HH Quick Tip: "Resign" vs. "Re-sign"
Quick usage tip for a common word on HH this offseason:
Here's the correct way to use the word that means "sign again" versus the one that means "retire voluntarily from a job" or "accept something undesirable that can't be avoided":
"I hope the Angels re-sign Vladdy, in part because when he resigns from baseball, he will go into the HOF as an Angel."
"If folks here continue to misspell re-sign, then I will be resigned to the fact that this is apparently the nature of The Internets."

Do you know how many times YESWECAN has corrected my grammar at a baseball game?
Usually matches the number if HRs in the game.
i only remember 1 HR
that was the one where G.A. hit a bomb that was about to smash your face. I was RESIGNED to reaching up and saving your face, after which I shouted “Way to go, G.A. Arte, we must RE-SIGN him!!!” :)
details, details....
i’ve never corrected your grammar at a baseball game, or anywhere else, for that matter…
oh yeah that's right
your “i seen this” and “i seen that”. i almost done forgotted ‘bout dat wun…i guess i haven’t seen Deliverance in a while.
And it is Arte Moreno, not Artie, as short for Arthur.

Yes. We really need to loose the grammer and spelling problems around here.
And the tpyo’s. Not too mention bad use of apostrophes.
I don’t know if opiejeanne is re-tired or not, but she can get cranky.

you're post is very informational
alot of the grammer and speling problems in a post’ makes it hard to focus on the content.
bring on the edit button!
At which point I would then edit the post of mine which you replied to,
and I would announce that there is a possibility that Granderson might be made available for trade, with the Angels being a possible trade partner.
This, then, would render your reply as the one that is totally nonsensical!
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Cranky? You're complaining about me being cranky?
Oh yeah, I’m cranky and I blame the codeine in my cough syrup.
Loose? Are your shoes loose? Or did you lose your head?
Consarn it.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
"loose" is the only thing you found wrong?
And here I thought calling you “re-tired” was the one that was going to get your goat!
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Disgruntled English teacher in agreement.
Poor grammar and sentence structure takes away from the greatness that is Halos Heaven.
And as long as I’m complaining, posts about lineups and opinions concerning trades that aren’t even being discussed anywhere are equally annoying.
Apologies in advance.

Brilliant. No wonder they are protesting.
Clearly they are already spending too much money on whatever it is that they are getting for an education. Their parents should inquire about a refund.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Indeed!
It’s also hard to sympathize with their tuition being hiked $2,000 when ours is being hiked over $10,000-$15,000 over the next two years. At least I’ll be out of school by the time it gets to $45,000…

Both my boys are in grad school now.
So I can easily recall private university education costs, and these kids are getting a 4 year degree for a total cost equivalent to a single year of top-tier private schooling. Sure, nobody twisted our arm and forced my son into a private uni, but nobody forced these kids into the UC system, either. The Cal State system is cheaper. Hell, they could just as easily have moved to Iowa, waited tables for three years, and entered state schools there and saved a bundle. And, unless you are planning to go on to graduate school where they place an unusual value on certain undergrad programs, all those BA’s look pretty much the same.
That UCLA degree is a steal. Just ask the out-of-state students there.

Just had this discussion with my HS kids yesterday about this
There are a LOT of schools out there, and a LOT of choices. And a LOT of ways to skin the cat once the choice is made.
A UC school for $10-12K? And there are STILL aid opportunities to reduce that? Not sure where the problem is here.

What does that make a CSU education?
For some offseason fun, check out the Mac & Windows Space Shooter game I helped make: Insectoid

I went to a CSU too.
It just depends on when and where you are, and which department. The arts department ranged from mediocre to brilliant, but the engineering, science and ag departments were excellent, as were the students who survived those programs. Looking back, I really wish I had signed up for architecture instead of being bamboozled by a favorite music teacher.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Oh, yeah, I'm a grad student
So like I said I have little sympathy for the undergrads complaining. What gets my goat a bit is I could have gone to several (lower-ranked) private universities with a full ride or close to it, and yet I chose the UC system because it was cheaper over the long run and most prestigious for where and what I want to practice. And it’s otherwise arguably the best school in southern CA. Now with the hikes, it might have been more worthwhile to go to certain private institutions that would have paid me to attend and over the long run may be ranked just as well. So in a way it’s a wash—I wind up paying more for the public institution than I would have for the private.

I really think that if you want to blame someone for a student having poor grammar
that it should be their K-12 educators. I don’t think that by the time they’ve reached that level of education that their professors should be focusing on grammar.
here is the problem
how the hell does one get admitted to “higher” education without having mastered the core curricula of “lower” education.

...and if they don't learn anything...
…I suppose NEXT you’ll want to hold the precious creatures back a grade, thereby severly impacting their self-esteem…and somehow contributing to global warming. FASCIST!!!
it's the trophy generation
They don’t know how to take criticism because when they played Little League every single one of them got a game ball. Some schools don’t even give F’s anymore, rather they give I’s because “no one is a Failure” they just haven’t done all the work expected from them (incompletes).
When we played little league
The player of the game got the game ball, signed by every other teammate. At some point most people wound up with one over the course of a full season—but there was always a really good reason for that particular person getting it, beyond “oh you showed up and tried.” If that makes me part of the trophy generation…eh.
I had a middle school English teacher, who, even though it was a lit class, told me her ears twitched any time she heard bad grammar. I think I acquired this tic by osmosis.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

I think you guys might be overstating things a little bit
This isn’t really the forum for defense of it, but every generation believes the generation after them represents some sort of decline. This a tried and true occurrence.

Nick would be proud.

I didn't give any opinion about whether this new generation
is a decline at all. I’m only 31 so some time lines have me in the trophy generation. All I did was point out a criticism of the current generation that I’d think most people would agree to, which ist that they have a harder time taking criticism because their parents and teaches have focused on what they do well to build up their self-esteem.
I’m sure if I wanted to I could point out flaws of every generation, but the intent of my previous posts was not at all to rank generations.
Gotcha
But I think my main point of disagreement here is a problem with the parents thinking this is the kind of environment best for the kids rather than an issue with the kids themselves. My post was more towards the other responses, yours just happened to be last.
RIP #34
The whole re-sign versus resign, is a tad annoying.
I mean c’mon people, I ain’t hardly got any higher edumacation book learning, but I still spell re-sign correctly.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I'l resign myself
To this kind of fare until baseball returns- By then they will have Lackey, Guerrero et al re-signed… or not…
