Aroldis Chapman has signed with Kendry Morales' agent Randy Hendricks.

Does this make signing Chapman anymore of a reality for the Angels?

He could contribute to the bullpen right now, if we do sign him.

but its a longshot.

They want power. We want respect...

IT would be nice to have him

It’s been the Angels style to “lock up” players for several years by throwing big money when they are Arbitration-eligible or long term rookies like Kendry Morales. As we have seen recently, the Angels don’t like getting into bidding wars. Signing Chapman will be a good move….he has no MLB experience, but talent like that doesn’t come around too often. They Angels need to jump on this.

This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

What is this 'talent" you speak of?
Signing Chapman will be a good move….he has no MLB experience, but talent like that doesn’t come around too often.

Is his talent that he can get the radar gun to triple digits? Otherwise, what is his particular talent? Most scouts I have read (like Klima here) have said he has, at best, two pitches, relies completely on his fastball, and lacks the consistent, pinpoint control a pure fastball hitter needs to have to get out professional hitters.

I don’t think he’s pitched in serious competition in quite some time, and when he last faced tough opposition he fell apart (emotionally and in his game).

We’ll see how serious his representation is, but up to now all the teams have been offered is a chance to watch him pitch a bullpen session, and not against live bats.

If that’s all they’re offering, then pass. He could be an interesting project, but his agents have been demanding he be compensated like a 6-year veteran, not like a 21 year old rookie. There are too many trapdoors to place a lot of eggs in his basket (the metaphor Cuisinart is back from the repair shop).

Nope

No more than Jered Weaver’s relationship with Scott Boras delivered Mark Teixeira to us.

Disagree.

Chapman most likely wont be an Angel, but there is some merit to thinking that the angels do have an inside track, since Morales and Chapman have a close relationship.

This has more to do with the relationship between morales and chapman, and no so much with their agent...

but its worth addressing.

What relationship?
there is some merit to thinking that the angels do have an inside track, since Morales and Chapman have a close relationship.

When Morales played his last game in Cuba, it was Fall of 2003 and Chapman was 15. Even Morales said he knows of Chapman but does not know him personally—their age difference meant they never played on the same team.

Face it: If Arte is going to pay $50M or more for a pitcher, he’s more likely to be offering that money to Lackey before an untested player who will need a few years in the minors before he’s ready to appear before big league hitting.

Thought they knew each other prior?

Eh..whatever. Defecting from a communist country must be a good ice breaker if they don’t know each other.

I suppose

he’ll have lots to talk about with

Alexi Ramirez of the White Sox
Yunieski Betancourt of the Royals
Yunel Escobar of the Braves
Danys Baez, wherever he lands
Livan Hernandez of the Nationals
Jose Canseco in Arkham Asylum

And others. Comradeship in MLB isn’t going to be that hard.

Besides, what many baseball fans don’t realize is that being the top pitcher in Cuban baseball is like being the top prospect on the Orem Owlz—the level of competition Chapman has faced is nowhere near MLB-level. A great prospect like Ramirez of the White Sox signed for $5M/4 yrs—tossing $50M at Chapman is not smart. That’s Dice K money, and at least Dice K faced stronger competition in Japan before he signed here—not that he’s been worth the money.

Morales’ deal was two-tiered, with one salary if he was in the minors and another if he was in Anaheim. He received a $3M signing bonus, with minor league salaries totaling $1.5M and major league salaries totaling $4.5M—over a 6 year deal. The Angels knew he was going to need refinement and provided the carrot for the player to develop and grow. That is a smart way to approach Chapman—treating him as if he’s Roger Clemens Jr isn’t.

Obviously we're not on the inside

But this change of agents hints of Chapman’s immaturity. Simply speculation, but his prior agent seemed to be busting his ass, helping him establish residency in Europe (on the island of Andorra says Joe Buck) and beginning the free agent process. Why the change? Why now?

The Hendricks brothers can get a deal done

His prior representation did do a lot of groundwork for Chapman, but they were seemingly out of their depth when it came to negotiation on his behalf.

That makes sense

But Chapman’s decision sure shocked the previous agent.

I think some of the old agent's demands shocked the GMs

We may see more sane bidding for Chapman than what the former agent was demanding as a starting point. It figures to be better for the kid, since a huge guaranteed contract only ratchets up the expectations of the fans for immediate results.

BTW, it is worth noting Chapman left his pregnant girlfriend behind in Cuba. Assuming he isn’t a heartless bastard, I can see a situation like that playing with the emotional makeup of a kid (he’s supposedly 21). Morales had to have many heart-to-heart talks with Preston Gomez because of the loneliness and alienation he felt with not being able to return home and visit friends and family; he might have left a girlfriend behind but no children that I know of. It has to be a difficult emotional adjustment.
