Juan Rivera for Curtis Granderson?
According to "Mlblogs":http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/11/rivera_a_trade_chip_for_angels.html
Juan Rivera has been indicated as Trade Bait, possibly for Curtis Granderson or Edwin Jackson.
This would make since if the Angels are not expecting to resign John Lackey. Jackson had a good 2009 season, posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.26 Whip.
Granderson could move from Center to Left and cost the club a similar $5.5M in 2010. He is signed through 2013 at 11=8.25M, 12=10M, 13=13M (courtsey of Cot's contracts).
AVG HR RBI RUNS SO OBP SLG
Granderson .249 30 71 91 141 .327 .453
Rivera .287 25 88 72 57 .332 .423
Now you've gotten your daily Granderson rumor.
Do you like this trade? Would you prefer Jackson or Granderson or someone else?

OMG OMG, GRANDERSON IS AVAILABLE??
WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS?
Who do you think it will take? I think it’s going to take much more than Juan Rivera, who only hit a lot better over the course of the last two seasons. I think we should throw in Wood and Mathis, too.

But if you're actually asking seriously,
Keep Rivera and go for Jackson.

Go for Jackson if we dont re-sign Lackey.
But then who do you offer for EJ? Low-level, mid tier prospects? Or is Jackson good enough AND cheap enough that we have to throw premier talent at him?
Nick would be proud.

Please, please, please...
Stop with the Granderson shit. It was funny the first day, now it’s beyond annoying.

This comment is completely untrue. And you spelled "awesomeness" wrong (there's more than 1 S and no H, I or T).
The Granderson awesomeness was funny the first day and is still hilarious.

Jackson
Look at his splits—the kid fades very badly in the second half. Look at him in 2008 and 2009 and the results were the same—around August his numbers simply wilt.
Consider also that the price to extract him from Tampa Bay was a middling-ceilinged prospect—suffice it to say, Matt Joyce is no Juan Rivera.
I think we need a little more perspective in some of these proposed trades.

Jackson is a far cry from a sure thing.
Odds are he’ll pull a Santana. You know, a good year, a shat year, a great year, a shat year.

Call me crazy...
….but I think our bullpen will be fine next year. Fuentes might not have great peripherals, but he gets the job done. Shields will be healthy and will have had PLENTY of rest for next year. Jepsen’s 1st half was deer in the headlights mixed in with a back injury and Bulger was trying to figure it out. In the 2nd half, both Bulger and Jepsen became vital parts to our ’pen. Jepsen developed cut action to his fastball and Bulger has a slightly above average curve and there performance shows it.
Round that out with Palmer in long relief, Moseley on mop up/long relief and guys like chopper, Rodriguez and Mosebach to handle one out type situations and we should be a-ok from the 7th inning on.
Nick would be proud.

you said call you crazy, so I obliged
In all seriousness, I hope the pen is better next year. A lot of it depends on how Scot Shields comes back.

I'm not sold on Jackson.
He had an amazing half of a season and then he imploded after the all-star break. And he’s bad mediocre at best for the rest of his career.

Absolutely Not
We don’t need Granderson at all. That would be a trade just for the sake of making a trade. I’m not all that sold on Jackson either.

Granderson?
Like, Curtis Granderson? Is he available? We should look into trading for him, and putting him in left field. After all, Juan Rivera is a defensive liability. Granderson hits lefties well, right?
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Granderson
had an off year last year… and those numbers still arent terrible and he could fill a potential void left by figgy
One time...
i really wouldnt
want to see rivera and his better numbers/hair stylist going to detroit. i think rivera hits 30+ HR and throws out alot more baserunners.

Let's have some perspective here, huh?
I agree the hard-on’s for Granderson are silly, but I think if you ask any GM in the game if they’d take him over Rivera (contracts aside) and I’m sure every last one of them takes Curtis. He’s 2 years younger, more athletic, and has consistently put up slighty better numbers. You can argue Rivera’s injuries have skewed his numbers a bit, but I think health should be factored into value as well. Yes, Curtis strikes out a lot, but he’s also put up over 70 walks each of the last two seasons and can swipe you 20 bags. Anyone see Bill James’ study this year on Rivera’s base running? Rivera is a good value guy, but I don’t think the Angels turn down this trade if its offered straight up.
Rivera is a better defender
And hits for a higher average. His fielding % was .992, second only to Hunter and he led the team in outfield assists. (That’s throwing people out if you don’t know). I don’t think Granderson will do that.

Blah
Fielding % is a joke, especially for outfielders. Granderson plays center, which is a much more demanding position than left (if you don’t know). Granderson draws more walks, pretty much canceling out the higher average. They’re close, but side by side I still take Curtis. And I like Rivera.
Not necessarily
It measures “chances” which yes, are somewhat in the eye of the stats guys, but overall it’s pretty accurate. Strikeouts don’t lie though, and Granderson clearly strikes out far more often than Rivera. If you’re an opposing manager in a close game and the Angels have two guys on, who would you be more concerned about facing? I think most would say Rivera. I’ve rarely seen Granderson at the plate and thought something big was about to happen.

It depends what the team is looking for…
If you lost Figgins and with losing Vlad,do you want more speed or more power with Rivera ??
That is a tough call,as he could fit into the team system well, but then you lose an RBI guy in Rivera who hits the ball HARD
Tough decisions for the GM, that is why they get the big bucks.
Yeah but...
Rivera is gonna get more RBIs most likely and more hits and I’m pretty sure his arm is better. His arm is seriously one of the best in the league.
It’s not that I don’t like Granderson. I just think Rivera is a more well-rounded player.

Humbly, A Limerick Regarding Our Granderson Dilemma
There is a ballplayer named Granderson
He plays the outfield like G. Anderson
Should the Angels go get him
Or should they forget him
Like they should have done with Scott Sanderson

I'm not a fan of 2 many players non Halos
But I have always liked Granderson and for some reason…Soriano.
dont know
I for one, would like to see Rivera dealt. He puts up decent numbers, but mostly when there is no pressure. Example big lead by the Angels or opponents. Does not cover a lot of ground and is a huge liability into grounding into double plays.

btw
I hate the Aberu signing, I wish we would get younger, not older. I just do not lie it, a right fielder, who hits 15-18 HR a year, will be 37, and can not cover a lot of ground too. Plus, was awful in the NY series.

And I like his speed. But if we’re going to trade Rivera for anyone, it needs to be Matt Cain from SanFran.

Cain will never happen
Sure, the Giants could get Rivera from us in that trade and all he would have to do is show up to be the best hitter in their lineup. That would take the 2 out of the 1-2 punch that makes the Giants rotation the best in the NL West.
No way they are going to go from a team with a great rotation and no offense to a team with an average rotation and a below average offense.
