Nationals Targeting Lackey
According to mlbtraderumors.com ....They want him to mentor their young guns...could be the wild card in the Lackey sweepstakes

I was just thinking about that.
Talk about win for the Nationals. If they sign Lackey, couldn’t he be an amazing mentor to Stephen Strasburg. Three or four years playing with Lackey could bring Stratsburg to the next level. Plus with Lackey in the NL, facing off against teams like Phillies, Braves, and to a lesser extent the Mets, we’d probably never face him again, except the rare inter-league play. I also remember hearing that Lackey used to put up some power number at the bat, any truth to that?
But what I’m more concerned about is compensatory draft picks. I’m fairly certain that the Angels will offer arbitration to Lackey and with the Nationals awful record last year, aren’t the Angels certain to get some “choice” draft picks if the Nats do infact sign Lackey, or is that protected 1st round business. Anyone in the know, please clarify for me.
Thanks

The first 15 picks are protected (Nationals have 1st pick next year)
If the Nationals sign Lackey we get their 2nd round pick and a sandwich round pick. If it were the Mariners for example (pretty sure their outside the top 15) we would get their 1st round pick and a sandwich round pick.
Nick would be proud.

as far as I know
top 15 picks are protected.
So if the Angels offfer arb., and Lackey is the highest rated type A the Nationals sign, then we get their 2nd round and a 1/2 sandwich pick.
Isn't that what pitching coaches are for?
Seriously, if you’re going to spend $100+ million on a pitcher, it better be because you want to win, not because you want a “mentor” for the kids. With Lackey, they might win another five games, but what’s five more wins when you only won 59 last year?
More so than pitching coach
but a big game pitcher with Lackey’s skills and a guy who can mentor the young. If the Nats try to go all out, maybe they can make a run at the Wildcard.
Aren’t the Nats moving into a new stadium soon?

I think he wants to play for a winner
The Nationals are a couple of years away, at best.

If he signs with the Nationals I will laugh.
But at least he’ll have October off for the first few years anyway.

Don't they ALL say they want to play for a winner?
Just once I’d like to hear an athlete say: “I don’t care if we lose 100 games, I want my $80MM.”

I'm in it for the 42 million dollars
I’d love to hear that as well.

Thats really cute of them. The Nats are like a liitle kid trying to act like a grown up.
It’s funny that they think they have a chance.
