Old Footage of Ruth Discovered...
Maybe the timing of this post is a bit off considering we are currently eating, sleeping, and dreaming of playoff victory against the Beantown Sux. However, as my only connection to a community of true baseball fans I thought this could be appreciated by everyone here at HH.
The NY Times reported yesterday the discovery of old video footage of Babe Ruth and the original, old Yankees stadium. Believed to be from 1928, the short footage includes, amongst other things, Ruth striking out and then leaning on his bat like a cane while arguing with the ump. Super grainy but pretty cool for anyone that is a fan of baseball.
Also, check out centerfield. 480 FEET!!!! (I dont even think Torii's homerun last night would have made it out at that length!)

Did you notice the light pole in the middle of the outfield?
That’s some crazy stuff.

I expected this to be about Bobby Abreu
They certainly pitched him like he was The Babe last night.

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

Interesting because the first night game wasn't until 1939...
…and they figure the year was 1928.

That's right
What else could it be? An electric utility pole?
That makes it even stranger.

Was the stadium also used for football or other sports?
maybe something to help them transition sport to sport easier?

Yes to football games
Yankee Stadium was host to numerous college football games back in the day. Remember, it wasn’t until the 1960s that the NFL was anywhere near as popular as college ball, so you’d get a lot of classic Notre Dame-Army and Army-Navy type matchups, games that drews tens of thousands. When my dad was a plebe at West Point in the early ‘50s, he said he attended 2 games at Yankee Stadium, both football. Not sure when they stopped doing it, but I’m guessing it was sometime between the early ’50s and ’60s.
