The Indians are willing to move Kerry Wood, who has one year remaining on his two-year, $20 million deal. Signing Wood made all the sense in the world for them a year ago, when it seemed the Indians might compete in the AL Central. But in the aftermath of the trades of Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee, Cleveland is in rebuilding mode and thus Wood is an expensive bauble. Given that there are so many closers available on the market, however, the Indians might not be able to move Wood's contract without eating some money.

Worth a shot to replace Fuentes?
He couldn’t be any worse, he’s only signed for a year, and Cleveland might take a couple of forgettable prospects for him if we don’t squeeze them too hard on the salary eating…

agreed
everyone knows Matthews is a great rebuilding piece. great for both teams
wondering what Ortiz did with that game ball...
I'm just mad
that he didn’t share!
1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com
Please explain how this would improve the Angels
Wood appeared in 50 games for the Indians, blew 6 situations, finished with 20 saves, an ERA of 4.25, a WHIP of 1.382, and batters had an OPS of .703 in 2009.
Fuentes appeared in 57 games for the Angels, blew 7 situations, finished with 48 saves, an ERA of 3.93, a WHIP of 1.400, and batters had an OPS of .720 in 2009.
Where is the substantial improvement for the Angels? How would Wood’s numbers in 2009 justify the trading of any player with even modest upside?
Or were you thinking Wood would be a setup man? Compared to Jepsen, Wood’s numbers don’t come close to making a case for Wood to come into the game in the 8th. In the meantime, Wood is slated to make more in 2010 than Fuentes and Jepsen combined. I don’t know how much of that salary you were expecting Mark Shapiro to eat, but he is nobody’s fool and this offseason ain’t his first rodeo.
Finally, while Olney incorrectly states that Wood has just one year remaining, Wood in fact has an option for 2011 which automatically vests if he closes out 55 games in 2010. Fuentes has the same option, but his would pay him $9M, while Wood’s option would earn him $11M.
There is no way to slice and dice this idea, the Angels don’t come out on top from any possible deal.

I'd rather the Angels sign a relief pitcher in FA
The Angels shouldn’t give anything up to acquire one. Besides, I trust that Shields will be able to come back this year and pitch effectively.
It will bring a lot more to the the Bullpen
When Scott Shields returns.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
Shields being injured is one of the biggest reasons we got past the BoSox in the playoffs
Sosh is determined, DETERMINED I TELL YOU, to have Shields get over his “I Suck Total Ass in Fenway” thing.
I for one would be absolutely-shit-myself-happy if I never see Shields pitch again.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Cut out the BullShit......
I for one would be absolutely-shit-myself-happy if I never see Shields pitch again.
Tell us how you really feel!
I almost agree
I think I’d rather trust Shields to come back than trade for Wood and trust him. Besides aren’t there a fair amount of decent closers on the FA market this year? Soriano looks pretty dope.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

Doubt it
The Cubs were the kings of trying to squeeze the life out of their starters, and they were the ones who moved him to the pen in the first place. That says it all for me.

Buster on Lackey today also...
# If you want John Lackey, it will be pricey. Sources say he turned down $72 million from the Angels earlier this year, the team’s last offer.

I wonder if that's 4 or 5 years....
18 million or 14.4 million a year. I’m gonna guess 14.4 because turning down 18 would be crazy.

If Lackey walks than we better be going after Halladay!
Trade Juan Rivera, Gary Matthews Jr, & Jeff Mathis for Halladay.
Sign Figgy and put him in the OF
Move Wood to 3rd..
Bring up Conger to back up Nipples.
Keep Vlad at a hometown discount, if not go after Jim Thome
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
no way Toronto takes that package for Halladay
ahahahahahahaahaaaa
Our scrubs for a pitcher better than ANONE on earth… HMMM… jeez, why not make them pay all of Halladay’s salary as well.
Future HOF Pitcher
for Juan Rivera , GMJ, and Mathis.

It is funny
that alot of people believe in the fantasy that trading GMJ will somehow lead us to acquire a great player in return. We won’t get a damn thing in return for Mathews! It is frustrating sometimes.
I say never, ever trade for a reliever during the off-season.
That’s strictly a during the year operation if you’re potentially post season bound. It’s just a reliever. No matter how you shake it. I’d rather see how guys like Bulger, Bell, Jepsen, Mosebach, etc do during the spring. If they step up their game, you got your bullpen already. No has-beens needed.
Happy Birthday to the ground!
