Vladdy at the crossroads

The only Angel who really didn't look zoned in against the Sox was Vladdy, who had a terrible at-bat against Lester with the bases loaded. I think he's facing a crossroads as his phenomenal hand-eye coordination declines. He still has enough talent to play for 5-7 years more, but he has to become a real hitter just as lots of power pitchers have to learn how to pitch as they age.
If he learns to work counts and wait for his pitch, he can not only reach 500 home runs, but he has a shot at 3,000 hits. If he insists on being wild-swinging Vladimir Gurrrero till the bitter end, it'll be sooner, rather than later, and he may not even reach 500 HRs. It's still good enough for the Hall, but it'll leave a sour taste ... At least that's my take.

Yeah he looked bad last night.

But he’s probably still kind of hurt is my guess. He’s still a .300 hitter pretty much. I don’t know. If he doesn’t have a good post season, probably got to definitely let him walk. He carried the offense for so long, but now he doesn’t look like he fits anymore.

If Mathis remains

then Napoli has to DH. The question is how much is Vlad worth in a 4th outfielder / DH platoon role? Would he take $3m or $4m a year to remain with the Halos – or do we take the two draft choices and move on?

The signing priorities remain Lackey, Abreu and Figgins. It’s too tough to find solid SP these days, and we have to keep what we’ve got. SOS and Bell are not the answer to replace Lackey. If Figgins stays, then we have to believe Wood is gone.

I think most of us have realized...

That Vlad can no longer hit good pitching and will therefore continue to struggle in the playoffs.

I hope he proves me wrong, but history is not on his side.

It's no surprise

he has 0 RBI’s in these series we have with the Sox. He has no patience and swings at everything. All the pitcher needs to do is throw the ball slightly out of the zone and Vlad will hack away. It’s killing us.

Stick him in the 7th spot or DH Naps

But that was five years ago brah.

Just saying. I think that us Halo fans are really torn, and afraid to admit that Vladdy is no longer the hitter he once was. The past is the past, all the great ones decline, Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, and now Vlad.

I'm not going to sit here and analyze the stats...

…back and forth, for or against. I just know Vlad still offers a scary presence in the lineup, even if he backs that up only once or twice a series.

On that note, man, he looked BAD last night. When he was up with the bases loaded I kept screaming, WHAT ARE YOU SWINGING AT?! Is it just me or did all of you know Lestah was going to go with high heat? Sad he went after those bad pitches.

I agree with the presence idea.

I think having him in there at clean-up makes opposing teams fear him. Moving him to 6th-8th would make him seem less intimidating.

Vlad has lost way too much bat speed

There is no way he should be batting 4th. It doesn’t look like he can slug the ball anymore.

Even GMJ (.336) had a better OBP this year compared to Vlad (.334).

Dont fret yet...

Vladdy did get a hit in this game. A hit that resulted into a run. Also, he showed a lot of patience at the plate in last years playoffs. Maybe that will carry over again in Game 2.

With the bases juiced, Vlad went up there hacking. What else do you want Vlad to do? Its how he plays the game. Sure he is deteriorating and I was questioning by strike three, if that chance had just cost us the game. Looking back though, its the way he plays. And imagine if he had hit one of those pitches. BOOM.

It will be extremely hard for Vlad to change.

He has had so much success as a free swinger. Currently, smart pitchers are getting him out on pitches that are nowhere near the zone. The pop-out yesterday to 1B was case in point. If he hadn’t hit it, the ball might have hit his toes.
If he did develop some plate discipline (about 1/2-3/4 of Abreu) he could re-establish himself as one of the top 5-10 power hitters in the league.

Old dog, new tricks? I hope so, but don’t think it will happen.

A hit???

They called that a hit? Wow, if that’s all we can hang our hats on…he was horrible last night, but he’s been horrible all year. I don’t know what made anyone think that he would do something different last night. We will live or die with Vladdy batting cleanup for us. Scioscia will not make a change during the playoffs. I think we will win despite Vlad batting cleanup but it would sure be nice if he was batting 7th or sitting in place of Napoli.

You are right Bryan Harvey, it is how he plays the game. The problem is that that approach used to work for him, back when he had amazing bat speed and flexibility. Those days are long gone and he has stubbornly decided to not make the adjustments. That is what is most frustrating. He probably could do what every other aging professional does, make an adjustment. In fact, he could probably do it better and turn back into the .315 and 30HR Vlad. But he doesn’t want to. His lack of discipline and his reluctance to change his ways makes it very clear to me that he is not a valuable baseball player anymore. I love his modesty and humility, but this is a sign of arrogance in a way. It would be the only sign of arrogance in a guy that is all class. The only chink in his armor. Make the adjustment Vlad…admit to yourself that you are not the same player…embrace change and maybe you can make it back.

The fact that GMJ had a higher OBP is just sad. Let’s hope he has some better games ahead of him and can turn the page on last night. For what it’s worth, I think he will have some big ribbies for us in this postseason, but it won’t change my mind about him as a player.

He looked zoned in to me.

Any baseball discovered southwest of the pitcher’s mound is something to be swung at. That has always been Vlad’s “zone”, and he remains right there. It just ain’t working for him anymore.

My eyes tell me too much arms and shoulders, not enough leg/hip/waist. Probably because his legs are shot. No need for pitchers to throw him anything reasonable.

Like I said in the game thread last night, I think GMJ would be a very productive DH

along with Napoli for the remainder of the post season. Vlad’s bat speed is slow against this pitching we will face and really you don’t need to swing at the first three pitches that come across the plate every at bat. Could Vlad’s eyesight be waning?

I admit I was devastated when he K’d with the bases loaded.. I don’t think Vlad can change,I don’t think he was ever mentally a strong hitter,he just relied on pure skill alone…
Now the skill is going, and he is not a great mental hitter..I don’t think he thinks much other then to swing at everything hard.. He will never change his approach, just my thought..
Good pitchers will get him out,jam him, throw the ball in the dirt…Any pitcher that throws him good pitches is either making a mistake or being stupid…
I’ll always love Vlad, but I’m hating watching him the the playoffs …
On a side note,he did have 5 days off before he played last night.. That is something that must be counted for him,how could his timing be great, facing a 95 mph thrower like Lester…
