaha. kooky.

Actually, no, good husbands don't come home any time they want, because they are husbands.
They have obligations that they agreed to; it’s part of the whole idea of being married. You know, playing fair with each other, being courteous and letting your partner know where you are, etc.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
by opiejeanne on Oct 6, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, yes.
Being married doesn’t mean each person needs to be strapped to a gps at all times. Husband says “I’m going out tonight to hang with a couple buddies and get wasted.” Wife says, “have fun”. Some people act as if marriage means that you are owned til death. Being fair is not what you describe. Again, if either party doesnt like it, the door is open. Given the responses by some here no wonder that over 50% of marriages fail. Squeezing a person into a box will lead to a healthy relationship.
by BamBam19 on Oct 7, 2009 12:18 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, almost.
Wife says, “Have fun, and what time do you think you might be home tonight?” Or husband says, “i’m going to hang etc. I’ll be back around X am.” It’s courteous, so that the other party knows when to start calling the hospitals.
Let’s just turn that around. Wife says, I’m going to go out tonight and hang with a couple of friends, and get wasted." "Have fun. "
She staggers in at 5am drunk as a skunk and you don’t think there will be trouble?
Yes, some people act as if they own each other, others act as if they owe each other: a minimum of consideration and courtesy to each other, since they did take vows along those lines.
My marriage has lasted nearly 40 years, not all of it blissful but most of the problems could have been avoided by consideration of the other’s feelings (and I’m more to blame than he is). Simple.
I could ask how long yours has lasted, but that wouldn’t be fair because I have a head start.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
by opiejeanne on Oct 7, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree it must be mutual
Yes, if you turn it around and the wifey wants to go have a blast and come home whenever that night, and does so, it will be fine. Just needs to be agreed to. So, no, there would be no trouble. And there is nothing wrong with doing so. Everything in moderation and under the right circumstances obviously but every marriage that I see fail is because one of the partners clamps down on the other person’s need to let loose once in a while.

There's so much here that ticks me off, it's hard to know where to begin.
Dear Miguel, If you want to not put your own life and the lives of others in jeopardy, don’t drive home drunk at 5 am or any time of the day or night, for that matter. If you insist, eventually your kid won’t have a dad because you will be in jail or dead, and your wife can go find a better guy to be with.
How’s that work for you?

Just connecting dots here: How did Cabrera get from the Townsend hotel where he was drinking..
back to his home? Walked? 4+ miles with a BAC of .26? At 5am? Hmm…Cabrera had already had an altercation at that hotel in August and had been warned by the Tiger organization to stay away from the hotel. The cops didn’t catch him driving when he blew the .26 so he wasn’t charged with DUI. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t driving drunk earlier though. He just didn’t get caught. Interesting that none of the neighbors who saw the altercation mentioned that he was dropped off by the White Sox buddies at his home. The GM had to pick him up at the station when it was all said and done. If his BAC had been .35, it would have been a trip to the hospital.

How nice
His team is fighting for its season in the final two games of the regular season, and Miggy is staying out until 5 am drinking the night/morning before a crucial game.
The net result was an 0 for 7 during the games Sat and Sun (with two RISP LOB), and with his team’s loss on Sat the Twins caught up and forced a tiebreaker on Tuesday.
That shows a real dedication to your teammates.

How is he a wife beater???
What did he do?If the guy wanted to beat the tar out of his wife there is no way he gets those marks on his head. He was defending himself from the nutjob. I’d drink, too, if I were him and had to come home to that piece of work.

I'm kind of with Bam Bam 19 on this
I have seen whacko chicks try to beat the shit out of dudes who couldn’t really do anything about it for fear of going to jail for merely defending themselves. Just because you are a woman does not give you a free pass to throw blows. Even if the cops don’t think so.
We don’t know that Cabrera beat his wife. We don’t know that he drove drunk. We don’t even know that he INTENTIONALLY woke up his kid. Maybe he tripped over the kid’s skateboard and woke up the whole household and his wife got pissed at him for coming home late/drunk. Who knows? WhyTF is everyone here so judgmental?

Call it an educated guess
If a guy is 6’4" and 250-ish (Miggy has frequently been expansive in the middle), unless Mrs C is a Samoan woman, it is unlikely she would be able to beat the crap out of him. The police story noted both had bruises, though neither would press charges.
She might have been hell on wheels, but dad taught me that there is never a reason to hit a woman. Period.
His transgression against his teammates is indisputable. His transgression against his wife is conjecture—but it is an educated guess.

Also, his BAC was measured at .26, more than 3 times the legal limit in CA.
Agreed this is not relevant to drunk driving (if he wasn’t driving), but likely a factor in the noise and altercation with his wife.
by sothball on Oct 6, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK
BUT, a small woman could beat up a large man if the man were not fighting back. So then what’s a guy supposed to do? Maybe try to hold her arms down? Push her away? She could easily get bruises if the man does either of these… Does that mean her beat her? Is that “hitting” a woman?
Never a reason to hit a woman? Not even in self-defense? If a woman came at you with a knife, baseball bat, or some other deadly weapon, assuming you had nowhere to run, your and your dad’s principles would likely get you killed. Just saying.

The woman had bruises. This was from an altercation, and there is no evidence there was a 3rd party in the house who was an adult.
There is no reason to hit a woman when one is as big and strong as Miguel Cabrera.

I was giving an example of justifiable self-defense not covered by your oh so chivalrous maxims
I guess if you can’t refute it, you mock it, eh?
You are still assuming that Cabrera “hit” his wife. This has not been proven.

by Higz on Oct 6, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am following Higz' line of reasoning here.
I know nothing about the facts. If there are official statements that he struck his wife, that is a very clear position that he is in the wrong.
BUT…
If there are no official statements to that effect, nor any personal statements by him that he struck her, it is possible that he spent the majority of the altercation in a drunken stupor, failing miserably at any attempt to defend himself. Hence his bruises. Finally, realizing that the beatings from his wife are NOT going to stop, he may have pushed her away and grabbed a hold of her arms or pinned her body until she quit, causing her bruises. Then, still angry but now in pain, she locks herself away and calls 911.

Yes
It’s equally plausible as him striking her. People here were very quick to assume Cabrera was the bad guy. The most that has been established about his specific actions is that he was drunk and he came home late. Being big and drunk hardly makes one a wife-beater.

The 911 call doesn't really bolster her side of the story
See my comments above.
PLUS, all she said to the dispatcher was “I need help. My husband, drinking”
Why didn’t she say that he had beaten her? Seems fishy to me. But I’ll be the first to condemn him if it comes out that he assaulted her.

what's a guy supposed to do?
1) Don’t get shitfaced with the opposing team until 6 in the morning.
2) Don’t wake up the kid when you stumble home.
3) Don’t have a history of randomly threatening people with violence in bars (as Cabrera does).
4) Don’t marry people who will suddenly start assaulting you in the face.
5) If you somehow can’t manage 1-4, and you are a 6’ 4" professional athlete, you block the damn punches by putting your arms in front of your face. It’s really not hard, and I can’t believe we’re having this conversation.
