Reading that gave me chills
He is forever frozen in my memory as a kind, intelligent and athletic 20-something. The thought of his being 59 never crossed my mind.
His father was a player in the Negro Leagues who had the misfortune of being just a little too old to make it into MLB; had he been maybe 5 years younger, he would most likely have had his chance. Integration in the game just moved too slowly in the early 50s, but by 1960 black players were far more commonplace.
Lyman Sr and his son were never close, however.
