Hudler and Physioc Dumped By Fox Sports West
la times reporting hud and phys were let go this morning...leaving us with....rory and gubi...
from the article:
According to a release from Fox Sports and sent, it says, on behalf of Fox Sports West and the Angels, Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc will no longer cover Angels games for the local sports network.
The statement read:
"We are going in a different direction next season and will use single announcing teams on TV and radio that will include Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza on Fox Sports West and KCOP and Terry Smith and Jose Mota calling the action on radio (KLAA AM 830). We believe this approach will create greater consistency on our telecasts, as well as a deeper familiarity with fans and viewers. We would like to thank Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc for their contributions through the years and we wish each of them well."

I’ll miss the Hud at times, but if losing him is the price of being liberated from Physioc, well, freedom ain’t free.
No doubt
I keep reading Mark Whicker’s blog hoping he rumors that Rex Hudler will be joining HalosHeaven.

Thats fucking gay!
why Hud?
maybe he can help Jeff Bigs on his show instead of the current no.2 guy.
They want power. We want respect...
Second in line to jeff biggs on an AM radio station that only 3 people listen to?

AM 830
830 needs to bring Hud on board. Lodge is horrifically bad and Biggs is alright but boring. Hud in the morning would be amazing, verbal coffe.

I think Hud in the morning might be awesome.
I wouldn’t mind Hudler having a show one day a week during the season, like he already kind of had.

WOW
I think they’ll regret having Jose do color in English (and they really better not have him do English play-by-play). Nothing wrong with his analysis/knowledge, but he’s just got a grating style. Better to deploy him as a roving reporter w/ good knowledge of the game & players.

Agreed
Mota in English on the radio? This might make listening to games on the radio unbearable.
by HungryHunter on Nov 24, 2009 1:11 PM PST up reply actions
I thought he was fine doing color on the radio.
He’s not as strong in the booth for broadcast, but he’s reasonable when he’s a sideman to Smith doing PBP. Sure, he builds up weird clauses at times, and his sentences sound like someone who’s doing a little linguistic preprocessing, but on substance his insights are generally sound.
I think it depends how much time one spends with bilinguals or second-language speakers. I work with multilinguals and non-native speakers all day long, and Mota - while I can clearly recognize some of his deficiencies — has never really bothered me. Agreed that he lacks the crispness and reactive ability to do PBP in English (though he’s much better in Spanish), but he can do color just fine.
I'm married to a furriner, so it ain't that
It’s really the PBP stuff more than anything, but you can also see the wheels spinning when he does color sometimes. It’s like watching Howie Kendrick when he’s thinking himself into a three-pitch strikeout.
I teach 7 year old Mexicans who speak better than he.
Or as Mota might say, I teach Mexicans who have 7 years who speak more better than him. Okay, maybe he’s not that bad, but I beg to differ, Turks. I am a reading teacher at a school that is 99% Hispanic (mostly Mexican and Mexican-American), and I still cannot abide listening to Jose Mota. Someone with such poor syntax should not be in broadcasting. I just don’t get it, how did he make it this far?
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.
by Rally Manatee on Nov 24, 2009 3:38 PM PST up reply actions
I'm not convinced he's as bad as all that.
His syntax is convoluted, yes, but his brain is often outrunning his tongue. He has a lot of ideas he’s trying to get out and sometimes needs a couple of overloaded sentences to spin them out. I have a high tolerance for rhetorical eccentricity if the ideas per square inch merit it.
The thing is, with Physioc, you may get perfect English, but a sum total of half an idea a night. With Mota you get about ten ideas in 30 seconds flat. So what if it’s origami English.
Field Reporter
Mota is actually one of the best at this, and I don’t mean it as a slight. He clearly is able to quickly develop a rapport with players, and I’m always impressed with his ability to do the interviews and translate as quickly as he does. It’s not an easy task. The biggest drawback to using him as a color guy is that he’s not always as succinct as the role requires.
And there was much rejoicing
Rory is a little sedate for my taste, Mark doesn’t have the greatest vocabulary (I swear I’ve heard him even referring to good fielding as “dominating”), and their synergy is questionable, but overall they call a better game than Heckle and Jeckle. I couldn’t even stand to watch their games with the sound on. I just wish they’d put Terry Smith in the TV booth, though. He’s the best they’ve got right now.
Completely agree with you about Terry Smith. Since I mostly listen to the radio, I’m actually glad I’ll get full games of him this year.
Saving countless runs with my defense.
by Sam Miller OCR on Nov 24, 2009 1:04 PM PST up reply actions
I get way too frustrated listening to Terry
It takes him 10 minutes to say something that should have only taken 10 seconds. And the whole time he never actually mentions what’s going on in the game.
And his post game shows are worse, but part of the blame should go to the callers.
I have nothing important to say.
I disagree. I think it's Smith that lacks the vocabulary for broadcast.
And the personality. He’s a dry toast yeoman. He does a fine, workmanlike job, but he has zero sparkle or charisma.
I also think it’s strange that you think Markus and Gubisza have no synergy. It seems it’s all my wife talks about when they’re on the air together — that they seem to really like each other and their playful criticism of each other is refreshing compared to the over-the-top artificiality of Hudler and Physioc (who she can’t stand).
Maybe it’s a gender thing, though I agree with her overall. No love lost here. I won’t miss Hudler or Physioc.
They do have an amusing man-love relationship with occasionally witty repartee, but by bad synergy I mean the frequent awkward silences in the booth. Sometimes entire minutes will go by with no sound except Rory checking in with a “the 2-2…fouled away,” while Mark is doing crosswords or whatever. Broadcasters should not be talking the whole time, but they shouldn’t be at a loss for words either.
Never noticed awkward silence.
Here, I agree with Turks. Rory and Gubi have great synergy. I swear they make me laugh out loud at least once a game. And they know how to keep a good joke going game to game. It makes us regulars feel like we’re in on the inside jokes. Good times. And I’ve never noticed awkward silence. Watch an old Vin Scully broadcast on MLB Network from 1965. There are your awkward silences.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

I’ve been saying all along I like Rory and Gubi together. They are knowledgeable and hilarious. Phys, you’re fired! I’m sad for Hud, though. I wish he could at least do the radio with Terry instead of Jose “Marble Mouth” Mota. That seals the deal, I will never listen to a radio broadcast again. Good thing I finally got cable.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.
Major Suckage...
I always look forward to tuning in and hearing things like “he’s got to go!” and “cheese & crackers!” or “call the cops!”
I know there’s a lot of Phys haters out there, but just remember how lucky you were to have a such a large broadcast team. Most teams had next to nothing compared to us.
I was lucky enough to have lunch with Phys a while back. He really is a cool dude and knows that he gets paid to be ridiculed. He knows it and still does his best to be a pro.
Sad day for me. :-(
God needed a starter. RIP #34
Totally Agreed
I will miss Phys & Hud’s charm and passion for my halos. It was nice having those two in the booth knowing that they cared just as much about the team as I do.
Still, I love what Rory brings to the table. He’s the best we have, in my view. He calls the game without a lot of the fluff, he knows his stuff, and he doesn’t try to hard. The bummer is that now we have to endure Gubi’s recycled (and very bland) commentary in his monotonous voice. Shame.

Just think of the kids who watch Angel games – I’m sure they loved Phys & Hud’s welcoming voices. Now kids will be bored to death with Rory and Terry running the show. God I hate that stuff.
Maybe it’s an age thing. I’m curious — how old are you? A lot of folks that love Hud in the threads seem to be in their teens or twenties.
To me, Hudler typifies catchphrase media — the Jim Rome syndrome where audiences expect to pull the string every night and hear “gotta be hackin!” or “that’s a frozen rope!”. It’s so repetitive and unspontaneous, my brain hurts like a baby seal under the club with the monotony of it.
and your idea of spontaneous and new is Gubi?
That guy is verbal chloroform. His “excitement” seems manufactured. I’m waaay beyond teens and twenties and I’ll take the excitement Hud brought to the table everyday and twice on Sundays (see? I’m old) over Gubi and Mota.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Not spontaneous and new, just solid, competent and authentic.
I’ve never found Gubi “manufactured”. Sometimes he’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but I don’t find him over-the-top. Nor does he constantly spin out the catchphrases.
You were critical of Hud repetitive and unspontaneous
which is exactly what I find in the dictionary next to Gubi’s name. His tongue in cheek comes across to me as disengenuous and any excitement he expresses seems fake and the insight is generally routine and obvious.
In my mind this is a downgrade to safe and bland and quite frankly, he bores me. Hud’s stupidisms were entertaining and his upbeat excitement was VERY genuine. Even the malaprop catch phrases amused me. I will certainly miss Hud
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

Hearn built a sports LEXICON.
Hudler just clowns with recycled phrases. He’s hardly inventing anything, and he couldn’t do PBP like Hearn to save his life.

Gubi over Hud? Really?
While I am far from a Phyzz guy, I’ve always found Hud pretty entertaining and to be a fan of the game. Hud has had his annoying moments, but altogether, its sad to see him go. But how anybody can think that Gubi is a step up is beyond me. And more Mota isn’t the answer either. But on the bright side, no more Phyzz.

We need Hud
Hud was as excited as we were and he made the game more exciting. Hud also connected with kids, Gubi is as boring as GA is lazy.
It isn't that I hate Boston, just that I hate Bostonians.
The AAA Guy
Last year during spring training, the AAA Bees’ announcer (I don’t know his name & I’m too lazy to investigate right now) handled a couple of the broadcasts. He was entertaining yet competent. He had some silly catch phrases which were amusing at least in small doses, (don’t know how they’d hold up over the course of a season or ten), but he also remembered to keep the listener apprised of critical info: who was at bat, on the mound, in the game (it can be hard to keep up with every lineup change in a ST game), the count, and what was happening on the field at that moment in time.
Maybe...
Hud said that if Phys goes, I go. Maybe not, but it seems like something he would do. I love Rex, and I hope he remains with the Angels in some fashion.

Didn't you hear?
They’re pairing the BSG with Roger Lodge in the mornings!
Yeah, apparently every time Lodge says “You can’t teach that!”. the BSG will smite him in the sconce with his bat.
What we've got can't be bought
Sorry if that seemed snarky
I didn’t mean it to be, but it looks like that now. “Smite on the sconce” is a Fields phrase, usually delivered with a golf club or pool cue in his hand. An archaic meaning of sconce is “head”, and as you know Fields loved to use archaic, obscure and flowery words as part of his schtick.
What we've got can't be bought
How much screening is there to do?
I don’t think they get many callers.
“Who do you want to talk trash about?” Might as well say, “Who wants to do my job so I don’t have to think”. Pure crap

That show has become largely pointless without Dave Smith
I didn’t like him on his own, but he had a superb knowledge of local sports history, especially of the Angels, and his dour nastiness was a great counterpoint to Lodge’s loud, manic sunniness. I enjoyed Smith’s constant needling and frequent takedowns of Lodge, because not being a morning person I was generally of the same mind.
Now, the show just serves as an irritant to wake me up in the morning, and I almost always turn it off immediately out of annoyance.

This is interesting news, but
seriously, how much do play-by-play and color guys impact the ratings? Would people stop or start watching based on who’s calling the game?
I’d like to see Dick Enberg back, but if he doesn’t return, it doesn’t mean I’d stop watching the games. Fox could put a hair-lipped, brain damaged gimp in the booth (no, the other one) and I’d still watch…but probably with the sound on mute.
Bring back Buddy Blattner and Don Wells!
The 2002 Angels won the World Series after Don Wells died (10/05/2002). If the 2009 Angels had won the World Series after Buddy Blattner died (09/04/2009) we would be having a serious discussion about making a human sacrifice of Dick Enberg!
WHAT?! NO MORE HUD?!
This is an outrage!!! Rex Hudler has been with the Angels almost since I was old enough to remember. Yeah, he’s not the brightest but his entertainment value is usually higher than Joe Mauer’s batting average.
I seriously considered hiring him to do Play-By-Play for my daily life at one point.

listening to Phizz was like nails on a chalkboard. I could not stand him and am very happy he is gone. I would sometimes not watch a game if Phyzz was on that night and would instead listen on the radio to Terry and Rory’s sweet voices. Those 2 are the best the halos have in the booth by far. I do wish they were keeping Rex though, I think him and Rory doing Tv while Terry and Gubi did radio would have been the best move for everyone involved…while Jose hung around for the post-game interviews with our mostly latin team.
The Wonder Dog was the color guy on last years MLB video game, which I thought was great. bumemd he won’t be around to laugh at anymore, the guy is a goof.
That just stinks for Hud.
Steve wants the east coast market anyway so I say go.
But Rex… Rex was fun he made it exciting. I would even watch him from my seat sometimes just because he was fun.
I’m thinking that Jose needs to go and take English speaking lessons because they tired this in 2008 and it was a failure then.
I’m going to miss Rex – not so much Steve though.

It was probably my vulgar recommendation of said post

We are the Los Angeles Angels of the late 2000s
Sad day
I’m glad Physioc is gone. But Hudler’s really grown in me. Watching/listening to Angels baseball won’t be the same with out Rex.
+1
I like Hudler too. He used to be really annoying. He’s not as much. As a whole, I think dumping them is a good move if for no other reason that I can’t stand phys calling baseball. That said it seemed like this would have been a good opportunity to bring in someone great to replace them and instead we’re looking at the Goob and Jose Mota.
well here's my FUCK for the season...
normally, I would never fucking say FUCK.
FUCK…
FUCK!

thats terrible
oh well, i’m sure mota’s whimsical one-liners and passionate color commentary will make up for….wait a minute…thats Hud. This was a HUGE mistake.

I used to think "Is this guy for real?"
..when I first heard Hudler talk. But as I realized that really WAS his enthusiasm for the Angels, baseball and life in general, he really grew on me. I’ve heard announcers for other teams who sounded like they were phoning in the game, but Rex would sound excited about even a dull game. His positive nature makes him a good president of the non-profit organization Team Up for Down Syndrome, and a good father for the child he has with that challenge.
Good luck to you, Rex, in all you do. Thanks for having been such a positive voice in the Angel world. I know I will miss you.
As Rex himself said “Be a fountain, not a drain”.
If you were old enough...
… to remember Rex as a player, you’d know he’s for real…
I always loved to hear him as an interview guest because of his enthusiasm for baseball and life in general…
Here’s hoping he finds a spot, maybe we’ll see him again when/if Jose falls on his face as a color guy…
I never had a problem with Physioc
I never understood the outright hostility seen here against him. I wouldn’t claim he was my favorite, but I watch games via MLB.TV throughout the season and, trust me when I say this, there are far worse “personalities” working games for other teams. Really—far worse.
Hudler was an acquired taste I never quite acquired, but I did love his enthusiasm for the game. From what I had read, he was also a tireless PR machine for the team specifically and baseball in general. I think this may be a crucial miscalculation by the Angels and Fox.
Jose Mota seems like a very nice guy, but he is Ambien in doses larger than 30 seconds. Gubicza, likewise, seems to be having a battle with the English language, and English is losing. Markus is fine.
I think the Angels will take a hit from the loss of Hudler, and a lesser one for the lose of Physioc (yes, it is true that there are folks out there who like him very much). The team will survive in the long run, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a short-term PR gaffe by the Angels and Fox.
"He's not a Rhodes Scholar to begin with''~Theo Epstein, talking about Papelbon
The PR hit will be firing Hud
Agree with you on that wholeheartedly. Nobody will remember Phyz in May.
The trouble with Phyz was a progressive one – he is innocuous in little doses but night after night he hurls you toward a breaking point.
Agreed - Use MLB.tv before you complain about Hud, Phyz
I’ve been using mlb.tv since the year it started. I’m one of the crowd that no longer lives in LA, OC, or Riverside County so it’s my only way to see the Angels outside of the occasional nationwide broadcast. Hell, even half of those I’m forced to watch NL games because I live in San Diego.
We had a good, comfortable thing going with Phyz and especially with Rex. They’ve been the voice of the Angels for most of my life. There are FAR worse announcing teams out there.
The Padres broadcast team is just God-awful, even when they have Tony Gwynn with them.
The Rangers, A’s, and Twins broadcasters are questionable to below-average at best. I’m sure there’s more out there, but that’s all I can think of for now.
Trust me, try watching the away feed on MLB.tv (or worse, being stuck with it because of technical difficulties) and you will love Phyz and the Wonderdog even more, or at least be satisfied with them.

I hope you're right eyespy, and Hud comes back, for the pregame/postgame shows.
However, I’ll take that bet, and what I want from Hawaii is some Maui Wowie!!!

gunna miss 'THE WONDERDOG'
he was a bit over the top at times but still, his insights as to what goes on in the locker room made me feel like i knew the team on a more personal note. the way he was able to bring stories about what a certain player joked about with him is not something rory or guby can bring to the table. and such memorable phrases like:
getting figgy with it
salmon goes uuuuup-stream
from his nose to his toes, thats how vlady goes, from east to west he is the best
among others..
& he loves his weed!!!!!!!!!!
what the hell
Loved Hud and his enthusiasm- Rory and Guby are boring- I’d have Hud and Phiz anyday over them

Am I the only one who completely disagrees with the people who say Mota is hard to understand?
I really don’t understand. I am an educated American and I can understand Mota absolutely fine. I know he doesn’t speak English as smooth as some people, but he had to pick up English when he came from the Dominican. In my mind, to be in a business where you need to speak a language that comes second to Mota is amazing. And I think he does it well. Mad props to the guy.
He is clearer than Gubizllksndfasa
The mumbler needs to go! Bring back the Hud.

It is not his enunciation of English that gets to me.
It is his extremely heavy accent on his enunciation of Spanish. Almost no consonants.
“flath-oh-mea-where-e-oh”. Oh. He is talking about “Vuh-lad-a-meer Grrrr-rare-oh”.
So I call him Joe’s Mow-da.
(And, yeah, I studied Spanish. I know about rolling r’s and soft g’s, etc.)
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
As long as Rory and Terry are around I'm good
Now just get Halladay
