Sterling's been awful for longer

Let Snyder do what he does for a couple more decades, then we’ll talk.

Al Davis

Worst owner in pro-sports. Al Davis is proof you can have all the trappings of The Good Life and still be miserable loser.

Fred Wilpon

Every year he splatters more money and free agents into uniforms and one way or another, the Mets still lose. I think he just jerks Mets fans chains every year. That team needs a new philosophy. like maybe a farm system and an attempt at team depth.

At least teams like the Pirates, Orioles, Reds, etc. know what they are getting. Poor Mets fans think they have a winning team every year. And every year, they have nobody to come up from the farm to help out. They have zero depth off the bench. They will never win like that.

And don’t even get started on Omar Minaya. Talk about a bad owner, bad GM combo!

Happy Birthday to the ground!

I would put Donald sterling in the top two.

He and Al Davis are neck and neck.

I've got nothing.

There was a great feature in espn the magazine a few months back on Mr. Sterling

Article he is such a jackass it baffles me. Al Davis is a close second to Sterling. Don actually makes a profit off the Clippers!

#34, never forget.

sterling-clippers
al davis-raiders
georgia-rams
disney- debacle w/the halos and ducks
bruce mcnall-kings (brought us gretzky but at the end of the day was a fraud)
the mccourts- this is going to end horribly
the moores- pulled the padres down with them in their personal problems
the spanos family- trying to turn the screws on the good people of san diego and threaten to bolt (pun intended) about every other year
the current broadcom exec. w/the ducks- reservation at the grey bar hotel party of one

And why, exactly, was Disney a "debacle" ownership for the Halos and Ducks?

I mean, apart from the fact that they created the Ducks in the first place, without which there would be no Ducks at all. Or bringing Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne – and Big League Hockey – to Orange County. Or taking Orange County to its first Stanley Cup Final. 7 games deep, no less. Yeah. All that totally sucked.

Or, maybe you mean the way that they took control of the Angels in 1996 and prevented the franchise from moving out of Southern California? Or worked with the city to tear down the eyesore of a stadium and restore the views and intimacy of a baseball park? Or re-created the entire foundation of the current baseball experience? Perhaps you resent the way that they brought in the likes of Bill Stoneman, Mike Scioscia, Tony Reagins and The Rally Monkey? Or oversaw the only Wolrd Series title in franchise history? Or sold the franchise to one Arte Moreno? Yeah, all that sucked as well.

Or maybe you suggest that we throw all that away because of cheerleaders, periwinkle, and cartoon logos. Go ahead if you want, but I won’t be joining you.

I wonder what John Lackey must think about how long Sosh left Juan Rivera in the playoff lineup?

Also Disney had an offer from the McCourts before Arte came along

and had the wisdom to tell them to take a hike

Now there's a hole in the sky
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too...

This Rally Monkey's gone to Halos Heaven

disney caught lighting in a bottle w/2002

when tony tavares was the president of disney sports enterprises he was a penny pinching corporate shill towing the company line. he at the instruction of disney almost chased percy away and traded ersty. the stoneman and scioscia hires were only because they were the cheapest hires to be found. we won in 2002 not because of disney but in spite of disney. one question, is the organization better off now or when disney owned it?

To add to these cogent points

Tavares/Disney was a train wreck and it was after Tavares resigned (because the team was going to be sold) and Disney Exec Paul Pressler decided the best way to sell it would be to win now.

Realize that had it not been Pressler, another exec might have decided to abandon ship and toss the team in a firesale to whomever had a hundred million that would get Bud Selig’s vote.

Disney’s investment in the stadium, which is of course an investment in their own neighborhood, caretaking a property until a stable owner can come along and keep teh neighborhood elevated.

So perhaps that list above should read “Tavares” instead of Disney, but the list of owners of the Angels can read like this:

Gene – Good
Jackie on behalf of Gene – Bad
Tavares on behalf of Eisner – Bad
Pressler on behalf of Eisner – Great
Arte – Great

You have some baloney history in there, thejd.

Bill Stoneman had Ersty traded to the White Sox. It was Eisner/Tavares that stepped in and shut that down and kept Erstad so that he was around for 2002.

As for “the stoneman and scioscia hires were only because they were the cheapest hires to be found”, state your sources for that. My recollection was that Sciscia was a strong candidate to take over the Dodger, but was stepped over. It was well known in SoCal that he was a strong managerial prospect. meanwhiel, Stoneman was a well respected front office guy for the Expos, which was running a well-recognized minor league and development organization below the big league club, something the Halos sorely needed to rebuild. He had proven himself a capable exec, working his way up to GM.

As for penny-pinching, you must have been born too late to recall the ways of Jackie Autry after she took control of the team. Thank the Lord that some local corporation with financial resources stepped in before she turned the team into the Kansas City Royals – West Coast Edition, which would most likely have resulted in the team shipping off to Arizona. And none of us would be on this blog today.

I wonder what John Lackey must think about how long Sosh left Juan Rivera in the playoff lineup?

fair enough, well said

i think disney never made a commitment to winning that arte and gene did. for disney the team was just a small sliver in their corporate pie and tavares was the henchman.

by thejd on Nov 3, 2009 8:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think Disney looked at the Angels as a crossmarketing opportunity. It’s really hard to look objectively at the Disney years and reach a conclusion on whether they were overall good or bad. I also think Disney realized their corporate interests were only hurting the baseball franchise and that was when they decided to find an owner who would honor the team and the City. In fact there was a quote at the time from one of their execs saying just that.

I have lived in Orange County my whole life and will neer understand the tendency of some who live here to attack and hate Disney.
