Aroldis Chapman & Kendry Morales now have the same agent
On mlbtraderumors.com is a report that Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman dumped API as his representation and is now represented by the Hendricks Brothers who Kendry Morales recently defected and jumped ship to as his new representation. What does this mean? Probably nothing but this is the kind of story that keeps us warm during the hot stove league. Did API (who doesn't have another baseball or maybe even athlete as a client) rub too many teams the wrong way with their demands?

Could bode well for us
Sharing the same nationality is an intangible among expats. I wouldn’t complain if we signed him.

The point isnt that they have the same agent...
the point is they are Paisanos- Kendry has talked about how lonely it was coming to America and how lost he felt for so long as he adjusted. The fact they are from same country and are now using the same agent hints that maybe they have been in communication.
If they are, and they are friends, it would give Chapman a huge amount of comfort to be around someone who understands his feelings. That could give the Angels a huge amount of leverage to sign him.

Yes, but...
If being around ex-pat Cubans is what it takes, then the Royals should be odds-on favorites, since they have two on their roster.
The agents will take a lot of factors into consideration, and money figures to be at the top of the list.

Exactly...
what I was talking about. You automatically feel connected with people who share your nationality when you’re overseas for an extended period. I’d imagine it’s even more intense when you’re basically a political fugitive in your home country and have to make a new life for yourself.
Most of us here in the US don’t realize this until you leave America for a little bit. And no, Mexico for Spring Break doesn’t count.

in other news
Weaver and Wood have the same dentist (for all I know)
This comes down to money, Morales received (at the time) a huge bonus to sign and his agent knows how to market his players. I’d love to see Chapman in red but it comes down to Arte making a very expensive gamble.
It isn't that I hate Boston, just that I hate Bostonians.
He'll get a big enough contract....
…that if he wants to be near Kendry he can buy the house next door and then commute to Yankee’s games via private jet…
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
There are occassions...
When money is not the sole deciding factor for a player to sign his name to a contract. Vlad for example. Half the reason he came here was to avoid the press environment in NY or Boston and I think because he liked Arte.
Either way, there are clearly some potential advantages for the Angels here and he won’t cost near as much as Lackey or Figgins, no matter how good scouts think he is.

If this wasn't a money move
Chapman wouldn’t have fired the people that helped him defect.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
Obviously...
Dude wants to get paid. Im sure thats what his show-off publicity exercising is about.
But no one is saying, “oh well the angels have morales, that locks it up, give the guy 2cents more than league minimum and call it good” We’re saying IF the angels are there in the bidding, these little things (people he can relate to, weather that doesnt get below freezing…) make the difference.

Right
Plus look at Strasburg and Darvish, the two other top-ranked non-MLB pitchers that he is put in the same class with. Darvish isn’t even talking to an MLB club and Strasburg signed for around 15 million.
Chapman won’t get over that amount if he even gets close. The scouting, record, and overall situation with Strasburg was all different and better than it is with Chapman. If the Angels or whoever else signed him for around 10+ million and sent him to AAA I wouldn’t call it a bad investment.
