A Veterans Day Reminder

Happy Veterans Day and a Halos Heaven salute to all of our readers who have ever served our country.

Did you know that Arte Moreno is a veteran? He fought in the Army in Vietnam for two years.

Can anyone tell me if any other Major League Baseball owners are U.S. veterans?

I guess banks and post offices are closed today, so you can all mail me money tomorrow.

Can't say this is complete, but a quick search found this:

It’s no comprehensive, necessarily, but in addition to Arte:

Mike Illitch – Detroit Tigers – Marines for four years
Carl Pohlad (deceased 1/5/09) – Minnesota Twins – Drafted and fought in WWII
George Steinbrennar – New York Yankees – Air Force Lieutenant
Ted Lerner – Washington Nationals – U.S. Army during WWII

Hitler was in the army, too

Steinbrennar is a selfish, arrogant, narcissistic, evil, mean-spirited prick first, and an Air Force Lieutenant a far and distant second. Respect denied.

Agree

in that service by itself is not enough grounds for automatic respect. While at the same time anyone that spit at our servicemen because they didn’t agree with a war can die a slow painful death for all I care.

Just an urban legend

I served in the Army after high school and most of my NCOs were Vietnam vets who used to laugh about tales of veterans supposedly getting spat on after returning stateside. They would joke that they wished someone had cared enough about their service to bother spitting on them. I found that out myself when applying for jobs after I got out – people generally don’t give a damn one way or another about your service.

That's the truth.

I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs, have a degree, working on graduate degree…nada damn thing. I know it is partly the economy, but I wish I had stayed in.

This.

Serving in the military doesn’t give you a free pass for being a d-bag.

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

I think

that you can seperate the two. You can respect his service to the country in the Airf Force, and at the same time be totally disgusted with the way he ran the Yankees, and the part he played in the upward and out of control spiral of players salaries during his ownership.

We're putting the band back togehter.

Or the whole deal about

spending money to dig up dirt on your own players so you won’t instead have to spend that money on making a donation to a charity your promised to donate to.

I think I read somewhere his time in the Air Force was not very inspiring

Don’t flame me if I am wrong. I am also too lazy to look.

Thank you to all our vets

You did/do what I am way too much of a wuss to do. All the sacrifices you’ve made have not gone unnoticed and unappreciated.
